| | Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington?Page 1 of 2 (1, 2) | | Seems all I see nowadays are people in sweatshirts and casual wear. A lady at work even told me that they wear sweatpants at Microsoft! It seems to me that people used to take pride in their appearance and now they often don't put in any effort. I see this in women AND men around here, and I mean from Tacoma to the Canadian border! I still dress nice, but I get odd looks because of it. Went to an interview for a new job last week and the woman there was wearing a hooded sweatshirt. Is it considered 'un-cool' in this region to present a classy, professional, clean image? What is the deal, I grew up here and it just seems to be getting worse and worse!? | |

It's similar to the Bikini Police in Southern California ("Sir! Yes, you, the 300 pound man in the speedo. I need you to step into this trenchcoat, Sir. Why? Because Greenpeace just dispatched a team to attempt to unbeach you, Sir. Oh hell - Barry, go back to the car for the piano cover, would you?").

Even casually nice (dark jeans with a nice shirt) is better than sweats and a dirty t-shirt. One of my friends told me a gal actually came to meet him in a shirt with dog poop on the front of it because her stupid dog jumped on her before she left. How about going in and getting a change of clothes? OMG.

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 3/2/2010 10:41:10 PM | Speaking for Microsoft, its the culture there that the products matter more than formality. I have seen offices with bean bag chairs and black lights.
I have worked in and around Microsoft for 10 years now, and most of that time I have been happy to wear shorts and sweats and t shirts. Sicne I did phone support or back end analysis, I was never in a customer facing position, that was acceptable.
Last year though, my vendor company imposed a dress codes: Slacks or nice jeans and polo or collared shirts.
I resented it...For a couple weeks. Now I find I like wearing clothes a bit nicer than I did, and the occasionally casual day is more of a holiday.
So I guess maybe I just got lazy for a while, and now I care a bit more.

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 3/3/2010 12:16:12 PM | Bravo to you darlin', keep dressing up!! There is nothing more lovely, sexy and appreciated than a lady who takes the time to put all together.....and that doesn't mean over the top with the botox, frosted hair etc.. A nice dress, or properly cut slacks with some great posture....posture is sexy by the way.
I'll spend more time noticing an average or less than average gal who knows how to dress over a more attractive gal who looks like a train wreck....whether she's in sweats, or done up over the top to look like the Bellevue cliche. Cheers to you babe! Paul

I still don't get and I suppose never will figure out the comfort of wearing the waist of our pants around your knees.

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 3/7/2010 2:41:22 PM | | Actually, I wear corporate attire - slacks and a blouse. I pull my hair back, in a nice clip, and often will wear earrings to complement the hairclip - I wear minimal makeup (a swipe of blush and mascara most days). But I work in an environment that can go between very casual and corporate casual. I feel I am taken more seriously when I am wearing my corporate attire. However, weekends are baggy t-shirts and comfy blue jeans... and I never leave the house with my hair a total disaster. I have some standards. :P | |

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 3/18/2010 2:55:49 AM | | theres nothing wrong with wearing nice clothes but i have no problem with people being casual. i know for myself i probably dont make as much money as you if that is a really important issue for you you can probably afford really nice clothes. as for me several $20 slacks and some $6 fruit of the loom t shirts in about a 8 or so colors works wonderfully for me. i still look decent. but I also love to wear my hooded sweaters too. nothing wrong with that. one persons style is there own. as long as the person is fully clothed that should be a good thing. | |

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 3/18/2010 5:56:24 PM | | It's not about money. I get a good deal of my wardrobe from second hand stores, to be real honest. Jeans look good on people, I guess it's just the styles these days. You can find brand new ripped up jeans in the stores at premium prices. Just doesn't make sense to me... | |

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 3/20/2010 7:00:08 PM | | I have wondered about this for Washington too. When I first arrived in this state I went out with some co-workers for drinks in Bremerton and dressed as I would have almost anyplace else I've lived for such an occasion. I felt way over dressed. And I have noticed that the 'dressing up' seems to be the same 'style'--like going to an establishment and all the guys are wearing the exact same thing. | |

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 3/21/2010 7:46:25 AM | First, you're all over the board with this topic so of course people will agree. I mean, who would not agree that someone with dog chit on them is inappropriate? But that's not 'not dressing nice', that's an oblivious slob. Separate dress for work vs. dress for social occasion vs. for running errands. Separate dress for work in an office vs. 'dirty' job.
If you're going to talk about not dressing nice to run errands I'm going to say who gives a sh1t? Running errands I'm on a mission to get them done as quickly as possible, not to impress anyone that I clean up well. I clean up well, I don't need that validation from strangers.
Social occasions - I dress appropriate for the situation. When it's raining (9 months of the year) or snowing I am not going to wear a dress. It's that simple. If I'm going somewhere nice, slacks and blouse in bad weather, dress in good weather. Jeans most of the rest of the time. Sweats when I skate (my most frequent social situation because that's what I do each week with my friends). Make-up only for special occasions.
I guess I'll buck the trend - My job used to require a suit/dress except Friday was corporate casual (slacks). I hated it. I sit at a desk, on the phone or computer, 10+ hours per day. I don't meet customers/clients or executives face-to-face anymore. There's no one to try to impress with my appearance. My clothes do not define me, nor the quality of my work product. Last I checked we don't have a criteria on our performance reviews for 'dresses for success'.
Still, I dress for the situation. My office allows jeans so I wear jeans. I would not wear sweats or a hoodie to work. If I get that job at Microsoft and my work group allows sweats I may just comply and downgrade my wardrobe further.
For me the bottom line is - why do you even care what other people, especially strangers, wear?

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 3/21/2010 4:41:05 PM | For me it's more about cleanliness. Men will come in the store where I work, their hands filthy from working and hold out their nasty hand for me to give them their change. I don't care what you wear, just please be clean if you're going to be in public. You know they're handling things when they shop and that's just so unsanitary

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 3/28/2010 9:22:52 AM | | This lack of attention to personal appearance seems to be a northwest thing. It goes beyond clothes , like getting your hair cut or going to the dentist for missing teeth. Not sure what the teeth thing is about since people who appear presentable open their mouths and their teeth are missing or in terrible shape. | |

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 3/29/2010 8:49:08 AM | | Most of the women I've met here in Washington don't like when I get a haircut or shave. I know this is a personal preference and various women like various things, but I keep finding that majority of women seem to say they want 'shaggy' and 'scruffy'. Kind of the middle ground of not a crew cut, but not long hair either. | |

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 3/30/2010 5:23:56 AM | | I think you are on to something treffle... the scruffy look (funny you say scruffy - my daughter used that term Saturday) is attractive. The day old growth on the chin, the disheveled look, is attractive. I like to date men who are a bit rough around the edges (to use that overused term) but who can also clean up nicely for a night out at some corporate event I have to attend. | |

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 3/30/2010 8:40:18 PM | | Wow, I find that really surprising, I've been lamenting that there are no clean cut men around. Shaggy and scruffy just isn't my idea of attractive. ha! | |

| Is it a crime to dress nice in Washington? Posted: 4/6/2010 8:17:35 PM | | It's not so much that it's a crime. It's a matter of practicality and the culture. Generally, on the West Coast, people dress more casually than you would see in, say, New York or Boston. If I went to New York wearing what I wear to work everyday (clean blue jeans, button-up shirt, leather jacket (yes I wear animals)), I'd look way under-dressed. The thing is, we still are considered the "New West," and things aren't as formal around here. That's not to say that we don't know how to dress up. I have a pin-stripe suit, nice slacks, and so on, but I don't wear it all the time. We also have the whole passive-aggressive cold shoulder routine down solid. | |
