Ok... I know I'm putting myself up infront of a fireing squad, but I have to say that it seems more women smoke than not. To me, it's a turn off. When I look at a person's profile and I see "often", "all the time", etc. next to an (IMO) attractive woman, I just move on. I know it limits my search but, dear lord, there's more women who smoke than don't. It's like that on every dating site.

I can handle almost anything, but smoking is a no-no to me. The fact that it's unhealthy is a given, but there's the odor, aging of the skin, necatine stains... yuck! Yet many people do it. I don't understand why.

I just wonder what you all think about this situation?

why? smoking is, as we all know, is an addiction. many people successfully quit, many don't, some will eventually succeed, some won't...

as for your situation, you're on the right track. if you don't like women who smoke, you simply keep fishin' what you don't want to do is begin dating a smoker in hopes of getting her to quit for you...

Well I smoke and it doesn't matter to me if they do or not.. Agree with ILUVMONKEYS, just don't ever start dating and try to change or ask them to give it up.

I for one don't smoke inside my house because of staining the walls, furniture etc. Won't be good when I go to resell it also most everybody I know doesn't smoke and figure there is no need for them having to sit in the smell. As for the bad for you and aging of skin, believe more lay out in the sun and such which does the same thing to your body and causes problems so I don't look at that part of it

I'm a smoker...so-therefore, I actually look for people who DO-smoke. Let's face-it...it's a big-part of our-lives, even if we are trying to quit. Personally, for-me...I'd rather avoid conflicts over something as-everyday as smoking. The last-thing I want, is to have someone try-to change-me (or to-feel like I need to quit, to have their full-approval). I'm 38, have smoked since age 14, have tried to quit numerous-times...but still-do. It's an addiction...granted...but the way I figure-it...either you do-it, or you-don't. Past-experiences have taught-me, though...most-people who don't-smoke, don't hit-it-off, with those who-do. There are plenty-of-things, that people disagree-about, which cause strife, and arguements, in a relationship...I just don't want the-issue-of smoking to be one-of-them.

Is smoking only about cigarettes? When I see someone says they smoke occasionally, I think it means pot. I know that should go under drugs not smoking, but pot smokers are a sly bunch.

Most women don't smoke. The American Lung Association says that in 2002, 20% of women in the US smoked. So it is 1 in 5. That is a lot higher than I expected. By now with all that is known and so many advertisements about it, I would have guessed only 1 in 20 still smoked. How can 1 in 5 women be so self-destructive?

One of the few good things - other than my children, that came out of my marriage is that he nagged me to death about smoking and I quit - 25 years ago. I'm very thankful for that, no matter how it was done. I don't rag anyone for smoking, and don't think nagging is the way to go, but am certainly glad to be free of the addiction. And 7 years of it - WAS an addiction. Quitting was extremely hard, and once in a while I still dream that I'm having a cigarette, and wake up thinking that I "fell off the wagon".

And-so??? What is wrong with smoking a joint...or cigarettes, if it helps-someone stay in-control, and make it through life? Would-you-rather, that they blow-up at you, become-involved in an arguement with-you, and/or ruin your/ their-mood... or let-them live in their "happy-place"? I think your frame-of mind, is far-more important in handling the strife in your life, than how you go-about achieving-it. Before we start blasting all those people who-smoke ( whether it-be cigarettes, or weed ), let's remember: there are many addictions that people can suffer-from. I don't believe that the person who doesn't drink-or-smoke; yet regularly-takes takes prescription-meds...such-as Tylonol-3's, Percacets, tranquilizers, muscle-relaxers/builders, or sleeping-pills, drinks-alcohol...is any-less addicted to something, than-someone who smokes. Is it self-destructive? Sure it is! But so-is gambling, sex ( ie.nympho-mania, both male and female), pills, shopping, etc. Everyone looks-for simple pleasures in-life; something to take away-pain, whether it-be physical, or mental. Some-people work-out, to the-point-of obsession. So, does-that make-them healthier, than their smoking-brethren? Not-really...since their addiction, is physical-pain. Anyone torn a hamstring, lately, or a quadracep-muscle? Hurts...doesn't-it? What are you taking, for-it, to help you make it through your day-to-day life? Percs? Other-painkillers? How's your stomach-feeling, when you use-them? All I'm-saying-is: don't discount someone who smokes-whatever, just because that helps-them. Everyone has weaknesses...even you non-smoking-types. As-charred, and deseased-as our lungs, and hearts may-be...we still are human...and as-long as we are still on this-earth...we still have the capacity to love. Peace!

Smoking actually makes a person less able to handle stress and emotional upset. They think it is a way to control their feelings. I works in the moment but overall it makes them dependent on the cigarette, so that when they don't have one they freak out and do all that unwanted stuff anyway. The fear of freaking out makes someone freak out. If they just shut up and had the feelings they were trying to hide from, they would have a chance to learn how to handle their feelings, which is a normal part of growing up. You shouldn't need to destroy yourself just to handle your emotions. Quit smoking and learn how to handle your emotions, and get on with your life. It is not hard to do once you make up you mind to do it. And there is abundant help available if you want some. many quit smoking programs include education about managing the feelings that smokers are trying to control to "get by" in life. Excuses are endless for someone who is afraid to quit. Smoking is a habit of excuses for not being yourself.

"Smoking is a habit of excuses for not being yourself"???Funny...I've-been a smoker for 24-yrs...and everyone who I've-met over the years, has come-to know-me as a a pretty-nice-guy ( not-trying to sound-conceited, here...just relaying what my friends say they think-of-me). When I smoke...I AM being-myself...I would like-to think, that, at 38 yrs-of-age, I know who I am. No-excuses, about-that. I also know the health-risks involved. I have tried everthing on the market, short-of hypnotization, to no-avail. Boy, I'd sure like to live in your rosy, clean-air, non-smoking-world! Oh, well...whatever it takes to "get-by", I-guess. Now...let me take a walk along our clean, smog-and-pollution-free boardwalk (snicker)...just as-soon-as the benzene-spill, or the sulfer-discharge from our local-chemical-plants, disapates!

I had smoked for 30 years before quiting, smoking, not smoking was my own personal choice, had nothing to do with personality, etc.Other smokers don't bother me, I try to stay tuned more to personality, but if its something you can't tolerate in someone, don't go out with them and keep looking, don't compromise your principles.

I don't care for smoke at all. I am allergic to it, and I have persitant asthma, so I can't be around it at all. Not to mention, who wants to kiss something that smells like an ashtray?

So I guess all of those out there who come home after work and have themselves a "cold one" are also just immature indivduals that are living in delusion about themselves and fear of their own feelings, right?!?!?

Give me a break...Even Ghandi got "high" on fasting...Ever fasted? It actually ALTERS the body's chemistry and can produce an altered state of mind...

It's all a question of degrees....

BTW: I don't do drugs, or alcohol with the exception of what is prescribed and recommended by my (Canadian) doctors, (not AS free with the prescription pad as their American counterparts, I hear), and have been trying to quit smoking, (with limited success) for my entire adult life...

I make no excuses, nor apologies...and I always try to consider the rights of non-smokers ,including my DOG!, wherever I may be...

As far as I'm concerned, everyone does what they have to to get by in Life...guess all of us aren't as lucky as some to live in a world that NEVER overwhelms them....

So another question is... Why would you start? Peer pressure? Family up bringing? Part of the times you grew up? I have to say that for me... none of those were true. I lived with mother who smoked. A grandfather who smoked. I had friends who smoked and it was popular to do it. I never did. Even when I was pressured by my peers to do it. I never had the desire to have a fire in my lungs.

So... what is the reason you started smoking?
