| | Puerto Plata, Dominican RepublicPage 1 of 1 | | Have bought my ticket for November 1st, now I am getting all the finer details organized. Looks like I will be staying in Puerto Plata, any tips for a 54 year old female first timer to DR? I plan on being down there for 3 + months, meeting up with friends from home, so am needing to know how to bank my money, places to purchase groceries, fun places to drink/eat at, things to avoid, etc. | |

I love being in the DR. I never had the chance to live there. but I stayed in a nice resort call Jack Tarr Village. It is a nice resort. I would say If you like the night scene go to this town call Montellano. There was a sweet bar/pub/nightclub there but I forgot the name I was there in 2003. The other place go to a town call Long Beach it is a good place to hang out with locals. So I wish I could help you with groceries but you can take me I will go with you and I do speak, read, and write in Spanish. Hehe. | |

| Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic Posted: 9/4/2011 12:15:42 PM | | There is a large grocery stores all throughout Puerto Plata. The town is actually kinda crappy, alot of crime, the sewage dumps into the ocean there and stinks pretty bad. I've never heard of any tourists actually staying in PP, most arrive at the PP airport to go on to Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada. There is an attraction closeby called Ocean World, not really worth seeing unless you have kids. The closest beach is Sosua Beach. Sosua has a great deal of sex tourism, so you'll see a lot of hookers in all the bars in the evening hours. Single females get plenty of offers as well from young men known as 'sanky panky' (gigalos) The beach is nice, with shaded trees. Each bar along the beach has chairs , there will be a small fee to sit in them. Its best to go to the same beach bar everyday and establish a relationship, If they know you are going t to be there for a couple of months they probably won't try to cheat you. All the beach bars will offer you drinks and food. Pay for each drink as you go, do not run a tab as they almost always try to cheat you on the final bill. Deep sea fishing there is very inexpenisve, the two of us got a half day for $100.00 US. Motorcycle taxi is the cheapest way to get around. You will approached by hucsters, beggers and drug dealers, but a polite no thank you works just fine, the area is well patrolled by the police. | |
