'Dubstep'.. Not everyones cup of tea but it's growing on me. Page 1 of 4    (1, 2, 3, 4)
I've recently started listening to a type of music called 'Dubstep'. It's a comparatively new type of sound. It can be very mechanical.
Two tunes that strike a chord with me (type into YouTube):

'Mt Eden Dubstep (HD)- Sierra Leone' ... It's 5:18 long.

'Dubstep- "Dank Dub"...' ... It's 1:53 long.

What do you think of Dubstep? Quite a few people chalk it down as just 'noise' with no emotion behind it. Is it?

I've not listened to the songs you've listed, but I do quite like it. Depending on the situation etc.

I definitely wouldnt class it as just 'noise', but I suppose I can see where people could get the 'no emotion' thing from, but would again disagree.

My problem with the genre is all the remixes going about. I know this is how some people start producing music and that it can be an easy way to get noticed through 'searches', but i find it quite boring and lacking in imagination . Saying that, I did listen to the Benga album 'Diary..' about 6 months ago and found it a bit boring too.

I think for the time being it's either listening to a single tune at a time or a good DJ set for me. I should probably listen to more but I've got more than enough music to listen to at the moment.

Its definately not a new sound, its been around for a while, but under different guises.....

There's a clear cut 2 styles, a very machine sound heavy bassline sound and a very reggae dubby sound......

I listen to a lot of dance in general and dubstep is good, but i like it to sound nasty.

Dubstep has been around since 2000 or shortly thereafter but was much lower key and primarily based around Croydon I believe. Since then it's come out a bit more, and been hybridised further to a degree.

The trouble with dubstep is, like every form of electronic music, there are countless varieties, so it's pretty hard to define it as a brand without countless self sampling.

As the poster above said, you can split it into two camps mainly (heavy machine and more dubby) but still the best way is to experiment via trolling on dubstep forums for mixes and stuff, lots of unsigned artists producing some pretty good stuff (well I used to check out more just under a year ago so not entirely sure if this is still the case or it's been overloaded similar to DJ culture)

I like my dubstep pretty dubby and trancy in general, though there are some darker mixes out there which are good stuff.

Windfall by Boxcutter is probabley my favourite dubstep tune, well it's one I find I am always in a mood to listen to and it fits!

In answer to what you said it seems to have been locked down a lot DJ wise, but its a massive scene where i am, in the south london/croydon/brighton areas......

I really like 16 bit tunes, they're a dubstep duo producers

I see Dubstep as a right place right time sound really. Its great, but depends on your mood as to when you want to hear it. But I do like some of that new stuff by Bug,Jaymo, Ed Solo,Boxcutter etc.

I'm not a huge dubstep fan but it does seem to be the only electronic genre that if you check out someone's recommendations you might actually hear something interesting.
The college radio station here has a few hours a week of djs spinning dubstep..I guess thats how I prefer to listen to it, not knowing what is coming next and of course playing it loud in the car doesn't hurt...
I like the "heavy machine" dark stuff alot more, have found some pretty cool dark dj sets online.

Best radio show for underground dub step, drum n bass and electro mixs. BBC have axed the program and the whole station so only 2 or 3 more shows left

I go go dance for raves, and more than anything dubstep rooms. Anything by Doctor P (especially sweet shop), Cragga, Rusko, Chase and Status...

If you go through that you'll find tons of filthy beats. They're a bit mixed in with other songs I fav'd, but I make an effort to add the best dub tracks I come across.

My ears have been opening their ranges lately. I found them playing in encinitas this summer on FB. So i youtubed a bunch of it. and was pretty intrigued. This is exactly what i''ve been creating with Acid pro. ..except my versions suck. I've been living in a world of METAL and POST PUNK and Pre Punk but never really enjoying PUNK.. . and also listening to some awesome christian rock.

DUB-STEP is my new obsession. Goes well with working out.

Ive produced and co produced a lot of different types of music. I've recently fallen in love with the new age dubstep. I must say it is the most difficult music too produce/compose and do it right. I love it.

Skrillex is the man, but also check out a good buddy of mine who is blowing up Western Canada "Mark Instinct"

I really don't get it. I might be able to find it enjoyable if I were on copious amounts of narcotics...but that's it.
It sounds like Transformers transforming.
I'm just annoyed at the fact that an ENTIRE GENRE of "music" has emerged, simply by adding the same sound effect over and over to an otherwise normal song. As a music fan, I seriously and completely do not like dubstep.

Brand new on this site and kind of exploring all the different functions. Didn't think I'd end up in a room with a bunch of dudes talking about the mighty Dubstep movement, but alas here we are.

I make Dubstep and run a Dubstep Crew in the Miami-area. My background is Punk, Hardcore, Oi, Ska/Reggae, Death Metal, and Golden-era Hip Hop. Dubstep is definitely the most significant new music scene, considering that nothing else is new. It is superior however to other styles, in that it is infinite. It is nowhere as simple as it is being portrayed in some of these posts, but it's understandable; if you judged Punk or Hardcore by the internet and never went to a show you wouldn't really know what you were talking about. Kind of like saying you hate a certain kind of people without having ever actually met one.

If you have never been to a proper Dubstep event with big bass speakers in a dark, intimate-type of venue, you don't know what it sounds like. It's Bass music, requires big subs(sub-woofers 15'', 18''). For me the defining features are 1. Bass-driven 2. 70/140 bpms/tempo 3. "two-step" beat pattern. Beyond that the artist is completely free.

It began with the Dub Reggae-oriented sounds of Horsepower Productions, Digital Mystiks, and others, into the more dance-oriented stuff like Skream, Benga, and Plastician. My Crew, Dubstep Disyplz focuses on the evil, dark, dirty sounds of artists like Funtcase, Datsik, Cookie Monsta, Excision, 16-Bit and others. However, there is room for everything in between from N-Type to Rusko, to Hatcha, to Flux Pavillion to The Widdler.

Don't sleep on it, it's the future. The "wobble" sound, or oscillating bass, while not essential in a Dubstep tune, is in my eyes equivalent to the universal Ohm, the very vibration of the universe itself. It is awesome to do drugs like X and K to though, ha. Plus we smoke blunts freely at all Dubstep events basically. Not the right music for those of my Hardcore and Punk brethren who are Straightedge!

Nice one m8. Being as this is a so-called "dating site", feel funny checking lads profiles , but had to see where you were coming from.

Yeah, looks like you know your stuff in general. UK culture, Martial Arts, Dubstep, u got the right idea about life m8. Ha.

You need to come to Miami sometime m8. I'm personal friends with Hatcha, Skream, Plastician, ask them about Diablo from Miami. South Florida is the best, you'll love it. I'm ATT since it was Carlson Gracie Demolition Team before BTT. I'll hook you up to train as well.

Gotta check what you listed, not familiar. I'll shoot one back though; Funtcase mix with Skydro. Not on youtube. Google it. It'll take you to a written interview and a soundcloud mix. Proper. I like Southbound Hangers, Dr. Philth, Cookie Monsta, don't know if you guys there hate that. My boy from Mia Juan Basshead and mc Jumanji have already played Fabric twice, I want to go next time. Terry/Hatcha says I can stay with him in Croydon.

Whoever makes it to the others turf first takes the other lad out to the local battle cruiser or slapper hang out. You go aggro with the football scene/terrace culture? I saw you support Arsenal. I have homies in Man U Red Army and respect Millwall F-Troop and the current Bushwackers the most in terms of hard firms.

Rusko is the shit; Woo-boost, Hammertime, Jehova, others...

Never feel shy with Dubstep lad, find your own place and hopefully contribute new music and propel it froward.

Dubstep is intrinsically the most progressive of all genres to date...

Whats Happening. . So,I've been a hardcore techo man for over a decade now. I actually started working with Dubstep and made a few tracks over the past couple of years. I Love It. Until about a month now, I was the #1 Ranked Electronica/Dance DJ in the Reverb Nation, which I held for over a Year. Now I've slipped to the number 2 spot..FOR NOW..HA! You should check me out and see what you think of my music & mixes. I have alot of FREE downloads. .From ringtones to hour mixes. www.reverbnation.com/thedjpurplehaze I've also got a couple up on my youtube accound under the same name: www.youtube.com/thedjpurplehaze I'm always looking for some fresh feedback,to keep me on my toes...haha Preciate Your Time. . . d(>_<)b Because of SOO many genres can be derived from the "techno" label. I'd have to say,it's still my favorite. However Dubstep Is Right Up There With It.
