| Offbeat England Posted: 11/6/2009 5:59:08 PM | | I'm planing London and Oxford over American Thanksgiving holiday. I'd like to find some offbeat things to do. Am also considering visiting Hadrian's Wall, but that's a LARGE item. What's a good city or town to choose to see the wall? | |

| Offbeat England Posted: 11/7/2009 2:29:08 AM | | ^^^Depends on what you mean by offbeat. I like to walk when I travel. I've been to London several times from 4-10 days on various occasions (going again in May). I have seen all the usual tourist sights (except those I have no interest in, like the wax museum, etc.), and have taken day trips. On one visit to London, I found this book in a bookshop and used it so I could see more of the non-typical spots. COUNTRY WALKS AROUND LONDON. Geoff Garvey & Leigh Hatts, Mainstream Publishing, Edinburgh and London. Try Amazon.com. Kew Gardens is nice also. | |

Try the "pup crawl", attend a football (i.e., soccer), Isle of Man's TT Races, etc.

| Offbeat England Posted: 11/18/2009 4:28:41 PM | Whats a pup crawl? If visiting, Newcastle upon Tyne's the place, has an airport, visit the Baltic modern art gallery, see the "wildlife" at the Bigg market on a saturday night. (www.newcastlestuff.com, and pubs,,,www.thebutchersdog.com)humorous, ironic!!and tongue in cheek guides!
Hadrians wall runs from Newcastle across to the west coast, where theres the "Lakes" a popular mountain region with,,,lakes.
North Northumberland, Warkworth castle, Bamborough Castle,,a,must see, Holy Island Lindisfarne and Castle, Berwick upon Tweed,
Then Scotland, go to the north west coast, see Skye, visit whisky distilleries, get eaten by "midgies"a small biting insect!!
I run Drystone walling courses(drystack) in the area www.drystone-walls.com get a lot of tourists doing the courses, from all over.
Get out of London asap, its full of foreigners and thieves.

| Offbeat England Posted: 11/21/2009 5:57:54 AM | Pub crawls are best but you need friend of two to do these :), (hopping from bar to bar if anyones confused)
Hadrians wall isint very impressive and the reason only to go is to see the highland scenery itself as the wall is only 3ft. I would surggest visiting Glasggow instead of Edinburough, theres more to see and do, and less likely to have mis haps :)
I would avoid london like the plague, i technically live in london and hate going there but unless you have someone with you and you like citys who can show you the thaters and some of shopping and such then it can be good
Instead of London i would go to Brighton instead, hell of alot better and you have the brighton beach and alot of other things to see and do, plus cheaper to get around on travel. Traverling around Sussex (not Essex) is also a good idea as there are distillerys and some other sights to see
