| | Gifts paid for with Goldfish creditsPage 1 of 2 (1, 2) | New feature for January 2010 "Send a Gift Now"
I have a discovered a new feature. When I view an incoming a message I now see next to "Quick Reply" button another button, "Send a Gift Now".
The choices of gifts are different than the gifts available when you click the "Reply" link (not the "Quick Reply" button")
Those gifts are not purchased with our regular gift points which we accumulate by logging in, but with "Goldfish credits" which we buy with real money.
PoF Credits: 100 credits for $10.45 USD Includes GST 215 credits for $19.90 USD Includes GST 500 credits for $39.85 USD Includes GST
Teddybear Voodoo Mr. Bun Lipstick Lovebirds Panties Perfume Bra Cherry Pie Guitar Heart High-Heel Popsicle Red Wine Martini Strawberry .
If someone has received such gifts this information is shown on their profile. Look at admin's profile for an example of this.
I can see how some people will be displeased with this aspect, just like folks did not like the now-discontinued feature of making public the number of people that have added a user to their favorites list.

| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/8/2010 9:35:51 PM | | So is this to generate some revenue for the website? I have recd some of the gifts that you have described...I didn't realize they were being "paid" for. So what you're saying is...if I re'cd. one of these....when you click on my profile....you can see that I rec'd it? | |
|
| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/8/2010 9:53:33 PM | I agree making it public will cause problems, especially when people begin receiving the naughtier gifts. I can imagine some people being embarrassed to have them on view. I can also imagine some people find some gifts offensive or incongruous with their morals and be quite angry having them displayed...gives off the wrong message. | |

There are no such gifts showing on your profile.
By any chance are you thinking of the other type of gifts, one of which you might have received? They cost no real money, but the sender will spend some "points" to send them. Those gifts include a bouquet of roses, teddy bears, glass of wine, box of chocolates, red purse, balloons, clover leaf, dog, ice cream cone, glass of beer, happy face and a steak. If you have received any of those gifts that fact is not advertised on your profile.

| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/8/2010 11:03:10 PM | ok...i actually logged in to check this out.
my crystal ball predicts this feature is slated for epic fail.
at least we americans don't have the added insult of paying tax on these virtual gifts.
100 credits for $9.95 USD 215 credits for $18.95 USD 500 credits for $37.95 USD You will be billed the lump sum stated above just once. To purchase more credit you would need to come to this page again. The credit purchase is non-refundable
Teddybear Voodoo Mr. Bun ^^^^^^^^^^^40 goldfish Lipstick Lovebirds Panties Perfume Bra ^^^^^^^^^^^30 goldfish Cherry Pie Guitar Heart High-Heel Popsicle Red Wine Martini Strawberry ^^^^^^^^^^^20 goldfish
these gifts will remain on the recipient's profile for 3 weeks (presumably, from date each (assuming multiples ) was sent.
apparently, bigfish is the only one who can receive cake, steak, and turtles. (at least, for now... oh, wait...see crystal ball comment, above. )
lastly, i note a (continued) decided sexist bent to these gifts...targeting you men. if i were a man, i'd be offended - because i'm not dumb enough to believe any woman would think much of anything positive upon receiving one of these gifts. why? 1. even the expensive ones are only the cost of a hallmark card or a latte. nice gesture, but... 2. the recipient has no control over what appears on their profile. umm...yeah, thanks for the panties. (not!!)

my crystal ball predicts this feature is slated for epic fail. The virtual gift feature is doing fine on LiveJournal. It seems retarded to me, but so does having "Taurus" on my profile, the "like" feature on facebook and 99.999% of twitter.
How many of them do you really have to sell each year to make the feature worth it?

| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/9/2010 12:03:18 AM | OH! I just figured out who will use these gifts a LOT! It bypasses the mail restrictions.
Maybe if I actually tried to buy or send it would be different, but if I click on send solar a message, it tells me I can't because of obvious restrictions. If I click send a gift it lets me go to the page and include a message.
But, I don't have any goldfish points, so maybe that isn't entirely true if I actually tried to send a paid gift.

Based on the number of people I see complaining they have been bocked by a filter.
Considering the cost of setting it up, it would not take long for that idea to start paying back dividends.
Making money is all about finding a group of people with a want and or desire and then charging them for the privilege. Once again Big Fish shows us how it is done, kudos to him.

| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/9/2010 7:14:58 AM | My only complaint is I do not see a way to remove the gifts if you do not want them on your profile. Or perhaps just a tweaking of the prizes you can send???
The panties and bra were sorta tacky.

| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/9/2010 8:53:20 AM | | You can send steak and so on, there are 3 pages of gifts - and a next page link at the bottom of the page... Some of the others are more appropriate for men to receive. | |
|
| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/9/2010 9:06:31 AM | Thanks for pointing out the two additional pages of gifts.
Some of the others are more appropriate for men to receive.
In comparison to the panties, bra and high heels appropriate for women to send there are not many similarly flirty gifts for men to send to women ... except maybe the banana.
I dunno, maybe there should be more, e.g. men's boxer shorts, briefs, tank top, and belt and buckle?

| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/9/2010 9:43:17 AM | There is no way I would pay money for "goldfish" points. What a silly idea. It reminds me of another "brilliant" idea a few years ago where you could buy REAL flowers and have them delivered to a persons home. That turned out to be a rip off, and certainly did not last long.
Also, for the life of me, I can not understand why Admin would want to have this gift shown on a persons profile?? What will he have up his sleeve next, I wonder?
|
| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/9/2010 9:53:40 AM | | I saw this addition earlier today! Tacky, to say the least!! I sure wouldn't pay for this, nor would I use them. Even if 10% buy these new gifts, money will be made, so there ya go! | |

| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/9/2010 11:03:23 AM | I think if POF decides to show the gifts – they may rethink the favourite lists as well as forum postings – they all openly display movement of people.
I also think the investment of gifts shows the urgency or possibility of detecting serious members to those of us that are here for forums only.....
....and where are the men's jockey shorts, condoms, after shave colognes and and and...lmao. So are women being objectified or are they really gifts...lol...just a thought!
Where do I find the other gifts for men ? sorry I didn't see them.
EDIT: You know there have been some excellent reviews of this site outside the forums - its unique and it does need to stay current - could be you need a panel of 'critiquers' as to what might be ideal....competition is high in the dating world....lol
|
| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/9/2010 2:34:57 PM | the tagline of 100% free is dwindeling...... should be 100% free, unless you want to compete with people who spend money on stupid stuff then it's 90% free, unless you want to be a serious member to show people your serious then it's 0% free.......
But that would make for a long tag line.
Atleast they dont offer those "surveys" like all the games on facebook do, where you do a "special "free" offer" for points.......... but maybe that's just because zynga is getting sued for it.

The site is 100% free, the option to pay for this is 100% voluntary.

How much money will users have to spend to remove the received gifts from the public display on their profiles?
Many people do NOT want to be in a popularity contest, which is why most people were very happy when the number of favorites was removed from the bottom of profiles.

OH! I just figured out who will use these gifts a LOT! It bypasses the mail restrictions. good catch. i didn't even think of that. i don't have any restrictions, but if i did, i doubt a virtual gift would pique my interest enough to correspond with someone who did not match my preset criteria, especially if they seemed to, in which case, i'd think they were barred by the IE filter.

| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/11/2010 6:52:46 PM | I see the layout of messages in our Inbox has changed, affecting this gift feature.
Now it is:
Delete This Message | Block User | View Block List | Reply with icons/gifts
The "gifts" is the original gifts type, requiring gift points accumulated by online activity, not the newer type requiring your $$$.
This newer type appears to be available only by the link at the bottom of a profile.

good catch. i didn't even think of that. i don't have any restrictions, but if i did, i doubt a virtual gift would pique my interest enough to correspond with someone who did not match my preset criteria, especially if they seemed to, in which case, i'd think they were barred by the IE filter. Yep . . I wouldn't think a seasoned POFer would be caught out, but the situation does raise some interesting questions.
F'rinstance . . .
If, for most users, the paid gifts avoid message restrictions, then why would that be so? . . and more to the point; should it be so? I just wonder because there are often threads started about wanting to have a message passed to a user because they have supposedly mistakenly blocked someone . . or some such reason / excuse. The usual response is that there are user privacy issues to be considered . . and that's fair enough to my mind.
If it's possible to send a paid gift and this circumvents mail restrictions, then maybe it's immune to the IE filter as well? After all, it's not a message as such. Maybe a IE filter blocked user is also blocked from sending paid gifts to users blocking them and that sounds more logical . . but is that how it works?
On the other hand, it's still only a gift and it might be difficult (maybe not impossible?) to easily argue that a gift is essentially a message from an undesirable person they wish to avoid contacting them. It could be interpreted that a user is not entitled to harass another user by sending an inappropriate gift . . same as an inappropriate message. So the question then becomes one of; Is it OK for a normal user to harass (and I use the term advisedly) another normal user by sending a perceived inappropriate gift but it's not OK for an IE blocked person to send someone a gift that could only be perceived as entirely benign and harmless.
Some if these gifts may be interpreted as inappropriate by some users . . and probably understandably, depending on who it comes from and the context. There's already a couple of people in this thread that don't like the idea of the panties, for instance. Can't fault that one myself, but panties just might be a fun thing for other users depending on their particular circumstances.
Maybe a paid gift isn't deemed to contravene any privacy or contact restriction concerns. Maybe an unwanted / inappropriate gift from a beauty challenged non-matching person on the other side of the planet might be considered SPAM. Maybe internal POF SPAM is OK . . and the fact it doesn't cost bandwidth is a little bonus. If paid gifts are the POF equivalent of winks as offered by other sites, then POF winks aren't SPAM at all. Of course, it could be that I'm over-thinking the whole thing.
But why is a paid, 40-goldfish Teddy Bear better than a 55 'free activity points' Teddy Bear? And under what circumstances might that 'Human Heart' be appropriate, fun or anything else? I admit that one mystifies me, but at only 10-goldfish it's cheap enough, at least.
I'm more posing questions than really looking for concrete answers which might not be even available at this point and, in any case, you guys will have to figure this out because I'm not stumping up the $10, OK. Anyway . . I did like the typo at the bottom of the paid gifts page that reads: More Gits

| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/12/2010 11:48:57 AM | Oh my goodness.. these gifts... having them line up on the bottom of your profile to show how many have paid for you... how juvenile. Very HighSchool-ish.
Lots of games can be played now... and one being that they also can be used to discredit someone. The person receiving the panties is stuck with them being on their profile for 3 weeks, (or 2, I forget), whether they want the gift or not. I can hear it now... "But Mary, I don't even KNOW the person who sent me panties, honest!"

| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/12/2010 9:11:58 PM | i recieved one of the new gifts today from someone i thought i had blocked from contacting me. its nothing too tacky, just a bottle of perfume but im still annoyed that i cannot remove it from my profile.
three weeks is a ridiculous time for it to be on display! why cant there be a box to tick if you want them to show and one to tick to keep them private?

| New feature for January 2010 Send a Gift Now Posted: 1/12/2010 10:20:50 PM | Gosh, maybe someday I'll be lucky enough to receive a cartoon steak as a gift...
*swoon*
(Eta: Huh. It looks like I can leave myself gifts as well. So I can fake being popular, I spose??)
