How far do you travel to your gym - or how long?Page 1 of 2    (1, 2)
I must admit I didn't go to the gym today because it is snowing and I didn't want to get caught up in rush hour traffic. It would have taken me a good 30-35 minutes. When I tell people which gym I go to they say "you travel all that way for a gym" ... what they don't get is that its the only gym that I enjoy working out in. I tried the others and I don't like them. Sure, I can go to a gym 5 minutes away but I wouldn't appreciate my workouts and I'm not sure they have security in the parking lot.

How much time are you willing to commute to your gym?

Mine is about 10 minutes away...sometimes I will drive to one closer to my friends to workout together or to run errands in that area, but that's still only 15 minutes away.

About half an hour, but it's kind of on my way home from work and is the closest gym to where I live. When I attend classes in the city (at least twice a week) it's more like an hour. Yes, it's an expensive habit. But at least it's good for me!

Mines about a 10 minute drive away. Open from 4am - 11pm (long as you want as long as you are inside by 11pm)

everyone gets a key card to let themselves in. I like going at 4am. I'm the only one there, and can set up for circuit training. Then I go home, get ready for work and start my day.

I live downtown Toronto so there are TONS of gym within walking distance (and there is a small one in the basement of the building I live in) but the one I like best is 10 minutes walk from work, 20 minutes walk from home. It's a Goodlife gym. Well run, good staff and excellent instructors.

Mine is 2 miles away. When there isn't a foot of snow on the ground, I walk to it. I guess it doesn't make sense to me to ride the bus to the gym THEN walk on the treadmill for a couple miles.

Kind of reminds me of those people who drive to the gym and park in the closest spot... then go run on the treadmill.

I travel about 15 minutes from home (there are several closer). But it is right on my way home from work, kinda perfect since it is about the exit where traffic starts to pile up. It is a 24 hour cardkey access gym so it is only about me getting there. It is always open to me.

My gym is 35 minutes away on *good* roads. Consequently, I bought dumbells, a bench and stretch rope for home and just use the gym for machines. I find that it's harder to maintain self-discipline at home.

5 minute drive or 15 minute walk... one of my top priorities for picking a residence if having a facility close by.

For me, I find it easier to have two memberships: one at a local 24-hour gym (which is about 20 mins away) and the Y (YMCA). Since we have several Y's here, I can just go when I'm finished with my last client of the day.

The 24-hour gym serves as a good backup plan if work lasts longer than 8 or 9pm.

The hardest thing for me is making it to any gym when it's 16 degrees outside. This Florida Boy is not used to it haha.

^^ I was thinking the same thing. I may just join two because when I get home late I do not want to travel to workout.

I live in sunny South Florida, and usually travel 10 miles (on bicycle) to get there, which translates to about 50 minutes. It's quite a haul but a great cardio warmup. In this unusually long cold front we've been having, though, I haven't been out on the bike or to the gym AT ALL. Haven't felt like it (shivering). In my car, the gym is about 10-15 minutes away, depending on traffic.

Need to drive over there and work out...getting flabby..

I second that. It really works well if you have an uncertain schedule, and you're almost always guaranteed to make your workout days.

I have seen a study done on this by a major gym franchise chain. The average person will not drive more than eight miles one way citing distance as the deceiding factor.

It takes me 5-10 min. to get to my gym depending on traffic. I usually spend a couple of hours there, if that's what you're asking.

5 minutes

The funny thing is I have access to a free gym on the Air Force base I work, but it's to far away. I have to pay for the gym but at $30 a month, it's cheaper than driving 30 miles to the base at 11 miles per gallon.

Personally I have a home gym.Never have to worry about the weather and I can workout anytime of day.Works really well. The money spent on home gym is set off by the time saved and gas money saved versus a membership. :)

It takes me 10 minutes to drive there, and 15 minutes to find parking, if I'm lucky, lol. It's the new years, and fatties drive bigger cars and take up more space. Of course there is always that 300lb chick in the VW New Beetle "It makes me look cute"

Ummm... YOU AND the "fatties" both drove cars.

... seems you are in the same boat as them.

You wanna make yourself seem better than them? Get out and walk! Otherwise... stop accusing the "fatties" of taking up the same amount of room as you do!

Seems since the new years the amount of cars have tripled. And I don't drive an SUV that takes up compact space. Why should I walk to the gym? That's for fat people!

Can't we all just get a long!
