| The Official Black Metal and Why It Is Awesome Thread Posted: 2/23/2012 11:42:46 PM | Black Metal is easily my favorite genre..
Immortal is a huge favorite of course.... but the 2 live bands that made me ditch my grindcore band to form a black metal band were Watain and Horna..absolutely amazing live!
Stuff I am currently listening to a lot: Woods of Desolation (depressive/suicidal black metal from Australia) Deafheaven (early screamo/shoegaze/ambient/black metal mix from San Francisco, CA) Inquisition (a 2 piece raw black metal band from Everett, Wa) Wodensthrone (UK keyboard laden atmospheric black) Wolfsschrei ( German depressive/suicidal black) Alcest (French shoegaze/black metal mix) Agalloch (mix of folk/doom/black metal from Portland, Or) Odal (raw melodic black metal from Germany) Austere (depressive/suicidal black metal from Australia) Drudkh (atmospheric black metal from Ukraine) Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult (female fronted raw black from Germany) Addaura (cascadian black metal from Seattle, Wa) Withered (sludgey black metal from Atlanta, GA) Absu (thrashy occult black metal from Texas) Alda (cascadian black metal from Tacoma, Wa)
And finally some shameless self promotion, my band, Sacrament Ov Impurity http://www.reverbnation.com/sacramentovimpurityband This is almost our entire 1st album. javascript:smilie(' ')

| The Official Black Metal and Why It Is Awesome Thread Posted: 2/24/2012 12:04:31 PM | Agreed a nice list Jo! There's only a couple I don't know on there, Wolfsschrei and Alda, which I will have to check out at some point. Have Withered jumped on the Black/Sludge train? I am sure they were more Deathy on the first album.
My favourite band of the last few years is Inquisition, I should've checked them out earlier but stupidly I ignored the hype. Such an awesome atmosphere for two guys, even live they manage to pull it off. I will always enjoy the second wave classics the most as they're the bands/albums I grew up with - Vikingligr Veldi, Filosofem, De Mysteriis, Transilvanian Hunger etc etc.
I dont have the time to go to the detail Jo did but here's a few more recent favourites:
Winterfylleth, Under That Spell, Ketzer, Nightbringer, Dodsferd, Avichi, Celeste, Teratism, Glorior Belli, Raate, Ruins, Thy Catafalque..

They single handedly killed any appeal I may have had to reexplore the genre. Any black metal I like is older, or is of the more polished variety.
Borknagar, Immortal and such.......occasionally some Darkthrone.
I also quite enjoy Rotting Christ, a band that I'd VERY loosely call bm.
And of course certain Bathory albums are untouchable!

I probably have a track or 2 from half these bands.
My favorites are King Diamond / Mercyful Fate, Old Man's Child (OMC? How Bizzare!)and Samael

| The Official Black Metal and Why It Is Awesome Thread Posted: 2/25/2012 7:42:18 AM | | Now I recollect that eventful day when around 1995 when a friend of mind kindly lent me one of those hidden gems released by Emperor. The album was "In the Nightside Eclipse" and that was a milestone to my personal path toward self-overcoming and knowledge. It open up new vistas and horizons along with certain authors/philosophers that strengthen my forma mentis. And the aftermath was more lethal when I stumbled upon Vikernes' intricate and deep compositions and my love towards the specific and cathartic arising from the depths of the Norwegian lands captured forever. I could carry on mentioning others like Enslaved and Darkthrone but I believe Burzum had the perfect expression of the Art that wanted to stir our dormant state of mind. To me it's more than noise, it's a manifestation of an artist's vision and inner revolt. | |

| The Official Black Metal and Why It Is Awesome Thread Posted: 2/25/2012 11:50:44 AM | Most of the music I like that has any linkage to black metal veers closest to the doom metal category. Therefore the below bands are bands I like that aren't black metal but probably wouldn't sound the same or possibly exist without black metal (Note: I've always been very progressive oriented, so its pretty normal for me to like bands that don't typically "fit" into a genre).
Agalloch - Their earlier works have a stronger black meets folk metal feeling. However, their last few full releases have had a strong doom metal feeling while still retaining a black and folk influence. They have a very layered and individualist sound, which I like. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agalloch
Katatonia - From the name design of their first few albums, they obviously took influence from black metal, though they stated in interviews they weren't (and rightfully so). Ofcourse, properly classified as Death/Doom until their 4th release, they can best be described (especially on their first release) as blending black metal, melodic death, and doom metal. Even in their later more alternative/gothic oriented albums, they managed to carry great emotive atmospheres. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katatonia
Extol - Their first two album especially! They were never actually trying to be black metal, but ironically were accepted by members of the black metal community despite being Christian. Very "genuine" sound and extremely individualistic. Even their latter materials that are more prog metal oriented still carry a very murky slow lush atmosphere, not to mention the painful peircing vocals on the blueprint dives. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extol
Wolves in the Throne Room - These guys are true environmentalists to the core, right down to ecological living off the land. Black Metal categorically probably suits these guys because they are very individualist, not adhering to any one philosophy (except perhaps on environmental matters). They are generally listed as ambient black metal, but I see their music as going beyond genre classifications. They have their own sound. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolves_in_the_Throne_Room
Just a personal note, I've never really been into the "satanic" black metal stuff. However, the more individualist side of black metal does interest me.

| The Official Black Metal and Why It Is Awesome Thread Posted: 2/26/2012 5:19:47 AM | | Satanism is pure Hollywood gibberish in the BM circles and beyond. But healthier spheres of that genre strive to integrate a certain link with the past, the ancient wisdom of our fathers and Wolves In the Throne room do not advocate nihilism, self-destruction and so on. Burzum is the same compared to Mayhem and such. | |

| The Official Black Metal and Why It Is Awesome Thread Posted: 2/26/2012 10:28:53 PM | I saw Wolves in the Throne Room back in 2007... was in awe watching them live! Definetly an underrated American band.
Excellent list of bands guys. Agalloch are one of my favs listed above. I can't believe I missed their visit to TX :/

| The Official Black Metal and Why It Is Awesome Thread Posted: 2/28/2012 9:43:31 AM | | I am into current black metal so passionately but Wolves in the Throne Room are a band I would love to see live as they can really advocate a true spiritual stance in their intricate music. | |

| The Official Black Metal and Why It Is Awesome Thread Posted: 2/29/2012 12:23:35 PM | I wasn't overly impressed to be honest, perhaps my estimations were too high.
The best USBM bands I've seen live were Absu and Inquisition, although thinking about it I've not seen many more others.
Anyone got some good gigs/festivals coming up? I'm going to see some great bands over the next 6 months!

| The Official Black Metal and Why It Is Awesome Thread Posted: 3/8/2012 9:31:19 AM | Wow...I have never even heard of this genre....but since I love moody, dark, ethereal, heavy, emotional, angry-at-time music, I am now checking it out.
Listening to Deafheaven right this minute....thinkin' I might like it.
I don't know bout you guys but hearing such music helps address, nurture and heal the very pits of tormented, sad, bloody, wounded fxxked up parts of me inside that don't know what else to do with themselves. Since it ain't legal to go hurt the ones who hurt me.
To think...I was utilizing Doors, Sabbath, and Moody Blues to help me but now I have some new resources.
