Best ISP?

My DSL just shot up and I'm irritated.
They sucked me in with a cheap intro rate but now they want quite a bit more,
and the charge on my card shocked me.

Anybody have an ISP that they love? What do you pay?

Is cable a better idea than DSL?
What about Comcast?

I'm in the Los Angeles area.

Any advice would be great.

Depends on who you were with and what you were paying versus the normal rate. Every single one of the sucker deals I've seen have the normal rate in fine print plainly in sight.
I pay about $40 a month for 7-megabit truly unlimited DSL through Qwest, plus am then also able to access any of the AT&T/Qwest wifi hotspots in the country.

Qwest hasn't always been the best, but they've gotten much better than they used to be.

I would much prefer a wireless broadband national coverage but not willing to pay $79-$99 a month for that, then be restricted in bandwidth per month and extra charges for excess use. If you have a cellphone company see if they provide coverage and for how much in addition to your cell charges. Use caution, some carriers may claim and advertise "unlimited" Internet usage, but again plainly state a 5 GB per month or similar limit, then charge more for overage...another $10 per gb or so.

cumcast philly is the single worst managed operation I've ever seen in a major company.

horrendous customer service, incredibly bad tech support (took me five guys and two weeks to get my internet hook up working. one of them didn't even have a screwdriver), and a totally confused and hard to reach billing dept.

good luck if you get them.

Oh yeah, comcast is dreadful in nearly all aspects of the customer service area. I recall the horrors of trying to set up a simple router configuration for multiple computers and their ineptitude on the issue. They couldn't figure out why it was constantly crashing or why the router worked for shit. It was like a little kid trying to manufacture a cold-fusion generator.

i pay extra for cruzio.com which is a local internet provider in santa cruz county, ca. maybe not the best technology, but with an eye on what is happening locally, storefronts within easy access if i need a live person, help from locals when something goes wrong and in english, so i can understand. for the more saavy person, everyone on my street disagrees. some have cable, some att providing their internet access. however, they say not to get cable telephone. several towns away, they say get cable telephone. i liked my magic jack but that just broke. so, i keep my att landline, so i can have dsl, but do not take advantage of the discount bundling. once i replace my magic jack, i will get rid of the landline long distance as it duplicates my cell phone. i use cable just for tv. i assume there are also other small, local isp's? we also had one back in new jersey.
