| "Nidal Hasan" Shoots & Kills 12 US Soldiers
Posted: 11/5/2009 7:20:30 PM | A US army major has opened fire on fellow soldiers at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, with death toll now standing at 12, with 30 injured. Soldiers at Fort Hood are among those deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and some will have returned from there. The base has a centre that deals with combat stress, our correspondent adds.
Hilary Shine, of the Killeen Fire Department told the BBC's News Channel Fort Hood was like a small city. "It has schools, a hospital, a convenience store even. And it has a large daytime population - including civilians working on the base - with as many as 80,000 in this area during the daytime."
Local congressman John Carter, speaking to NBC News, said gunfire had erupted half an hour before a graduation ceremony was due to begin.

On hearing the shooters name , my reaction was "OH NO"
This is going to drive the right of America into over drive they'll be after do a Nuke strike on Iraq Iran Afghanistan etc !even thou is a "Homeland Terrorist"
 to me this shows that the war in Iraq and Afghanistan is "wrong" if & when attacks come they are going to come from "Home Made Terrorist"
*** Base commander Lt Gen Bob Cone has now said that the gunman was not killed, as earlier stated, but is in custody.
this is " good news " at least now he can be put on trial & we can know what happened & why ! | |

You mean you KNOW this guy and his motive for the killings already? Thats amazing seeing as the investigation has only just begun, maybe you should share this information with the a merican military.

Does anyone else see the connection between the Majors surname 'Hasan' and its arabic, probably Islamic origin?
He was due for duty in Afghanistan , maybe the yanks should have kept a closer eye on him as he may have had a conflict of beliefs/interests?
Its bad enough going overseas to fight the enemy but to attempt to take the enemy with you is beyond belief !!

Thats a very bold statement to make, much like saying every Irish person named O'donnell is an IRA supporter. Maybe he had personal problems? a history of depression? it could be many triggers I think we should wait to find out the reasons before assuming anything.
Catholics as with Islamics have proved this fact on our own soil and Imo should be vetted on their allegiance.
Arent we getting onto dangerous ground with this train of thought though? i.e. Guantanamo Bay @guilty till proven innocent? | |

Not at all , certain religions are known to have followers who are extremists and fanatics where their belief goes way beyond any rational reasoning or loyalty to their guest homes.
Catholics as with Islamics have proven this fact on our own soil and Imo should be vetted more closely on their allegiance especially where a conflict of faith is concerned.

Its not possible too generalise based on a name, for example not every Tina is slag, or everyone called Tarquin is posh.
It seems the media have jumped on the name and are using it to whip up headlines, and to further instill fear in the general public, without the facts being fully available. That is the major problem with news, the news now creates the news instead of reporting the news, I want to hear fact not heresay or conjecture. | |

Without getting too involved in politics do you not think his name is an asset especially at this time for the west in pushing to make middle east peace talks? Strategic move ? President or puppet?

No because 'exercising caution' or 'vetting' is not the same as condemning someone as guilty.
Many people who work with kids are vetted but they are not all accused of paedophilia because of the check !! | |

This chap is an Army psychiatrist apparently. He shot 42 people, with 12 fatalities.
According to reports he used 2 hand guns...pistols, the maximum number of rounds per gun could not exceed 20 shots per gun, and assuming some missed their intended targets, he must have had time to reload the pistols....and don't forget the he was shooting at soldiers, people trained to deal with such situations.
Further, it seems unreported in the media that he crossed a main highway to another base, through the main gates, both manned by armed guards, and continued his mayhem there.

Reports now coming out say that a number of the victims were shot by 'friendly fire' - typical of the American forces, they seem to always manage to do that. | |

I am in no means defending him but I think it is sad that just because he has an Islamic name and from what I have heard on the news, a practising Muslim, that his motivation was anything to do with fundementalism.
I may be totally wrong and he was simply 'home grown' terrorist. But as I have said its too soon to be thinking about his motivation, at least until some factual details come out. | |

Was this a terrorist attack by a man who sympathised with radical Islam, or was he just therapeutically letting off steam in traditional American fashion by using his right to bear arms as a means of self expression?
Well seeing as the guy is a graduate biochemist and a phsyciatrist, if this was an act of terrorism, it lacks a little imgination compared to what he was capable of, a very blunt attack by a sharp tool, thats only if though, theres talk of him fearing a trip to Afghanistan but he's in a world of crap either way now. | |

I'm not sure of the figures I'd need to check but I'm sure theyre are thousands of serving muslim british born men in our army doing a fantastic job, under your ruling they'd be kicked out?
I suggest you check your facts....
I never stated is as a fact? i said "I'm not sure of the figures I'd need to check" so theres really no need for that statement is there. I did check, 390. Also do not assume I'm anti soldiers because I wait for the facts before making a decision I was nearly banned earlier for being so eager to support our men and women i broke the rules (my good intentions were misguided), but i fully support the work you all do.

It happens all the time in the US, Columbine etc.
It's the problem with people having guns, I think there was an incident in Iraq this year when an ex-services bodyguard/mercinary got pissed and shot three or four of his buddies dead, and as a result may face the death penalty in Baghdad .
I don't think he was a muslim, I could be wrong, does that mean all white britons can't be trusted too?
I think this Hasan guy didn't want to go, and freaked out and shot a load of people.
I don't think we can gain much insight from his name or religion, The President's called Obama!
And I don't think that's the Irish O'Bama family!

As far as Im aware this case has not been before any court, until then his motives will not be known, or his reasoning at present all we have to go on is press reports, which are not necessarily accurate or true.
