"Jobless rate falls to lowest since Obama took office"Page 1 of 1
I can't help but wonder if perhaps this is somehow connected to Romney and Gingrich's heavy Primary spending.

It would be hilarious if the GOP accidentally caused the Obama administration to look good, because they insisted on spending wildly to try to convince everyone that it was leading us all down the tubes.

It matters not if jobless rate goes down or further up. The GOD need to white knight if they want to get in the white house because neither Romney or Gingrich is capable of being Obama in the next election. They both have major obstacles they have to over come before being electable.

Or could it be the jobless rate is falling due to the long-term unemployed no longer collecting benefits...a major way to tally the unemployment rate?!?

I live in NYC...about 3 weeks ago, I posted an open position for an Administrative Assistant. I have a corporate position at a fashion company. Since we do not have a "true human resources department" and since the chosen candidate would be reporting to me, I was the one receiving all of the resumes.

So far, I've received 2,000 resumes. The way I wrote the job description and requirements, I made it absolutely clear this was an entry-level position for a recent college grad who came from a creative background. I have received resumes from men and women with advanced degrees and senior management and even VP titles...who had not worked for a couple of years...or people with degrees and a good amount of progressive experience...yet after the market crashing, you will see huge gaps of employment and/or temp jobs on their resumes. I even received resumes from people with finance and accounting degrees with 10-20 years experience at well known corporations...

I have several friends and former colleagues who previously made in the $90K-125K range for YEARS...and they earned every penny of it...after losing their jobs and finally finding employment after being out for a year or more, they are making a lot less...because companies can have their "pick" and can look a candidate in the face and offer $50K-65K to these same people....and give them the type of responsibility as if they are making six-figure range!

I've also seen an article saying spending has improved, but consumers are still cautious ones. Don't get me wrong, things aren't as bad as they were a few years ago, yet it still is NOT good, at least IMO...

Sorry, I saw it in several places, so I ASSUMED it was general news. Here's one:

I actually thought of posting this in the humor section, since I think it's more funny than anything else, but it really does belong here.

Am I reading this right, that the jobless rate didn't actually fall, there are just fewer NEW unemployed people than there were last month?

Also,

It matters not if jobless rate goes down or further up. The GOD need to white knight if they want to get in the white house because neither Romney or Gingrich is capable of being Obama in the next election.

Can someone translate this to English?

I suspect he meant "G.O.P." needed A white knight. It still makes no sense, though, since Newt and Romney are the only shot the GOP has right now.

Reagan won his first term largely because the economy was in the tank. The measures he brought in made things worse and the economy did even worse. Largely because the Baby Boomers were getting married and having kids, the economy had a consumer lead recovery. So by 1984, things had gotten back up to being only as bad as they were in 1980. But the economy was going in the right direction, so he won a landslide.

It's all about the right direction/wrong direction thing.

But these accounting methods were introduced by the current President's predecessors. Nothing in the way the unemployed is counted has changed during his administration (and don't even get me started on how inflation is calculated). The point is that, while things are undoubtedly worse than we're told, they are improving. The economy is going in the right direction.

I don't understand how this is quantified if, as has been demonstrated, the numbers produced do not (and cannot) demonstrate this. If unemployment claims are falling off because people have been jobless so long they are falling off the back end of the count, that doesn't sound like things are getting better. Kind of the opposite.

I agree with your thoughts, dej. The trouble, as I see it, from an accounting perspective, is that you can't count people who have stopped looking for work.

All that can be counted, are people who have applied for jobless benefits, or had them extended, or who have continued applying for work. As much as I too would love to see a real number, based on what's really happening, I don't see how this could be done, without another large invasion of everyone's personal lives be legalized.

I actually count it a good bit of honest reporting, that when the numbers are announced, the people doing so usually do mention that they do not include those who have given up.

I will agree with that. I don't think that the current administration is trying to deceive about the unemployment situation in the country.

I could swear that is the same thing the President said when he commented on the last unemployment report.

A lot of people fall of the unemployment insurance rolls after they exhaust the benefits. (This has been happening for a long time. Unemployed people don't collect Unemployment Insurance for the rest of their lives after they lose a job. There is a cut-off, and there has always been one.) They are mostly the older workers who aren't offered new positions by the employers because they prefer to employ younger, healthier, less experienced workers in order to save in labor costs and maximize profits. The older people after Unemployemnt Insurance benefits run out usually retire and start collecting Social Security and/or beging to draw from their pension funds, if they have any. There is nothing new about this, so the figures you are reading now would compare without distortion to the figures from years past.
