several years i retrieved my renewed passport
i was shocked to see the clerk who served me had three
metal studs in his chin . two months later while eating
a bowl of noodle soup on a residental soi in bangkok a
young caucasian man walked by . his head was shaved
and covered with geometric tattoos . i was stunned

three days ago i rode the bus . at one stop a crowd
of teenage students boarded . as they passed my seat
i saw many had rings in their lips or eye brows
others wore studs in their faces . intially i was
astonished . then i did not know what to think

but slowly and surely i went numb and returned home

Back in '85, in London
I saw homeless people for the first time
A man eating orange peels from a trash can
Outside the Underground station
I was stunned.

Years later in Athens
I saw an old woman sleeping on a winter night
On a piece of cardboard on a park bench.
I was stunned, but called the social services.
They came and took her to a home.

And later again, I saw someone I knew from school
in a drug-rehab house I volunteered.
I talked to him and he remembered me
And I was stunned
Realizing how f'd up a life can turn

A while ago I heard a mother bragging
About the intelligence her kid exhibits
On an on, about schools for the gifted
And the life prospects for the brilliant
And I was stunned
by the naivete of the hopeful.

In 8th grade that kid was my friend
Then he didn't come to school
Carbon monoxide in the garage
Because he felt an unloved trained performing animal
I was sad, but not stunned
