Has God always existed?
Posted: 11/6/2009 10:27:19 AM
If God is the beginning or Creator of all that exist then how could God ever have come into existence?

Some say that our Creator has always been in existence. Sorry but simply stating that "God has no beginning or end" doesn't negate any further reasonable thinking on the matter. In other words saying that "God has always been" sounds like a frail assumption created to disguise an explanation that falls short of being completely reasonable.

What do you think, has God always existed and if so how could this be possible?

Here's my perspective. Perhaps it's not possible to know the answer to this question because certain paradoxes exist when discussing God, for obvious reasons, even if they may not seem obvious to some. My assertion is that if one is going to make claims concerning God then one might want to be prepared for this obvious follow up question and have a better reply than "God has always been".

I had the answer to this question...and the one where the outer limits of space ends and how exactly that end is possible back in my college days.

The problem is...is that I was taking LSD at the time and forgot to write it down.

Sorry dude

Has God always existed?

Impossible to answer. But it's safe to say that something has always existed, which to me is just as mind jarring as your question. Bottom line, human reason is temporal and sequential, and is demonstrably limited with regards to transcendental questions. You'll never answer such a question with human reason. Consciousness is a different story, and you may find your answer there.

The problem with answering this question is the question itself. It asks humans to conceptualize way beyond their capacity. It is sort of like me trying to teach my dog algebra.................. The best you can do is to believe, if that fits your scheme of life.

First off, define "God."

All that exists.

If anything exists at all, we are then forced to conclude that it is God.

Who says there is no proof of God?...OK...OK...so God's proof is contingent on something existing, which makes God true by definition. For those who don't like my definition, I can only challenge them to prove that the God of their definition exists. If they can't, then why should I accept a God whose existence is highly questionable over one whose existence is obviously true?

hey mona

Is it correct to say then that your answering the question in the afirmative is based on your BELIEF that God exists?

Not until Human Beings created him. Actually it originally was multiple Gods. But over 5K yrs ago the Jewish faith was born and it was the first faith to believe in a single God.

As Jung said, "the question is the answer". To argue that even G-d came into existence, requires the assumption that all things must "come into existence", and not have always been. That assumes that all things are limited and time-bound, including the laws of the universe. But we don't really believe that all things are temporary, even the laws of the universe, or we could not trust that the laws of the universe might not vanish in the next second, and then we could not rely on them. Most things seem to "come into existence". But we have no proof that all things do, and we have no reason to suppose that all things do.

...no Paul, it is safe to say that YOU believe that I am answering the question in the affirmative based on my ~belief~ that God exists... I am saying without one speck of a speck of doubt that God Exists... one day Paul, even satan bows his knees before all of mankind to say that God was Just and Fair... God says that satan does not say it out of reverence but rather that in Gods Presence he can not help but utter The Truth....I freely invite Gods Presence and Spirit into my life and so in the Same Manner I can not help but to utter The Truth to you... blessings

If anything exists at all, we are then forced to conclude that it is God.

That's a pretty big leap to go from "I see a table" to "God must exist !"
No god "must" exist simply because you do. You can verify that you exist ... nobody has ever been able to verify that god or any number of them exists. If you can then by all means , show him/her/it/them to us who can't see , smell , taste , touch , or otherwise feel any "god".
It's not about defining any god as far as I'm concerned. The only gods I've ever heard of are sentient , supernaturally powerful , and/or omnipotent in some field at the very least. Can't say I've ever seen any evidence of any of these deities except for the stuff that people clearly made up all by themselves (which isn't evidence of any god at all)

Hey Mona

I guess I should have phrased the question in a simpler manner. Do you base your answer that God does exist because you BELIEVE he exists, as there really is no physical, scientific evidence to the afirmative? Or do you actually have proof that God exists?

If our consciousness survives our body, as many near death experiencers claim, or can exist outside our bodies as posited by those capable of astral projection, then consciousness must be eternal. If a so named "deep experience" near death experiencer such as Mellon Thomas Benedict (among others) describes having been in a state of having connected with "all knowledge" then we might assume such enhanced consciousness must be God. Many NDE'rs also say this world is "an illusion" and that our real home is over there, it all comes back to us after "death".
According to Theosophy, the Universe, as well as the guiding principle, Consciousness, unrolls and expands and then eventually retracts and gathers itself again over the course of trillions of years. It then goes into a state of "sleep" to eventually reawaken and do it all over again.

That is the eternal, ultimately unanswerable question, and the reason man created
religion.

Every computer program, is working to a background code that tells it what todo
Every living thing on this planet, is working to a background code that tells it what todo, we have gone as far down as the DNA, and we are now starting to get that all pieced together. But for every program code, there is a foundation level where everything is one in the same. It is only on that level that existence it's self has allowed us to perceive 'God' as a perception of our own image, but the reality is, God is reality... not a being.

Interesting angle on this line of reasoning Light Storm, yet my question simply needs to be rephrased since you chose to use a different word for God.

If "reality" is the beginning of all that exist then how could "reality" ever have come into existence?

Why do things need a beginning or ending?...Why do we think of time as a journey through space on a cartesian map from an origin to a destination?...why can't all of spacetime just BE?... Why can't time be a ring with no origin or ending?...Does it make us uncomfortable to think it?...Why should "reality" conform to our expectations of it?

If I try to define "God," the best that I can do is he/it is the Alpha and the Omega. But those are just words. Words are only useful to transmit ideas. To get a better understanding of this force we call God, and to find out if he/it is real, you must experience it for yourself. The language barrier breaks down when you experience the force, young skywalker, can't download your experience of it into common everyday language, sorry, no such luck. No words are quite capable of capturing the experience. Give it a whirl, nice effort, a noetic good try, but you're not going to get this thing wrestled into a box.

Paul, with all due respect, you have seen my beliefs and posts a hundred times... there is no way to state it clearer, I know from Living Truth, witness account and Gods Own Spirit that God Surely Exists, so does every person who is buckled into their seat aboard a plane that has just lost all of its engines.... blessings to be less stubborn

by your reasoning monalee1, a theist thrust into a non life threatening situation should stop believing in god immediately.

I don't know, Mona... I'm more likely to put my trust in the pilot of an airplane that's lost all engine power than I am to put my trust in whatever god you might. The pilot has a record of coming through in hairy situations...

the human mind will never be able to comprehend How God was always there,
the same as what is eternity (forever and ever)??

In the bible it tells us it is a waste of time to try and figure it out!

I think God exists. I've heard from those that have had NDE (Near Death Experiences) that there is something after here, some have even claimed to seen God.
But we need to look at what defines God.
He is all knowing.
He is all powerful.
He is always present.

Using these terms of God, it is easy to see that he can exist prior to existance itself, after all he is all powerful. Therefore, he can will time, matter, substance, space, and even his own appearance (form) to his whim. He could've willed himself to be that piece of heavy gravity that ignited the big bang.
He is all knowing, therefore he knows how to do these things. He even knows how to make Himself, to exist prior, or post existance.
He is always present. Circular logic. You can't be always present without being present always meaning before time, space, ad infinitum.

But I have to go with Stargazer on this one we need to define God, because the Greeks saw Gods in a different way. And for a modern perspective Daoist see "God" in a different manner then the Judeo-Christian view.
