| Thailand!!?? any advise Posted: 11/12/2009 3:48:17 AM | | Thailand is such a tourist trap these days. A few people start talking about it, and then everyone wants to go. Go somewhere like Cambodia or Laos instead. | |

| Thailand!!?? any advise Posted: 11/17/2009 2:17:32 AM | I have been to Thailand, (Chaing Mai and Bangkok).
If you are doing it alone, the travel is easy. Trains / busses etc.
Bangkok is an interesting place, but I wouldn't spend more than a week there to be honest. Book accommodation as close to Khao San road as possible (tourist central). I stayed a few streets away and loved the fact I was 10 min walk away from good night life and markets.
Be wary. Bangkok is full of scam artists. Google it and be informed before you go. Anyone who approaches you and initiates conversation will generally try to scam / trick you (ESPECIALLY on Khao San road). Tuk tuk scams, etc etc etc.
If you are not a confident traveller, I suggest you join a tour (such as Geckos or Intrepid). They are not overly expensive, and you have an instant buch of friends, and a local tour guide.
Vietnam and Laos are also much nicer places to be honest. A bit more laid back.
Cheers,
Jason :) | |

| Thailand!!?? any advise Posted: 11/20/2009 10:30:02 AM | | I have to agree with people encouraging Laos and Vietnam and even Cambodia. Thailand is wonderful, but I agree with what others said about it being too touristy. I am sure volunteering in any culture other than our own will be an experience. Enjoy your travels where ever you go, and please share what you discovered. | |

| Thailand!!?? any advise Posted: 11/22/2009 9:44:43 AM | | I was in Thailand several years I liked Phi Phi and Krabi not much for Bangkok...My preferance was Malaysia, if you should get a chance go to a place called Prehentian on the north east side just off of Kota Baru....absolutely beautiful!!!! | |

| Thailand!!?? any advise Posted: 11/22/2009 6:17:19 PM | There is much variety in Thailand. I would have to agree having visited the country four times that it has progressively become more of a tourist trap. Still, the people were always genuinely friendly, the food was outstanding and the country has much variety.
The warning about Bangkok scam artists and the Tuk-Tuk mafia is legitimate. I would suggest you turn down drinks offered to you at both suit shops and gem stores if you were brought there by a tuk-tuk driver who speaks great english and is offering to drive you around town at rates well below standard fares. The local tuk-tuk drivers do not speak great english and charge more, but you will get where you want to with no hassles ;)
My favorite island was Kho Pan-Ngan. It has great variety to suit both the partying traveler, the person who loves busy/quiet beaches and the person who enjoys solitude in nature. I lived on the island for a few months.
Laos and Cambodia are also great destinations. | |
