Who do you sit next to on the bus/train?Page 1 of 3    (1, 2, 3)
When taking public transport, what raws you more to a certain seat over others when using public transport. Personally, at some points I've had an empty seat next to me and yet the next new passenger decides to stand for 40mins than sit down, an at other times I've had people sit next to me when the bus is practically empty. I think it would be interesting to see what thought process people use when choosing a seat location on a full or empy bus.

When I step on the bus/train i think:
Am I going to be on long? If Y = go upstairs, IF N = sit as close to the exit as possible, while leaving pram/disabled/elderly seats free.

IF the majority of seats are full: (in order of preference)
- seat with the most space left for others. (there are lots of seat hogs)
- older women (tend to me friendlier, willing to let you make room to allow you to next to them)
- older men (tend to me friendlier, willing to let you make room to allow you to next to them)
- men and women my own age (usually mind their own business)
- stand
- children under 10 yrs of age

I would probably choose to sit next to another woman if there was a choice. If there was one seat next to a man I would sit there.
Was the person choosing to stand for 40 minutes, a woman?

Dont do buses...ever.

Trains I go for the ones that are not spreading over onto the empty seat so that I have my fair share of room, male or female dosen't matter...dont you just hate the guys that sit with legs akimbo and holding a broad sheet open to its full extent .....

Cinderfreakinella, the reason guys have to sit with their legs open is because the space between seats isn't big enough for anyone over 5'10. It's the only way most of us can sit without being in extreme pain.

I avoid sitting near kids who are allowed to do as they please on a bus and dont get told off. I've caught myself a couple of times giving a kid a cold stare and it usually works to keep them away from me. Kids on buses dont bother me in general. Its the ones where mum is sitting somewhere different and their wee darlings are jumping around seats and making a racket. I dont mind sitting next to older people. Have had a few really excellent discussions on buses and coaches. Everyone has a story to tell and give them the chance and they would happily chat.

Bus: I'll try to find a seat that is free, but will stand as the route the buses I get, there tend to be more elderly folk who probably need the seat more than me. If it is a double decker, I will usually go upstairs as there are plenty of seats.

Train: I aim to find a seat facing the direction it is going in and will stand for a long period of time as it is usually more combfortable than sitting in a seat and feel like I am being squeezed.

One pet peeve I have is if you find a seat when the train or bus is crowded. Fair enough, but if seats empty up ie 3/4 of the train empties, grab an empty seat. No need to cause the other person feel uneasy.

On aeroplanes I always get a seat at the back. You never hear of them reversing into mountains.

Extreme pain? I think not, a bit of discomfort for a short period granted, I am 5'7 and with my boots/shoes on I am 5'11 on an average day...if I can do it, why can't a man?

The only time i ever get on a bus is the shuttle from the airport to the off site parking. I did get a proper bus about 20 years ago and i reckon it would have been quicker if i'd taken a brisk walk!

I'll happily sit where there's a space regardless of who I'll be next to but I do take great delight in finding someone who's hogging the vacant seat with their bags etc and asking them to move them so that I may sit there . I quite like to make conversation with people on public transport too - I hear all sorts of weird and wonderful stories.

The fact is if the space is 20 inches and your legs are 25 inches when your sitting down something has to give. I'm just short of 6'2 and I can barely fit in any seats. You can't just squeeze your legs in, they are made of bone and last time I checked bone wasn't flexible. The only way is to sit with your legs open.

You do realize that wearing heels has no effect on your your actual height when you are sitting down. The part of your body that has to fit in the extremely small space is your thigh bone. You putting your heels on has no effect on the length of your thigh bone. Seriously, seems like your just trying to have a dig at men.

Do you think they use your type of logic on building sites? " hey this piece of steel here is 5 inches too long, what should I do? Oh just squeeze it in. Honestly your thinking it pretty moronic.

^^^ flatterer...try and keep the personal comments out of it please, address the post not the poster

If some people are too tall to sit down maybe standing for a while until there is more room could help? My son is 6'4, he manages without encroaching on the person next to him, albeit uncomfortable, and the newspaper business? No need for that, not all men do it, but many do.

I dont address that point to women as I haven't seen a woman do those things on a train.

I am happy to agree to differ, that's what forums are for, putting forward our own opinion.

So you have been on every single bus journey with your son and every time he rides the bus you check with him to see if he has encroached other peoples space?

The facts are you CANNOT fit something into a space to small for it, it's as simple as that. As you don't have this problem I find it extremely difficult to take you seriously as you really don't know what it's like.

Say the space from the back of one seat to the next is 25 inches and you had a piece of wood that was 32 inches, How would you fit this in behind the seat? The only possible way is to put it at an angle ( just like taller men have to put their legs at an angle )

You say you are happy to agree to differ but there is no argument here, you are simply wrong.

I agree people can't fit into a sit that is too small for them. As for me if there are other seats for people to sit in I look grumpy and hope people won't sit by me usually works.

yes, i do it sometimes coz im 6ft3 and my legs dont fit in between seats. So, this results in a little less room fr the person sitting next to me lol

i dont mind sitting any where in the bus but since i take bus for shorter distance, and if im not v tired, i prefer to stand

I've been on about five bus rides in the last forty years, and that, as far as I am concerned was seven too many - public transport gives me the horrors - it's too much like cattle trucks on wheels.
A family relative was in the Aldgate massacre, so I tend to give any mention of trains a very wide berth.

I've learned never to sit in front of children as they seem to have an obsession with touching my hair. Apart from that I'm not fussed and sit anywhere.

Don't do trains or buses but every time I have they haven't been busy but I don't think people have a preference with regards age and gender but what seems the most hospitable and bearable. Hygiene, are they reading a book. earphones in - chatting, being noisy - quiet, how accessible is the seat. You'll make a 100 calculations in your head on many factors and prejudices and decide on what is the easiest and most tolerable path - for me that is the car.

I generally sit on my own on public transport, but being an idiot magnet I invariably end up with some nutjob taking the seat next to mine.

Always get the wee smelling, musty clothes ones stumble over. So i have to push myself against the window pane, making myself seem interested in scummy buildings and scallies as the bus travels wearily along.

Its weird when i spot a cute male thing, do i sit next too or move along. Almost feel too deliberate if i sit next too and turning a crimson shade not seen on a 38 year old woman for a long time.

Otherwise i busily look at things on my phone or read something , anything to deter from unwillingly inviting weirdos to sit next to me and talk rather loudly , about any old crap.
