Its funny that this day and age we're being told to cut down on electricity and we should all be doing out bit to be green and help the environment and soon as Oct comes round people fill their gardens and houses with all these needless flashing lights.

Jus,

I am so glad I'm not the only one whofeels this way about Christmas lights, I'm not saying don't have any, but how many and for how long, well some people just get ridiculous with it.

Quite often it seems to be the people who can afford it least who find the most need to try and brighten up their lives too. I look back to when I had less money, I used to waste it on trying to put a bit of sparkle in a difficult life too, so I'm not knocking it, I just think it's ironic.

I'm still far from rich, but I have more than I used to have, and I guess the security that allows me to feel is why I waste less money too. I even walk around shops where previously I would have felt sorry for myself, wishing I had the money, and finding myself wanting just about everything, and now I often don't want a thing. It's strange how the mind plays tricks on you like that.

As for Christmas, the kids are typically 'grown out' of the stuff they liked about it as kids, now they just see it as a profitable time and a time their Dad will be even more free with the alcohol. I'm tempted to not even bother trimming up this year, it's not the same if they wont appreciate it. There'll be plenty of cards brightening up the place anyway.

I think Christmas is what you make it. Don't allow yourself to feel pressure, plan your shopping to avoid the crowds where you can, and if you dont like the OTT-ness of it on the tv, do something else. Now the kids make their own Christmas and I dont need to play such a big part in making it special for them, I only have to 'do' Christmas to suit my own needs and it's a much smaller occasion for me, a few special days/nights over a fortnight rather than a month of it.

Do what you like with Christmas, and be happy to let others do the same, and it needn't get to you I think.

I dont bother with a tree, trimmings or christmas cards as dont celebrate it. My family get vouchers to spend in the sales as the money goes further. Only thing ive done is brewed 23 ltrs of strong bitter which will get me through all the crap, repeats and falseness of it all.

does make me wonder ... How can people celebrate it when they are atheists the rest of the year? And the christians, when they know its been nicked off the pagans? Lol

Badge,

I believe Pagans have celebrated Yule and the start of the longer nights bringing the better weather for literally ages. The idea of more daylight hours and heading closer to instead of further away from Summer sounds pretty good to me.

Plus its a time of year when we have extra days off, and most families and friends will put in that extra bit of effort to be there for each other. I know ideally we wouldn't need to be told a time to do this, but it does make it easier in terms of planning.

Then there's the New Year, also a time when we think about fresh starts and new leaves.

It's nothing to do with any kind of faith for me, and I don't pretend it is, but hey, if people want to party and be in high spirits, I'll join in no matter what time of year!

Not my favourite time of the year, either, OP. However, I have developed my own 'traditions' over the years and keep it as fuss free as possible and try to zone out all the hype.

Christmas is what you want it to be.

Personally I make it a time to spend extra time with my family, to be that little bit extra nice to people, to reflect on the life of Christ and to remind myself of how lucky I am.

To be honest.....

I never really notice it actually happening. We seem to spend so much time gearing up for it, when it does finally happen its a bit of a non-event

"Bang! That was Christmas that was"

Huh? So where are we now then?

"Boxing Day!"

Oh, ok

Its kinda nice, a bit like a Sunday Roast but you get to pull a Christmas cracker and wear the silly hat that falls out.

i agree with the pagan tradition sam, but dont fancy wondering around redditch fields rejoicing when theres frost around

but im the same for new year, as a few friends have just got sick of it. so instead we go out in the afternoon, drink loads and in bed for 11pm or watching jools. the problem i have with new year is all the hand shaking thats so pathetic as they end up fighting half hour later and bytching the next day.

to me new year and xmas are just normal days which are done to death by the marketing crew.

I was feeling the same way - but am slowly getting there now - next weekend we are off to the farm to buy our Christmas tree so I will really be in the spirit of things hopefully after that..........I have 2 weeks off over the holiday period so will be catching up with family and friends I've not seen for ages - hopefully their festive spirit will be contagious :)

I was rather wishing it wouldnt arrive let alone be over! However, I have managed to get the tree up this afternoon and finelly decided on somthing to buy my youngest son which I think he will love and be surprised mum thought of it. So I'm feeling a bit more festive too.
Plus I have guests for xmas dinner which always encourages me to make a little more effort
So bring it on!

Finally a cheerful post!
I happen to love this time of year as well, spending time with family, sprucing up the house and getting into the Christmas spirit.

The only thing I don't like is all the whingers - if you don't like it, fine, if you think it's a marketing dream, fine. But please stop bleating on about it! Post #2 has it stop on, the same reasons are given every year by the Christmas whingers.

not everyone is lucky enough to have friends, family to celebrate this time of year....so I can understand those who find this time of year less than festive...and if they feel the need to "bleat on about it" then why shouldn't they?

Money is tight for a lot of people - pressure is put on parents to buy more and more expensive items for their kids........it's not all a Victorian Picture Postcard ...

This is the first year ever in my life that I've really not been into it myself...that's more down to pressure of work, not having time to actually enjoy the preparations, and having grown up kids with lives of their own so it's not the same any more. Mind you I've just booked a trip on a local steam train to see Santa with my Grandson next weekend...so bring it on

Ho Ho Ho!

The moans on this thread weren't about being lonely at Christmas though- that's a different topic altogether. This thread has mostly been people whinging about having to buy expensive presents (you don't), how commercial Christmas it (it doesn't have to be), the pressure of having a good Christmas (so say no to the kids for once, they'll survive)- basically money.
Yes money is tight for a lot of people but that shouldn't be what Christmas is about?

I do like Christmas, but not when I hear Christmas songs and see Christmas stuff and have it thrown in my face as early as October!!

I'm not doing much for Christmas this year, but next year I'll have a baby so I'm sure it'll be different. It'll be more for him or her, even though they won't have the foggiest what's going on.

New Year on the other hand....I look forward to that. No one makes a huge deal about that really do they? lol!

Well I happen to agree with the O/P, sadly, I can't get into it either.

This Christmas is going to be worse then any other bar one for me, because all it reminds me of is Christmas Day last year when I had that terrible break up

Once I get into the New Year I'll be so happy...

Funnily enough, as one poster has already stated, for a number of years I've been welcoming the shortest day and do enjoy the days getting longer....

I've never been bothered about New Year's Eve at all........seems daft to me that people think they can wake up the next morning and everything will be different....same shit...just a different day lol

Won't be ripped off and pay to go in a pub that's free to enter all year round, or pay through the nose for cabs....rather be at home with Jool's Holland's Hootin' Annie and watch the celebrations from around the world on TV

I do not think people had lots of money to spend on presents in Victorian times ..well not the working classes .In fact i can recall my grand mother saying all she got was an orange and a few nuts ...in fact a lots of people with big familys could barely afford to buy anything but a bit of fruit and nuts , but did they moan about things being dear and not liking xmas no they got what they could afford ,you do not have to buy expensive things to have an happy xmas ...if people want to be miserable they will not be looking forward to xmas but for those of us who like well merry xmas to one and all
