| What did you dream of being as a child?

I wanted to start a light thread which was inspired by my daughters preschool graduation. All the kids were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up. You got the usual answers like, nurse, doctor, fireman, electrician etc. Then my daughter gets up there and says "A mom of 10 kids". My ex and I looked at each other and laughed. Wow, I was thinking. I am going to be a very busy and broke Grandmother. So my question to you all is this. As a child what did you dream of as a career and did you become what you always dream of? | |

Posted: 11/6/2009 9:18:45 AM | Like your daughter, my dream was to have 10 children. Interesting….my need was more than likely caused by an overprotective family.
My brother and I played endless battles of cowboys n Indians….lol…. in constant battles of wit also challenged by classic comic books my mother sent for amusement. I seemed to have the warrior spirit inspired by my grandfathers mythical stories.
When TV came to our house at the age of 6 – I wanted to be a glamorous movie star….living in New York…. Hehehe – that dream more than likely inspired the love for the song by Peter Sarstedt – Where do you to my lovely? (1969)
Eventually, listening to CBC from a young age, I thought it would be great to be a news anchor or a journalist travelling the world. I did work in radio at 19 – it didn’t pay what I thought I was worth and went on furthering my education.
No, I’ve had two wonderful sons….I love – my career is guided by the Warrior Spirit…lol

Posted: 11/6/2009 9:23:44 AM | I wanted to be a scientist doing important experiments and working with big computers. Then, years later, I did in fact become a physicist working on the big collider ring in Switzerland with supercomputers all around me.
Then I got bored with that so quit and left to travel the world, and never went back to science. On to the next challenge... :) | |

Posted: 11/6/2009 8:03:28 PM | What did I dream of being as a child? Alive. I nearly died of asthma (unconscious, tongue black, etc.). My mother poured some peppermint extract down my throat (only thing she could think to do), and it opened my airways enough to revive me.
Rather a brutal answer, I guess, but it was the truth. I just hoped to survive. | |

Posted: 11/6/2009 8:46:22 PM | When I was but a young lad I had the pleasure of watching the movie "The Old Man and the Sea" (the 1958 version starring Spencer Tracy). My father had already introduced me to sport fishing at an early age, so that movie left its mark on me. I dreamt of what a thrill it would be to single-handedly catch such a magnificent fish.
My dreams were further fuelled and inspired when a few years later the Hemmingway book of the same title that the movie was based on was assigned reading in school.
So here I am, some 50 years hence from my introduction to the story, and I'm still dreaming of catching a trophy fish, a "fishie" that I'd be proud to mount, over the fireplace mantle.

Posted: 11/6/2009 11:56:00 PM | I always wanted to be a veterinarian when I was younger. In a lot of ways I wish that I would have left B.C. to pursue that dream then, as it was not available in this province.
I did eventually end up doing something that I enjoy very much, and I still love and care for animals, but once in awhile I wonder where my life would have ended up if I had pursued that dream...not in a rueful way, just as a matter of curiosity. | |

moving to CDN, being responsible for myself/family, build a log cabin, wander the wilderness, horses, wild animals.....have a couple of nice kids...
all the unwanted stuff that happened in between just made the desire to succeed stronger...

Posted: 11/7/2009 7:34:06 AM | | I always thought it would be cool to live to see the year 2000,,,,of course,,,,as a fishy person. As it got closer,,,it didn't seem that all impossible. Then in the fall of 1998 I received a gentle reminder of how quickly things can change in ones life. After that, I'm just happy for today, thou "that" cabin of mine will continually be in the back of my mind, until it becomes a reality. | |

But - in the work I have now, I get to observe people and solve problems, so it's a nice compromise. Besides, rock & roll keyboardist for the Stones was never gonna happen... | |

-Being multilingual and translating-- check!
-Being a teacher --check!
-Being a dancer -- check!
-Being a health care provider --check!
There is another which is the total sum of the above + ... and the whole picture put together, which I am assembling at the moment!

Posted: 11/7/2009 9:15:37 PM | | nothing that i can remember until my junior high years. then it was a marine biologist until I realized I'd probably have to touch fish and stuff. Then a veterinarian until I thought about all the really injured and sick animals, not to mention the putting them down part. :( Then i wanted to get into astrophysics and astronomy after seeing this canadian astronaut at school, then i realized how much more math i'd have to do. | |

Posted: 11/11/2009 12:25:02 AM | Balled Eagle: I remember catching a big fish as a kid with my Grandparents. We were all drooling over it for supper... until it flipped off the hook and back into the sea. I am still waiting to catch my big fish too. I sure hope that he can cook!
I'm sure the fish that you catch will be bigger than the fish of mine that got away. I hope you get to eat it too! | |
