Snoring... how do you deal with it??

The guy I'm seeing has a BAD snoring problem. I have a sleep disorder where I have a really hard time falling asleep, then when I do I'm a very light sleeper and usually wake up every hour to change positions, and go back to sleep. If I spend the night, I don't get ANY sleep!!

We're talking baaaaaad snoring. I can hear him down the hall when I give him a dirty look at 4am, grab a pillow and crash on the couch. It's loud. And constant. It's not every so often, it's all night every night.

I worry about him too because it's sleep apnea, where he'll stop breathing for up to a few minutes!! then wake up gasping for breath. Poor guy. His doc said surgery won't help it?

He snores on his side and on his back, I've tried moving him and it doesn't work.

So besides ear plugs and sleeping pills, or separate rooms lol... what do you suggest?

Is also often caused by a Nutritional Disorder.

A Homeopath/NaturePath has all sorts of remedies that will likely at least lessen the condition.

Vitamin "E" (Alpha Tocopherol) of approx. 600 - 1,000 IU per day helps as well.

Health Food Stores often have enzymic Tablets for that, or go to 'putanendtosnoring' for all sorts of remedies.

reccomending someone takes any form of treatment wether it is herbal or not is a very dangerous thing to do without full and proper investigation into what is causing the problem.

A pillow over their face sometimes does the trick. But you have to be careful not to apply too much pressure. I've lost some good girl friends that way.

There is absolutely no Danger using Health Foods or Vitamins or going with the Actions based on the advices of a Naturepath - none whatsoever - incl. taking Vitamin "E"

The vast majority of snoring can be remedied and it is important to find out whether the snoring is a sign of a more serious condition.

When the tissues of the soft palate, throat, uvula, tonsils or adenoids vibrate as air is coming into the lungs, the vibrations cause the fluttering noises of snoring. The tissues vibrate because of airways obstructed by too much fatty tissue or lax muscles. The lax muscles and excess fatty tissue can result from nasal deformities, enlarged adenoids or tonsils, heartburn, allergies and asthma.

Snoring can also be affected by behavioral factors such as obesity which causes excess fatty tissue near the airways, alcohol or medications (sleeping pills or antihistamines) which relax the muscles of the airways, lack of fitness, sleeping on one's back and overly soft pillows.

Most snoring is a significant issue in that it disrupts sleep and can lead to daytime tiredness and irritability, both for the person snoring and his/her sleeping partner. Problem snoring can point to a serious medical condition called sleep apnea. Snoring that isn't related to sleep apnea can sometimes be remedied through behavioral changes. Losing weight, changing your sleeping position and eliminating alcohol and smoking can alleviate snoring. Antihistamines or nasal decongestants might help snoring caused by allergies. Laser surgery is now being used to treat some snorers. Nasal deformities often require surgery for correction.

In addition to behavioral changes and surgical treatments for snoring, there are several products made to help reduce snoring, like nasal strips and sprays. All products should be approached with caution, as most of them have not been proven to have a significant effect on snoring. Dental appliances or plates which bring the lower jaw forward during sleep are also sometimes recommended. In certain cases, they are effective because, in bringing the lower jaw forward, they bring the tongue forward and open up the air passage of the throat. Other folk remedies include sewing a tennis ball or sewing spool into the back of your pajamas so that you are forced to sleep on your side. If the snoring is moderate, and is caused by sleeping on your back, these tricks may work.

When signs of sleep apnea accompany snoring, it is important to consult your doctor. Signs of sleep apnea include frequent waking episodes at night, disrupted breathing or gasping or choking for air in your sleep. Sleep apnea consists of several periods of disrupted breathing during which the sleeper does not get enough oxygen and seems to gag or choke briefly. Sleep apnea forces the sleeper to awaken several times throughout the night in order to breathe, often with no memory of these awakenings. The frequency of waking episodes varies, but can be between 10 and 60 per night. Severe cases of sleep apnea may cause the sleeper to experience more than 100 waking episodes during a night. Sleep apnea is typically reported by one's bed partner, and is accompanied by loud snoring. Obstructive sleep apnea, the most common type of sleep apnea, is due to an obstruction in the airway.

PS, I work part time in a sleep clinic. He should most likely be checked out to rule out serious conditions.

I'm sure he knows. I have found that a cause of this can be nasal cavity congestion or cartilage build up. I personally deal with this myself, having my nose broke numerous times, not in this extreme manor, but I do snore occasionally and I have found that breathing strips that you put on your nose help. It's not a complete solution but it does help.

I know something that works temporarily. I read it somewhere but I can't remember why it works, but I know it works becuase I had to do it all the time. Next time you're partner is snoring, plug his nose. He'll breath primarily through his mouth and that usually last for about 10 minutes before they go back to snoring. Hopefully, it's enough time to fall asleep too.

BTW: we have the same sleep disorder. I have to take 2 Zopiclones most nights to fall asleep.

That works too.

Tell him to sleep in a different room. I've snored so bad that I've almost cleared out 10 bunk bays and sent BEEN THERE DONE THAT 60's Hippy running for cover ! It did not bother my buddy or me, but then my buddy was used to shooting people with a .50 cal machine gun from helicopters. I'm glad he did not shoot me! However you resolve your snoring issue--don't shoot him LOL ! How about decongestants, remove mucous forming foods from diet, and nasal sports band aid ?

my dad snores like a bloody jumbo 747 is landing in the house.

my dad had terrible sleep apnea where he would wake up gasping and you could hear almsot like a choking sound.

My parents when i moved out got separate rooms about 10 yrs ago.

I think my dad went to a sleep centre...also i noticed once my dad lost 40 pounds the snoring was lower.

But he had strips...spray...a mouth gaurd thingie....and he also had his fan going all night long.I think the cold air kept his throat moist and the air temperature low so his nasal passages were clearer.

Try keeping the room colder...my bf snores very very little but i elbow him when he does..i relented and allow him to keep the window open and he hasnt snored since. If hes sick he wil lsnore for 15 min or so..

but my dad holy crap..it has lessened but when i was younger..you wanted to tie a pillow around his face..

I AM NOT THAT LOUD!!!!

Okay...so it isn't me...we all have dreams. No, I honestly don't know what to do with that as I've never encountered it. If nudging him doesn't work then he should see a specialist I guess. Because even if you nudge him all night you still have to keep waking up to do it and still wouldn't get sleep.

Go home after sex? Insert a soundproof barrier on the bed? Uh...yeah...I'm out of good ideas, anything else would just sound wierd. lmao
