Is there any point in 'cause' chain e-mails?
Posted: 11/7/2009 5:39:48 AM
This is not about those annoying 'Friendship is etc etc ... if you forward this to 10 people in the next 5 minutes your dearest wish will come true' e-mails. They are irritating and pointless and I just delete them (which is maybe why my dearest wish is yet to come true, but there you go). I am asking about the chain e-mails attached to a cause. For instance, breast cancer: being female, I tend to get a lot of these. They contain mawkish verses, pictures of roses and ribbons etc., and the injuction to pass it on if I 'care' about breast cancer. Well, of course I care, and of course I contribute to charities, and of course I hope that nobody will get it and that those who have it will get better. But how is my forwarding an e-mail going to achieve that? I read a thread in one of the forums today about child abuse which contained the words "if you don't pass this on to everyone you know then you don't care about child abuse". My question is, am I missing something? If I forward an e-mail to a lot of other people (who ALSO don't batter children and wish that nobody else would), is there some way that this could in fact achieve anything?

One of the few pure pleasures in my life is the utter loathing that I have for chain letters of any kind. If an idea is worth passing on, then I don't need to be told to do it for fear of bad luck or for the hope of good luck. My friends have long ago learned that my response of a chain letter to me is not what they expected.

ALL CHAIN LETTERS MUST DIE! MUAH AH HA!

The Spamsters are playing on your guilt to send out the email to people that really don't care and don't need yet another email in their inbox telling them about some person in the world that had either fantatic/horrible luck in life.

Spam is spam is spam... pretty it up with a cause, and it's still just spam.

I get those too. Even if I don't pass the e-mail to 10 people I don't believe in or love Jesus. What a crock! It's annoying and a waste of my time.

I know my own true beliefs and wish people would not tell me otherwise if they don't get their way. They act like spoiled brats.

I agree with all three of you, but is there any actual way that actually passing this rubbish on actually does any good to anyone?

No. If you truly want to do good, volunteer for a charity and share the event information with your friends. Forwarding spam is forwarding garbage. A bit worse as it leaves a bad taste in the mouths of many recipients.

If I receive a joke or something that at the end says to forward to a bunch of people, I tend to remove the forwarding blurb before sharing it... I'm that opposed to the forwarding of spam.
