We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car. At other times this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses... To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special! And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. | The meaning of UP! lol Posted: 8/4/2012 7:31:35 PM | | Well by doing some word replacement yes UP has a few meaning.....I am a linguist of sorts and see that yes UP has the meaning of being in the sky. But for a lot of the expressions you can take out up and it still has a similar meaning.....it merely is used as an emphasis of sorts. I am also sure that if you looked in a linguistic journal it would explain more to you about how it is used in those phrases. | |
