How to give a good gift for Valentines?Page 1 of 1
It will be close to 5 months with my fella come Valentine's day, and we have discussed doing something for it. I do plan on talking some more about it with him, but I wanted some other guys opinions as well.

I'm a baker, so I was thinking of baking some cute cookies that look like conversation hearts with special messages on them, but I have a feeling that won't be enough. I'm a down to earth, easy to please kinda girl, and would love to get something small and cute like that instead of jewelry or electronics (like he got me for Christmas). I plan on making the card too.

So, having said that, what do guys like getting? I do have a great idea of something I want to give him, but I think that's more a birthday present than Valentines however (which is a few months later).

He enjoys sports, cars (he fixes up his all the time, and does all his own maintenance), fish/aquariums, photography, cooking. I did a basket of different beers and glasses for Christmas and don't want to go for that again.

Any thoughts?

Oh... I plan on cooking a nice meal and renting a movie or two that he would like (no chick flicks... I hate chick flicks)

My first reaction was a pair of kissing fish. But then I remembered that in my tank...not all fishies play well with others. Having your "love bird fish" munched by the others wouldn't be cool. Or they get sick and belly up.

I think any gift that reflects thought of "who I am" or who I am to the giver is always a winner. Regardless of the cost or size.

Even a simple card that took some time to find "the right one" or written word inside.

Still like the fish idea...especially is you met him here. But it's a gamble.

Edit:

If you do the fish thing...find out what kind of tank...salt or fresh water and what kind of fish. If you get the species of one or two...it will give the pet store people an idea of the level of aggressiveness and compatibility.

Don't ask dude at wal-mart. Go to real pet store.

It is usally an inch per gallon per fish so good to know the size of the aquarium. google what size kissing fish get to be as adults to be sure. There might be enough fish in his tank already. If you buy too many fish they will just die off to compensate space. There are fish compatability charts somewhere if your interesting in wanting to know which fish go with what. It is an fine hobby you can pick up. Maybe if he doesn't have one already by now tripod for his camera. Maybe a cooking gadget he doesn't have yet. Like a crock pot, or a blender, or capacino maker, something they have space for it in thier kitchen.

Go out to a nice dinner together . Give him a cookie bouquet with two tickets to a sports game of his liking.
Go have a couples massage and then make sparks. ;)
nibble on cookies, chocolate and each other in front of the fire with good music and a great glass of wine.
Have fun!

To me it sounds like you've already answered your own question.
You said he likes cooking, and honestly I believe every man loves a home made meal cooked by the woman they love, so some love message cookies would be real romantic(homemade cookies=awesome ). Also since you are cooking a nice meal and just cuddling afterwards watching a few movies that you both enjoy sounds like a really good night. Everything you are doing would be better than any gift I could think of simply for the fact that you put your heart into it and really thought about it.
Remember, gifts are materialistic things, and that being said, not everyone needs them to be happy, sometimes all they need is you.

Why do we need another day when gifts are expected? Aren't Christmas, birthdays, and anniversaries enough?

Screw Hallmark. Do nothing on this manufactured holiday.

I'll tell ya what you can do for him...

give him a free pass not to spend $100 on roses that 2 weeks ago were worth $5...plus another $100 dinner and so forth...

and give him the best loving you can give him that night.

Get a little freakier for him in the bedroom, let him teabag you or something. Dip dip dip. A nice watch would be sufficient too along with the card and the cookies. You could also just rent a nice hotel room with a big jacuzzi, it doesn't matter if it's in the next town over or 100 miles away it's still getting away from the norm.

Ask him to come to your place. Wear nothing except some cake frosting covering your nipples and labia. Ask him if he wants a home-cooked meal or skip it and go straight to dessert.

Problem solved.

am I weird to think Valentines day is for the ladies? Men showing how much he loves his woman? Kids showing how much they love their mom? I never bought gifts for a guy on this day, but I get cards and flowers.

ps.... i did make nice dinner though, then some steamy long sex to show him how much i loved him. And, he was expecting it after the gifts lol

My family stopped doing holidays years ago. It's nice to no longer have to deal with people being all wishy washy about what they want, and then disappointed with what you delivered. Honestly, there are not many gifts out there that would get me as excited as I used get to over childhood toys (but I admit I'd freak out if I got an airplane).

Instead, we have resorted to doing this together on special occasions. Cooking meals, going to bakeries, etc.

Maybe you could take him to an auto show, local aquarium, art gallery, or live performance. Or you could do something outdoorsy like a hike, skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, beachfront walk, etc.

I've always said to give a gift that comes from YOUR thoughtful place.

guys are usually practical. They think practicality when they buy gifts..

There was a scene in a movie, I THINK It was the movie where both Michael Douglas and his father Kirk worked in a film for the first time.

Well, Michael's marriage wasnt going THAT well, the image was one of being a little stale.

At their anniversay dinner, he gave his wife a card that had inside a brochure of a custom all-in-one sewing machine. His wife started going off about it being SO SO SO UN-romantic.. a MACHINE?? To what.. Start sewing you shirts?? etc etc

Michael looked at her and said:

"I've been hearing for years that you really wanted to indulge your hobby of making things, that it was something you missed doing. You always say I dont listen to you. I thought with this, it would show that I HAVE been listening."

He left the restaurant and the look of "Oops, I think I messed up" was ALL over her face.

Stop worrying that "it wont be enough" affection and budding love isnt measured by the price tag, or the EXACT fit of any particular gift.. It IS "the THOUGHT that counts" and you'll also get an opportunity to see how he DOES respond to your thoughtfulness.

Is he gracious, appreciative and grateful? Then he might be "that man" worthy of a commitment with.

Just a thought.

Valentine's Day is for lovers so do something romantic. Just don't treat it like Christmas and get him a tie.

Any thoughts?

My thought is

I have a feeling that won't be enough

should scare you.
What do you mean not enough?
Not enough to make you happy that you got a gift that you are happy about giving?
Or not enough to compensate him for his time and affection?

what do guys like getting?

Depends on the guy.
Some guys are uncomfortable with gifts. Especially if they don't know you that well. Because they don't know if you are trying to buy something from him, or then expect something from him.
IME some women will do the whole "here's some cookies, now where's my exclusivity talk and engagement ring?" thing.

Some guys would rather avoid valentines day altogether because they see it as simply consumption and consumerism and they want their relationship to have meaning. So would far prefer you to say "screw valentines day" and then get him something sweet on february 21st just because.

Some guys want to make sure to get you a little bit "better" present than you get them, just so they can feel superior in the relationship.

I can guarantee 100% of guys like it if you show you are paying attention to who they really are, not just what they do.

Don't worry about getting him a gift on valentines day, just don't forget the March 14 holiday.

Steak & Blowjob day.

Google it, it's an actual holiday.

Arecpea: I agree and I'm a woman, the guy just doesn't care, why do you think so many of them forget.

If you want to get him something get him something he wants, not something you think he wants. You said he's into cars so think around that.

Does he like classic cars? How about a die cast model of his favorite classic car... think outside the box guys would rather have something useful or fun.
