Ireland in FallPage 1 of 1
I will be going to Ireland at the end September for the first time. I am really excited. I have wanted to go for quite some time. I will be landing in Dublin and then driving across country to Galway, where I will be attending a Christy Moore concert. The first night will be in Galway, with another night in Roscommon, and some time down in Cork. I will be there for a week.

I am looking for recommendations from others who have been there - what should I see? What is not to be missed? What should I avoid?

I enjoyed staying at the Clarence in Dublin for two days, then heading to the Killarney riding stables, from their - we took the ring of Kerry scenic drive. An amazing 9 day trip.

Also, if it on the way - the Waterford Plant is a must see too...

Some basic tips on International travelling, if I may? Call your credit card company, and ask them about the foreign money exchange rate. My card gave me an amazing exchange rate when making purchases. Also, if you have enough time, track the local currency strength against the dollar. It will fluctuate daily, and you will learn the average rate.

I love to travel, and have a gazillion other suggestions - If you are interested, send me an email, and I would be happy to go over what has worked for me, and what has not:)

Hey, Easygoing!

I tried emailing you but I am not allowed. So I will post what I was going to say here -

I am definitely interested in whatever suggestions you may have to offer!

This will be my first trip out of country (unless you count a couple of hours in Canada when I was much, much younger), so whatever advice you may have would be much appreciated.

Thank-you!

Hey there Sprite. Here's a few suggestions for you...

-Glendalough. Beautiful monastery just outside Dublin, set up in the hills by some lakes, about 1,500 years old.
-Ring of Kerry. Scenic drive in Co. Kerry that starts in Killarney.
-Cliffs of Moher. West Co. Clare.
-Blarney Castle. Kiss the Blarney Stone and get the girt of the gab, few miles north west of Cork City.
-The Burren, Co. Clare/Galway. Beautiful scenic area.
-Dingle. Town on the Dingle peninsula, Co Kerry. Beautifully set town, well worth a visit.
-Guinness Store House, Dublin. Go see where it's made.
-Kilmainham Jail, Dublin. If you've any interest in Irish history, well worth a visit.
-And of course a traditional music session in a pub wherever you may find it.

Hope some of these help, enjoy your trip.

The trip was absolutely fantastic. I will go back as soon as I can! The Cliffs of Moher were breath taking. I did kiss the Blarney Stone (so watch out, I am even more eloquent than I was before!) and the grounds to the Blarney Castle was beautiful.

It did indeed rain every day, but not enough to slow us down and we did have two full days of beautiful sunshine.

Thank-you to everyone who offered up suggestions. I would heartly recommend a trip to Ireland to anyone!

Don't forget to go North too.
Belfast - Kelly's Cellars, museum, the giants ring
Downpatrick - St. Patrick's grave?
The River Bann - earliest known settlement in Ireland 4,000 years ago
Navan Fort - Kings of Ulster coronation
Maghera - St. Lurach's 6th century
Giants Causeway
Bushmill's - first licensed distillery in Ireland 1600's.
Derry/Londonderry to some -the walled city, learn about bloody Sunday
Dungannon, Tyrone - the last hold out of the Great O'Neill's
Aye and then there is the north that is the south, Donegal.
The north is not as touristy and more real for me.
The best time I like to go is for Haloween - Derry has a huge parade, dancing to the bands, fireworks over the river foyle and everyone dressed up.

Oh and as someone else said dress warmly. Now once ya get there you can buy some of the most wonderful wool sweaters. However having done the Eurail , B&B, Youth Hostel thing when I lived over there I can't stress enough pack light and smart. I was too cool in the '80s not to have by 10lb BoonBox with me - Big mistake. Also I wore a sweat jacket under my black fringed buckskin jacket. Sometimes just not enough. Your on an island surrounded by water, wind and weird rain storms that come and go quickly. But towards the end of the month it gets colder and it cuts to the bone.

Your Irish eyes will love the Eurail views
If your next stop is Dublin…Limerick…Cork…Killarney , the Eurail Ireland Pass is indispensable. Not to mention getting to know the locals riding the rail alongside you.
Here's what you get:Unlimited travel on the national rail network of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland (see map).
Offers 5 days of unlimited travel within a 1 month period.
Travel days may be used consecutively or non-consecutively.
Free map with pass.

Seriously I would forget the driving thing. They have such EXCELLENT trains systems over there you'd be far better off doing it that way. Plus the cost of petro over there is outragous, insurance, an international drivers license. There are many ways of getting discounted things
for all age travel. Please really think more than twice before you do the rental. It's not easy to adjust to the road conditions, signs ect.

Stay out of Limerick city,it's lawless. It is controlled by gangs and drug dealers.Sadly weak and corrupt governments since independence have destroyed the country. The government is not in control but the criminals.
