| Found a man made tool, artifact Posted: 11/7/2009 5:59:37 PM | It's chipped away (stone) to a point on one side, to hold it in your hand, it has been used for a long time. Heavy, stone sanded by time. A little large for my hand. Is it worth anything to a museum or collector? (Know that sounds crude...just ASKING) | |

Then if I were holding on to it, if it was worth anything I would put insurance on it. Just my 2 cents.

Item TO86
A fine grained gray basalt flaked double axe head having all the proper traces of use wear and excellent mineralization as a testimony to it's antiquity. Quite a scarce item, and the first one we've handled in more than 20 years.

| Found a man made tool, artifact Posted: 11/8/2009 9:11:14 AM | Hi there
I am currently working in ontario with an archaeology firm.
I'd suggest you put it back where you found it and contact a local company or the government. Tell them what you found and where.....if you are serious about it go back and take a look to see if there are more flakes in the area....but leave everything where you found it.
The tool is probably made out of Flint or Chert. In canada it is illegal to possess something like but I am not sure about the U.S
?Where did you find it(farmers field) It could be a significant site or could have been transported and left there for various reasons.
you could be selfish and try to sell it or you could make your small contribution to history...If it turns out there is an important lithic site your name will be mentioned in the report.
If u google 'lithic tools' or 'stone tools' you might be able to find an image of something similar.
It sounds like you found a scraping tool used on animal hides
Keep us updated I'm very interested...Great find!!

| Found a man made tool, artifact Posted: 11/8/2009 2:03:31 PM | Unfortunately, I found it a few years ago in theValley of Fire and wasn't thinking., Having read that I shoulda left it where I found it before posting last night - couldn't even remember the locale except it was there. Will call UNLV and see what they say- no real museums except Clark County and it focuses on the settlers in the dam/titanium site years. If I can will ask my ex to take a couple of pics to show you guys...may not be right away but will keep you updated.
thanks you guys | |

I'm sure you remember the general area you found it.. I think the true value is the adventure you could embark on, to find out what you have in your hand. You don't even have to leave the house..

| Found a man made tool, artifact Posted: 11/8/2009 4:56:12 PM | Lots of people pick up stone axe heads and arrow points in Canada. It may be "illegal", but the PC laws aren't enforced that much. Start robbing graves...different story. Try e-baying it and see what's offered? | |

| Found a man made tool, artifact Posted: 11/11/2009 5:41:00 PM | unless its in perfect condition or a VERY unique artifact you will get zero $$'s from trying to sell it.
There are millions of stone tools in very good condition that are worth nothing financially but are incredibly valuable in regards to the information it can offer us.
Withholding this from the public hurts us all.

Perhaps it is just a large secondary flake or even nature (a naturally fractured rock) into an ecofact. Surface collection is not aainst the law, like an arrow head. But still, it compromises the surface and what we can findout about archaeology sites and settlement and subsistence patterns.

| Found a man made tool, artifact Posted: 11/12/2009 9:29:56 AM | Unless you can prove the provenance, it has little archeological value. It's location and the circumstance of where it was found is far more important than another example of well understood stone working.
If you can get someone to buy it, more power to you. Personally, I'd keep it. But I'm strange that way-I have chunks of interesting (to me) minerals and fossils lying around my house.

| Found a man made tool, artifact Posted: 11/17/2009 2:46:47 PM | Does the stone have a flat shiny face? Are there any scratches on flat face such as "X" Does the stone look about the size of a Neaderthal ear Does it have buttons or anything like a charging point at bottom.
If so I think it may be a proto IPOD known as an ISTONE It was a communication invention way way ahead of its time manufactured in Silicon Valley. Unfortunately they had not invented suitable batteries at time and it was used to break open nuts
