| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 2:41:42 PM | A lot of profiles have this in them: "I work hard and like to play hard too."
I understand the working hard part, but I find myself wondering what exactly do you guys mean by the "Play hard" part?
Thanks | |

| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 2:43:13 PM | It sometimes means, "I am unoriginal, so I borrow catchy but irrelevant phrases from other people so I can appear cool." :-)
In some cases, however, it actually means playing hard -- such as extreme sports, for example. A guy who rides bulls and does backflips on motorcycles might be said to "play hard."

| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 2:43:43 PM | i've always thought it was code for 'i'm a drunk.'

|
| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 2:54:25 PM | They make the most of their time.
They play chess? They study it. They go skydiving? They do backflips and try to land on their feet. They go for walks? They keep a conversation going the entire, or chase rabbits, or look for the perfect cliffside view for some gazing.
It says "I'm good at more than just my job."

| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 2:55:34 PM | I think they get it from beer commercials. That's where most of us guys learn our hip patter. It's SUPPOSED to mean that they work hard (thereby hinting they get PAID hard), and still have lots of energy after work to put into showing off, posturing in front of women they don't know, MAYBE play some after school sports, and of course are ready for lots and lots of sex. On the commercials it means they drink lots of beer, so the other responder is probably right that it means they get drunk a lot. | |

| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 3:09:07 PM | OP
It generally means that they don't sit around the house in their pajamas and Three Stooges fluffy shoes watching Andy of Mayberry re-runs.
As to what it is that they "play hard" at, that can vary from just going out and getting "three sheets to the wind" to rock-climbing, stock car racing, hustling pool, etc.
It generally doesn't mean that they go out and shoot hoops with their daughter.
It generally doesn't mean that because, probably, their daughter would whoop their butt.
|
| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 3:25:57 PM | | It's a turn of phrase like « turn of phrase », how do you turn a phrase? It is just understood what is meant. | |
|
| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 3:44:35 PM | | in my case i work long hours and when i get the chance i will always make the most of it by doing my hobbies for hours | |
|
| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 3:45:33 PM | | Generally, it means that the guy likes sports and the outdoors, and that he generally stays active with hobbies and projects. This would be the sort of guy who rebuilds his car after work, builds an addition on his house on the weekend and plays on three different sports teams. On the other hand, it could be a meaningless cliche. It is best to ask the specific guy what he means by the phrase if you want to know for sure. | |
|
| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 3:50:02 PM | | It's a cliché, but it is intended to mean that they are fully engaged in life, that they have a lot going on. I.e., they are not the quiet evening at home type. So a date is likely to involve something active. | |
|
| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 3:56:37 PM | It means they drink Powerthirst....and run as fast as Kenyans....
Or this:
i've always thought it was code for 'i'm a drunk.'
|
| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 4:05:02 PM | I take it as party animal and...
I've always thought it was code for 'i'm a drunk.'
I guess some run marathons or play extreme sports, but have yet to meet them.

| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 4:08:37 PM | Let's run that one into the Guy Translation software.
Phrase: "I work hard and like to play hard too." whirrr, whirrr Translation: "I'm an alpha male and intense/serious about everything I do"
Meaning: Male code for an overachiever. (or someone posing as one)
Advice: With such a guy, best find out what he likes to play. Cus if it's Golf for example, you may not see him much.
|
| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 4:11:00 PM | | It's the male version of "dance like no-one is watching". | |
|
| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 4:14:11 PM | It means they are douche bags who are lonely, bored and horny and after 3 months of having they like taking long walks on the beach in their profile did not work for them and then after reading David DeAngelos how to meet girls, they are trying the work hard / play hard vibe...... or its the ol party till I puke kinda thing ..... either way they are still douche bags, lol

| Play hard? Posted: 11/4/2009 4:22:03 PM | | maybe it's a sly reference to that qualifying statement in the commercials: "If you experience an erection that lasts for more than four hours..." | |
