Is it possible for someone without access to my computer to see something I have googled.
I have a suspicion that someone I know is messing about with fake profiles (not on this site) I have googled an obscure place name I went walking to yesterday, and now another fake profile has popped up with the location I googled, as their location.
I think it is more likely the person I know is putting the fake profiles up, knowing I googled this place, but he says it is possible to set up a programme to do this.
I know its possible to hack into my computer, is it possible without my knowing,

It is possible that you may have been tricked into installing a keylogger. They would be able to see what you were doing on your pc. Have you run an antivirus scan?

see if you can download "windows defender"...it's a free program and works quite well. Do a full scan of your computer with it, and see what it comes up with.

He/she is probably just checking your google search history.

There is no such thing as privacy on the Internet.
When you clear your search history it only clears it on your computer....google still keeps tabs on you.

^^^^thank you. The friend was with me when I googled the place we walked to.
My concern was more that a person placing fake profiles (not this site) has placed another profile with the place name I google as his location. So it looks as though I have I been hacked into. I have no other problems with my computer, but I have deleted my profile from the other site.

It's possible that you have a cyberstalker or you might know the person who hacked your computer because the average hacker could care less about setting up a profile with your location....and unless your antivirus/anti-malware found anything since the incident, your computer is most likely infected with some kind of malware (If the person is skilled enough to hack your computer it's a good chance they know about & use backdoors/trojans/rootkits...)

If you believe your machine is compromised; have it checked ASAP. Do you have any "tool bars" installed in your browser? Remove them all. They are not needed any way; just chew up resources, and phone your data back to their servers.

From a known clean computer download the above linked scanners and run them on the machine. Never download any of these programs from a compromised machine; it defeats their purpose. I'm reposting the next quote from one of my old threads. Get a live CD and boot from it to run a scan, after running the update of course.

On a separate machine; download and burn an anti-virus rescue CD. Here is a free download http://www.freedrweb.com/livecd/ . Download and burn the ISO file listed. Boot from the CD and let it do a scan of the drive to clear out any problems. Booting from the CD prevents Windows from loading and locking out possibly infected files. Run the virus CD scan a few times to verify it doesn't find anything it missed the first time.

The best advice I can give is to consult with one of your friends that has the most experience in these matters. Your local "IT Squad" at the mega-store will basically wipe your PC, and lose anything that was on it. Best to save that as a last resort. However, you want them to make sure that they have verified that your backed-up data is clean.

You would be surprised what a good hacker can do, most leave traces of their activities behind them, but of course the best of them leave no trace at all, the only reason you know they were there is because they allowed you to know.
They are the ones you have to be afraid of... but not even knowing they are there makes that tricky.

Do all of the above of course, all brwsers are vulnerable to sites if they are setup right.

IM clients like Live (MSN), AIM, Yahoo etc are also vulenerable too, things like sending pictures and files to people need a connection, that connection can be traced, from there they get your IP and then your whole network if they want...
All those free routers given by ISPs are not secure, even the rebranded Cisco gizmos are not impossible to crack...

Daters beware!

I have people's IP and can't get their whole network, if they even have one.
In fact anyone with a website can have millions of IP's of their visitors.
You can't hack someone just because you know their IP for heaven's sake.

OP I would suspect the friend you went to that place with. That would be much
more logical, if you have a friend who knows you are interested in that town.

Someone wouldn't hack your computer, see what you googled, and then
set up a profile using that town. For what reason? Thats an awful lot of
trouble to go through just to create a fake profile that you may or may not
respond to.

Why don't you write to that person with the profile, see what they have to say,
try to get a phone number for him or chat with him? It should be simple enough
if you chat with him to see if it is someone you know. Either that or just ignore
the supposed fake profile.

Also if you have antispyware installed that should catch a keylogger.

If someone really is spying on you most likely it will be someone with access
to your computer who simply looks at your browsing history. You can set
your computer to delete this after every session.

An IP Address is like the address to your house, it's unique.

With an IP Address you know the location of the computer (that someone might want to compromise). If you want so send a package to someone you just need an address (IP Address) and the mailman/mail-lady (Routers) will take the package there via the fastest/most efficient route....well tries to take the fastest route/road (The Information Super Highway).

If the package contains something malicious like a bomb (malware/exploit) to blow open a door -or- If the package contains something to find existing open doors (port scans) it has found a way in with a couple additional steps . When a door is opened a robber (hacker) can send/leave an opening/backdoor (rootkit/trojan/etc...) to get in for return visits -or- can place a surveillance cameras (keyloggers) in your home (computer) to know what you are doing (typing).... it happens all of the time. That's why Network Security is so important.

Ever wonder how Remote Desktop Support works? Almost the same way except you open the door for them and hopefully they don't leave behind any surprises.

Here is an article:
http://meussententia.wordpress.com/2008/06/14/hacking-101-hacking-using-ip-address-of-the-victim/

Hacking 101: Hacking using IP address (of the victim)!

So say somehow somewhere we ended up choosing a target to start wreaking havoc upon. All we need is an IP Address. Theres plenty of papers out there that go into how to obtain an IP Address from the preferred mark of your choice. So I’m not going to go into that subject. Alright so say we got the targets IP Address finally. What do we do with this IP Address. Well first ping the IP Address to make sure that its alive. In otherwords online. Now at the bottom of this document ill include some links where you can obtain some key tools that may help on your journey through the electronic jungle. So we need to find places to get inside of the computer so we can start trying to find a way to “hack” the box. Port Scanners are used to identify the open ports on a machine thats running on a network, whether its a router, or a desktop computer, they will all have ports. Protocols use these ports to communicate with other services and resources on the network.[......]

BTW: Rootkits/Trojans are very difficult for anti-malware apps to identify because they are loaded very early on (usually w/video drivers) and can appear to be normal.

Anyone's IP is being scanned by hackers all the time.
Hackers scan huge blocks of IPs constantly.
I'm sure you know this. If you could see how many hackers scan any given IP
in an hour it would be hundreds.

The idea that a hacker would find her IP, be lucky enough to find an open port,
not be blocked by her firewall or antivirus program,
then find her browsing history and from that make a fake profile on POF
just for her to find is unlikely to say the least.

There are various methods to resolve an IP Address.

Home Network Security:

How easy is it to break into my computer?

Unfortunately, intruders are always discovering new vulnerabilities (informally called "holes") to exploit in computer software. The complexity of software makes it increasingly difficult to thoroughly test the security of computer systems.

When holes are discovered, computer vendors will usually develop patches to address the problem(s). However, it is up to you, the user, to obtain and install the patches, or correctly configure the software to operate more securely. Most of the incident reports of computer break-ins received at the CERT/CC could have been prevented if system administrators and users kept their computers up-to-date with patches and security fixes.

Also, some software applications have default settings that allow other users to access your computer unless you change the settings to be more secure. Examples include chat programs that let outsiders execute commands on your computer or web browsers that could allow someone to place harmful programs on your computer that run when you click on them.

Its not luck sweety.

Computers exist in a world that has rules, those rules can all be broken.

Your firewall offers protection yes, but it is not inpenatrable.
I have never seen a firewall outside of dedicated hardware firewalls that was inpenatrable (and I dont mean the Linux boxes running as hardware firewalls (smoothwall for instance))

Yes it is unlikly with a limited level of knowledge, but with a level of knoweldge that places all her inet activity 6 clicks away its not so pie in the sky.

hun some people started pissin about with computers 10years ago and havent done a god damn thing since... just lived in that world ever since getting better and better, and their idea of sex is to play with a cute lil lady in just that kind of way.

Jeremey Clarkson thought the same thing... only about his bank account.
He was sceptical like you... he paid the price for it too... google clarkson bank details

He was of the same mind as you... he just like you had a little knowledge and thought it was a lot... where as in reality its not even close to an understanding of the subject let alone detailed knowledge of it.
