Chia Seeds
Posted: 11/4/2009 3:11:49 PM
Hey all,

Just finished reading Chris McDougall's Born to Run (which was awesome and I highly recommend!). One thing he talks a bit about was eating chia seeds. I do a fair amount of long runs and bike rides and would like to switch away from the sugary caffeinated stuff I've been using. Anybody have some first hand experience with this stuff? How does it taste? How's it best eaten (before during or after exercise)?

Best either ground up in a smoothie, or ground up and used in baking. If you make your own energy bars or snack bars, it's just easy to add them to the mix. However, like flax, they absorb water really well, so keep that in mind.

Taste is generally rather bland. I'm super picky, but don't really notice the taste of chia added to things.

There's also products made with "salba" that is chia, just under a different name- not sure if it's a trademark thing or not...
