Not some thing I really need but...Page 1 of 1
...I am more aware of the trolling issue than I used to be and I realized one very obvious thing that might assist in preventing much of this trouble is simply how POF allows us users to access the messages since we were last on. The easiest ways is to hit My Forums, of course, but this does not bring up anything new and going back to old forums often seems to encourage the more in-your-face sort of debates as the new content is skipped by.

In other words the user has to WORK to find the newer content. They have to go to each forum, individually and separately. There are no pointers to differentiate past from present OR what has been read to what is new.

So would this be hard to implement?

Long long time ago, in a E-galaxy far far away there was a piece of software that did this very smoothly:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citadel_BBS

<div class="quote">Citadel further improved the user experience in the area of command and control. Based on Alan Kay’s philosophy of user-interface design, “Simple things should be simple; complex things should be possible,” and influenced by the fact that Citadel was developed in an era of 300 baud modems, the basic and most heavily used commands are accessed via single keystrokes. The most common commands are Goto (the next room with new messages), N ew messages (display the New messages in the room to the user), and Enter a message into the room. Other single keystroke commands exist as well, such as nown rooms, which lists the rooms known to the user.

That is it. A simple G, N, and repeat G & N keys until one was done and one was through a full range of threads(rooms) in a flash.

Later there was even a pause feature per page or if the user did not like that they could set the rate at which the text appeared (roughly according to the reader's ability to read, speedwise) FAR far simpler, easier, and user friendly. It was basically considered menu-less without the need for a GUI even though there obviously was a menu behind it all.

Seeing as the forums seem taxing to the owner thereof, perhaps streamlining their use would allow users to get through them quickly, off quicker and be done with them in order for others to get on.

Just a suggestion. Thanks for considering it!

edit: Please excuse the use of non-authorized commands within the text box. I realized this after saving so I am here going back in to fix them to the best of my ability.

I really do hope, for your sake, that someone can decipher your post and help you.

I, for one, cannot understand what it is that you want.

Using the forums poses no problem for me.

You've barely been here long enough to be aware of all the commands & features, much less the whole flow of things and more of an overall picture.

Decipher it? Yeah, it probably seems that way to a relative I'm trying to help because as a very long term user it seems obvious Big Fish wants less forums. But maybe less forums isn't the answer if there is a more eloquent & streamlined solution. The above is my proposal to such. Besides he has tried plenty of other suggestions... having three pictures of friends at the bottom of our profile (before your time), having music available under ones picture (now deceased as well) , having report image right below the picture, adding gifts and then even more gifts to satisfy both sexes( the women really wanted some things more appropriate to give as well ).

As well mods have mentioned keeping trolls in line is a continuous and ongoing problem. This might help them and make their workload less.

Now if the way the software functions sets people back in the same debate (very face to face -- tempting confrontation) most people are more than likely to get more inflammatory. Perhaps if the software did not work that way -- as in people are more directed to NEW or UNREAD content there would be less problems.

It's a good idea but perhaps I should have picked a better & more appropriate thread title. In any case he'll get around to reading it sometime or one of the mods will tell him if they see it might help them out. I've been a mod before and I know it's no easy task. Streamlining the software and changing features is usually worth trying. Some work. some don't. Won't break my heart if he doesn't do it, but I do speak from a place of experience.

Seeing as you've been around so long, you certainly should be aware of the fact that Big Fish has NO interest in the forums, improving them or otherwise, and would in fact just like them to die on out a natural death of something that gets no "mommy/daddy" attention!

And you know this how?

He's running a business and I think if people were polled it would be painfully obvious the majority of people found this place googling an issue, relationship or otherwise. It's how I found it. So it's really against his interests, businesswise, to cut the forums out -- despite whatever anyone thinks of them. The forums help people to find this place.

Coming from the other side of that issue how successful do you think, in the long run a celebrity like Lady Gaga's approval of POF is?

She has claimed her celibacy. Oh yeah, there may be a temporary spike of users. But hardly conducive to getting long term attention. Ask yourself how many people devoted to celibacy need or want a dating site??? While google and the forums keeps bringing them in.
