| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/5/2009 7:40:03 PM | This topic is about grocery bags and the biotch that sells them. Before getting to the point let me explain my day - I think it will help all of this to fall in place.
This morning as I got into work there was no hot water in the entire west end of the building. I had to search for the problem and correct it, immediately. I didn't have my morning coffee and I missed the morning break. I was troubleshooting and doing the repair from 7:00am till 11:00am. It was almost lunchtime so I thought I would forego my break and wait 30 more minutes for lunch.
Within that thirty minutes another emergency call occurred. There was a steam line leaking, causing the area to be shut down till situation remedied. Me and a coworker responded and was on that job till 2:20pm. No breaks, no lunch, no relief.
Long story short, the day was long, tiresome, dirty and slightly dangerous. I didn't have my afternoon break either. I was hungry and grumpy from being hungry (I'm a food whore). Now, I had to rush from home, drive my one daughter to work and then pick up groceries to feed my other daughter who was at home sick (for two days, so far).
Now comes the bag lady experience!!!
I picked all my groceries and went to the check out. I had a full cart. As I unloaded the items onto the conveyor, I greeted the cashier with a "Hi" (trying to ignore my inner anger at the time).... she didn't respond to my greeting. I pushed my cart to the end of the conveyor as I waited for the cashier to check the items. After checking a few items she asked, "How many bags do you want?" Me "Pardon me?" Her, "How many bags do you want?" Me, "I don't know... quite a few by the looks of things." Her, "I need to know how many bags you want, sir." Me, "I'll have a better idea in a couple minutes." Her, "I need to know how many bags you need so I can add them to the total." Me, "Excuse me?" (she repeated herself) Me, "I haven't a clue! I'll tell you what... before you tally up all of the groceries, please tell me exactly how much money I will need to pay you. And then, I'll tell you exactly how many bags I need." Her, "I need to know the amount of bags you need because I entered it into the sytem already." Me, "Well. That wasn't very smart, was it?" I never understood why people need to give the amount of bags needed before they even begin bagging the items. It's always been a pet peeve of mine and given the events of the day, I wasn't about to let this go She gave me this biotchy look. I immediately thought of the old days whenever I gave that look to another person, my dad would backhand me. I thought, if my dad was here he would have biotch slapped her (provided we were in the 1960/70's) - hence the thread topic.
Things escalated.
I then continued, "Look! You are a professional cashier/bagger. You do this full time. If you can't tell me, as a professional, how much my items will cost; And if you can't tell me how many bags you think I would need to carry these items, then how the hell am I supposed to know?"
She looked a little shocked - to say the least. At this point I knew I had lost it. I knew there was no going back. So I continued on with my little rant/exhibition.
Me, "Give me one hundred bags.... and I mean it! When I'm done packing my stuff, I will count the bags I used - tell you the total amount of bags I used because, I guess I should have known from the start - STUPID ME!!!. Then, you can print me out a refund for the bags not used........I mean this! I am serious! And I won't take 'No' for an answer."
I then looked at the people in line behind me, stating, "All of this is because I am a criminal for using a plastic bag to carry my items that are mostly wrapped in plastic.... go figure!!!"
Many customers started laughing. I started laughing and then proceeded to bag my groceries because the store has no baggers. I openly apologised to the cashier and briefly stated, "I had a very, very bad day and haven't eaten since 6:30 this morning.
Biotch slapping the bag lady wasn't a very nice thought.... but I thought it was a funny sounding thread topic.
I don't know about others in this province, but I am getting tired of all this "Green" stuff when, in truth, those who are enforcing/imposing these environmental issues are grossing huge profits.
Where are the paper bags that used to be available in stores... for free? These are environmentally friendly bags yet, we have no right to demand them? Grrrrrrr!
|
| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/5/2009 7:48:55 PM | I'm thinking you should ask the TREE'S where the paper bags have gone .....
If you get some cloth bags and keep them in your car .... you won't have to "guess" how many bags you might need next time you go for groceries.
Peace .....the FairyHealer

How many cloth bags? *get my point?*
Grrrr! Recycled paper bags are environemntally friendly. Cloth bags get dirty and if spills/breaks ocurr, it can be a breeding ground for germs and bacteria.....unless you want to use electricity, water, natural gas to clean and dry them - which is environmentally unfriendly
|
| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/5/2009 8:21:35 PM | Honestly? This irritates me too. I hate having to guess the number of bags before I even start bagging. I am not a coupon cutter or a penny pincher... just charge me $1 or something and let me use what I need! I'm single, I've never used 20 bags and you know... they can keep the change. Just don't bug me with this...
I've tried to do the cloth bag thing and I'm no good at it. I get the cloth bags home and I forget to put them back in my car, so I end up buying more cloth bags... I have a gazillion of them.
Thanks for letting me rant too! I needed that.

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/5/2009 8:29:14 PM | Honestly the worst part of the whole "green" bag phenomena for me is its actually causing more garbage.
I live in an apartment, I reuse my grocery bags as garbage bags as a lot of people do. Research has been done that if all the people who reuse their grocery bags as garbage bags starting using cloth bags and buying garbage bags that they would end up using MORE plastic bags, not less!
I have become a master in the art of eye-ing out the number of bags I will need, but I remember one day at a store with packers I didnt buy quite enough, I needed one more then I had. The packer actually wanted me to BUY another bag. I looked at him and the cashier and said "I just bought 150 dollars worth of groceries and 6 of your bags and you want me to dig out a nickel or use my debit because I mis-calculated by ONE bag??". I had to laugh when the cashier supervisor came over after I told the packer to repack them better instead of making me pay extra to give me a bag.

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/5/2009 8:59:37 PM | I am voting with MY I on this one. I ask each and everytime they ask me how many bags I want - "where is the money going that Metro, Loblaws etc are charging for bags going to? Answer is always - "it's going to help the environment".
I say "show me where it is going to the environment, in other words, prove it" . The employees answer - they can't, they were simply told to say that.
Grocery prices have gone up drastically, even with the recession and gas prices dropping; there has been no drop in produce pricing. We continue to complain about gas prices, I think we also should start complaining about food pricing and the grocery stores who gouge their customers for 5 ยข a plastic bag to take their high priced food home in, rather than provide their clients with recycled paper bags.

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/5/2009 9:55:27 PM | Hey grumpy old dog !LOL Look if you are a normal person you should be able to judge how many bags you need . Too bad you didn't eat all day ! Still no reason to flip out at the check out at a food store just because you felt your special.LOL And lucky I wasn't the person at the till as I would have giving you 100 plastic bags and charged you for them and then refuse to refund you for the ones you didn't use !HAHAHA! Then you really would have been pissed off !LOL
Hey wally mart & G tiger don't charge for their bags so why do they charge at others stores?? Cause they will tell you it keeps thier prices lower !LOL Yeah right thats crap.

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/6/2009 3:17:39 AM | No idea why they don't pack your groceries first, then charge you for bags used. Last time I was shopping cashier left my groceries on the till and started ringing in the next customer. I had to ask her for bags. She threw them at me. They don't even pack your groceries now. It's not about being green, it's about more profit. Charging someone 30 cents for bags when they've spent over 100 dollars, ridiculous. I can spend 4 bucks on milk at the corner store and still get a bag. | |

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/6/2009 5:47:49 AM | K... I admit. I recycle. I blue box, I green box, I compost, I tie up the branches in no more than three foot segments with twine that is made from wood products only. I have a bunch of the 99 cent bags from various stores and I use only certain ones for meat products so that I'm minimizing the risk of contamination to foods.
I'm a terrible person in that I will encourage others to reuse their bags as well.
I need therapy to break these horrible habits... and I believe I'm passing them on to my children.
|
| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/6/2009 9:39:08 AM | Okay Okay ! I guess I should also ad I don't remember to take them stupid recycle bags when i go shopping ! And besides they also too will clog the land fill sites. And I don't mind paying a nickle for a plastic bag . What the heck can a nickle buy any ways ! And Plastic bags made now don't cause any more probblems then these new recycle enviromental ones! Oh one note on these green bags ! Recycling them is impossible as blue box won't take them ! So they will also end up in the garbage when your done with them. And they like the plastic ones both take same time to decompose in the land fill!LOL | |

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/6/2009 10:06:15 AM | The environmental movement is a multi-billion dollar industry that is just getting bigger. Back in the 90's when I worked in an industry that used plastic bags, the same uproar arose and everyone switched to paper until a study emerged that said that the recycled plastic was actually less harmful then the paper.
This bag tax is just another grab from the consumer. It will have zero environmental impact. Seems to me that the air was cleaner, the weather swings less severe, and these nifty new viruses were few and far between back when I was a kid and when this environmental "industry" did not exist. Food for thought.

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/6/2009 1:45:48 PM | I actually got some hard plastic crates for groceries...I like them better, as you said the cloth bags can spill...and even tho you can wash them...is not the same. THe crates I can rinse out...plus they hold more.
I used to shop at this one store every week that charged for bags. One week, can't remember what happened....but for some reason this cashier came over and started accusing me of STEALING a bag. OMG I could not believe it....and I never stole the damm bag.....I paid for more than I used to be honest.
Anyway I left the store and have never been back to that store...they lost a 100 plus week customer. I did call and give the manager a piece of my mind, but still I would never step foot inside that store. Was unreal.
|
| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/6/2009 5:09:35 PM | | HUGE MONEY GRAB AND NOTHING MORE! It angers me so much that they have the nerve to charge for bags! I only buy what I need for the day or weekend now and I use boxes from the store I shop in! I refuse to BUY a freakn' bag after giving them my business and hard earned cash! | |

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/6/2009 11:46:25 PM | It's a money grab, nothing more. If a grocery store wants to charge you for bags, don't shop there anymore. If you see the store manager on your way out, and if he speaks English, make sure he knows why you won't be back. If not, send a quick, polite email to the company, making it plain that you won't be back to their stores. The whole reason for the one time use plastic bags in the first place was hygiene. You want to be a "greenie"? Fine. Feel free to re-use your "botulism bags" as much as you want, just make sure to stock up on Immodium. Sooner or later, you're going to need it. Really, these extra fees and charges are getting out of control. Buy a new car, they charge you a tire tax which is supposed to help the environment. Ya, sure. When the tires wear out, you're charged again to get rid of the old ones... BUT.... those old tires? They're not going to a landfill. They're SOLD to recyclers. What a scam this is. You pay twice, up front and at the back end, they they're SELLING the stuff, so the retailers are getting paid three times for the same tire, and of course the government gets their cut, which is really what it's all about in the first place. | |

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/7/2009 7:47:39 AM | | Cloth bags ?? I hope you don't mean the bags that Loblaws sells ?? They aren't cloth they are PLASTIC ,as they are made of POLYester which we all know is plastic. Not only that they are made in CHINA ,,so lets get this straight ,,they replaced locally made plastic bags with colorful polyester ones made in china ,,they then charge you 99 cents for something they used to give you for free and how do these "Green bags" get here ?? on a boat burning diesel fuel. You now have to replace the free plastic bags they used to give you as you no longer have them for things like cleaning up after your dog ,,household garbage ,,cleaning out your car etc etc ,,so off to buy Glad bags which makes Loblaws more money. I have you noticed that they still wrap everything they sell in plastic ?? But yet they claim to be going green !!!! | |

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/7/2009 9:06:40 AM | There's only one thing that pisses me off more than buying bags & that is those self check out's....not only do I have to buy the bags but I have scan & bag my own,I don't recall getting a discount for doing someone elses effing work | |
|
| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/7/2009 6:24:54 PM | I have to agree with dodger re the self check machines. The line up for those is usually longer than the line ups for the cashiered checkouts.
I carry 4 reusable bags with me when shopping for groceries. I don't put vinegar, laundry soap, or any other item that has it's own handle in those bags.
My gripe with the reusable bags is that, if you don't specify beforehand that you don't want it done, the bagger (if available) has a tendency to pack them so full they are rather difficult to carry. Being a busser that is not a good thing!! So, I have learned to ask for a bag, and then rebag a few items once I leave the checkout.
And....some of these "baggers" need lessons on the proper way to bag. How many of us have arrived at home only to discover that our bread/buns have been squished to uselessness by eggs, bottles, whatever?!
|
| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/7/2009 6:36:20 PM | | I love self-check machines! I dont have to deal with the moron at the cash anymore! Plus the lines may look longer, but theres usually four machines and the line is maybe two people longer then a line for a single cashier. SO much faster! | |

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/8/2009 6:27:28 AM | Well said MY I!!!
I was at a dollar store yesterday that charged me for bags! What is this world coming to? I guess we have to carry bags everywhere we go, since it seems more and more places will be charging for bags.
It is a money grab, I agree!

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/8/2009 6:39:18 AM | | We are being nickeled and dimed to death! More people have to speak up and refuse to pay or stop go to the stores that are charging for the bags! Our incomes are not going up - but everything we have to pay for is - making life difficult and unenjoyable! | |
|
| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/8/2009 11:31:03 AM |
the bagger (if available) has a tendency to pack them so full they are rather difficult to carry On many ocassions I've watched people struggle when attempting to carry their bags out of the store and to their vehicle. Immediately, I thought these people are accidents waiting to happen. They are carrying awkward loads and when the ice and snow come I can only imagine how many slip&falls, strained backs, etc., we'll here about.
Those "green" plastic boxes (lieu of 'green bags') kinda puzzle me as well.... IT'S PLASTIC!!!!

| Biotch slap the bag lady!!! Posted: 11/8/2009 1:24:03 PM | Eventually there will be an uproar about the number of small yogurt containers (non-recyclable) there are in our landfills. Here in Guelph we have a 3 bag waste disposal system. Green for compostable; blue for recyclable; and clear for non-recyclable waste. These yogurt containers go into the clear bag. What's up with that?!
Back on topic. I did not know that the reusable bags are made of polyester. Thanks to the poster who pointed that out.
