Free Trip to Rome! Any Advice?Page 1 of 1
Hi there!

My sister who is a Travel Agent has informed me she won a Free trip to Rome and has invited me to go with her. A fun sister trip. We are both single and looking very forward to going in September of this year..

I was wondering if anyone has advice on Hotels to stay in while in Rome as well as affordable Villas in Tuscany? Wineries? We want to spend out time travelling around Italy as much as possible so any other cities you recommend would be appreciated as well.

The free part of the trip is the airfare there and back as well as passes to certain tourist spots.

Also if any wonderful spots that we should go to that we may not be aware of. Those little out of the way places that aren't advertised.

Ciao!

Yes - don't drink too much wine and gaze into the eyes of handsome and charming Italian men unless you've packed plenty of condoms !

I wish you a wonderful trip. x

Well, I'm very flattered by that. I too have learnt much about myself from the forums and long may that continue.

It's been a long time since I was in Rome - or any other part of Italy for that matter - but you will enjoy it. You seem to have a friendly disposition so I would recommend mixing with the locals and making an effort to communicate with them and learn from them. Simply being open. Wherever my travels have taken me, I have found the off-the-beaten track experience of being open and friendly to other cultures has rewarded me greatly with their acceptance and welcome.

I've been lucky enough to travel much of Europe as it's very accessible from the UK and an easy destination for a long weekend. In taking the approach outlined above, I've been fortunate to have been invited to many family meals, celebrations and festivities which I truly believe would not have been opportunities which would have presented themselves to those more wary. Just be smart about your safety. :-)

Take lots of money!!! A friend and I went to Italy about 3 years ago. While visiting Rome somehow I was persuaded by the most gorgeous (young) Italian to purchase the most stunning leather jacket (which of course he told me I looked stunning in). So $400 later, and over dinner that night, our conversation was, "How did that happen?" Her reply was, "He was so cute, and at our age it is not often we get such a hunk zipping us into soft, fitted leather jackets!"

It was worth every penny! We laugh about it often, and each time I wear the jacket, it brings back fun memories.

One snippet of advice would be: Get a good guide to go to the Vatican and other tourist attractions in Rome, it truly is worth it. They can zip you through and take you to the highlights. It gets really crowded, and hard to navigate without a good guide.

One of my most favorite places (if you plan on traveling) was the Isle of Capri off the coast of Naples... So beautiful and serene.

Have fun, and be safe. Even beautiful cities have lots of crime especially for tourists.

azul14: Get a Tour Guide and go To the Isle of Capri..Got it..;)

We are looking forward to staying in a Villa in Tuscany. A dream of ours..to tour wineries and bicycle around the countryside with those old fashioned bikes with the big wicker basket on the front.

Thank you for the advice so far...I hope this thread doesn't get lost and forgotten as I look forward the advice! Very Helpful already..;)

This is something I wrote months ago, Cinnamon.

Tuscany

We sit in a field of beautiful wildflowers enjoying our picnic lunch. The cool, crisp, spring weather has been idyllic for our bicycle tour of the Tuscany countryside. Sunflowers and Poppies are everywhere! The photographic opportunities are endless! I put the camera on a tripod and set the timer to get some beautiful shots of my love and I amid the natural splendor enveloping us. The sun is beginning to set and we will return soon to the cozy Italian villa to swim in the pool and soak in the hottub. Tomorrow, we may take a train to Florence or go explore the smaller towns nearby. Renting Vespa scooters might be fun..or a BMW motorcycle....my sweetheart's arms wrapped around me as we make our way to Italy's east coast!

Enjoy your trip, watch your money, and maybe put some padding in your pants to protect you from all of the pinches...LOL

The sunflowers in the fields in Tuscany and Florence go on for miles and miles, truly beautiful.

It sounds like you are going to have a wonderful trip. Riding around on a bike with your picnic basket, I envy you that. Wine, bread, and some great cheese... Perfect!!!

I just read an article about women traveling alone. One suggestion is to wear a wedding ring to ward off unwanted advances and keep a photo of your "husband" in your wallet. That may spoil your fun, though!

The article is here, if you are interested:

I recommend looking up Wikitravel, which will detail things to do, see, eat, drink, sleep, etc. It has given me a lot of helpful information on trips I take. Enjoy your trip to Roma!

Yes, Springsdiver they are beautiful, but a handful. It is a constant battle letting them know it is my house and they are they need to treat it gentle... at 85 lbs each they can play a little rough!

I took my Daughter and her friend to Italy a couple of summers, if you do not have much time I would advise taking some tours. We used Viator, and thought they were excellent. Very knowledgeable guides and very useful to get the lay of the land.

Have fun.

IMO Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Although- seeing as I have not visited all the cities in the world that is a bit of a silly claim. But as you will be in Tuscany anyway.... don't miss out. It is gorgeous. Also visit Arezzo (I think!!! It was ages ago that I went there) which is the birth place of Dante, of Inferno fame. It is a medieval town and the architecture is stunning. I have been to Italy a few times- when I was 16 I was pick-pocketed right outside the Vatican!!! So hold on to your handbag. Capri is definitely worth a visit, but Naples can be a bit cut-throat so beware! If you head down that way, visit Pompeii. It is very moving. Venice is amazing of course, but a bit smelly in hot weather!!

Hope you have a blast!!

Edited to add... Down south is an area called Puglia. Google the area and look at the little round houses called trulli. I have not stayed in one but my parents have and raved about it.

Have as much fun as you possibly can. If you into the arts. The monuments, cathedrals, and museums will be something definitely to see. Since you going that for, Monte Carlo is something to see for sure. There's the famous Casino Royal and The Imperial Palace where Princess Grace is buried. There also a really beautiful outdoor flower gardens to walk through, a aquarium, and you can watch the Royal Guards march. Plus lots good shopping. Everything from average to extremely expensive.

Don't rent a car! The transit system and taxis are enough.
Ask the locals where they eat, there you will find better food. If you walk up and the menu is posted outside in English, it is a tourist trap, walk away...
Try the street food when you just want a snack.

Hey there! Right I went back in december 2007 so my advice is a little dated but firstly :

Colosseum! You HAVE to see this place, absolutely breathtaking - get there at 8am sharp to beat the crowds and have the sun beaming down over a deserted and beautiful arena. Avoid the conmen in roman legion attire outside...

Go for a wander at night - it's a beautiful and charming city with lots hidden, my favourite little touch was right outside the goverment agriculture office there are orange trees growing out of the pavement, really nice touch that.

The food there is shocking at times, if you have a smartphone - get TripAdvisor loaded onto it before you go for a good idea of where to eat, and be on the lookout for con artists!
