| | What's the best method to dehydrate blueberries Page 1 of 1 | Has anyone dehydrated blueberries, I want to make this recipe and dehydrate the blueberries myself for it and I was just wondering the best way to do it without taking little nutrients from them, I've read about dropping them in boiling water for about 1-2 minutes than in cold water to stop the cooking or instead just cut them in half and than place on dehydrator?

this recipe looks good. I'm going to it with dried cranberries since I have some, instead of dried blueberries.

You could cut them in half and dehydrate them, or you can do it whole as well but they will take longer...

But, when I dehydrate any type of berry like blueberries, cranberries and even grapes....I poke each one with a knife or it will literally take days to dehydrate them.

| What's the best method to dehydrate blueberries Posted: 3/11/2012 2:44:03 PM | It sure takes a long time to dehydrate blueberries when you don't drop them in boiling water first for 2-3 minutes, I did grapes once took 4 days but gee they were good. Anyways couldn't wait for my blueberries so I went and purchased a few to make this recipe and I must say it's a sure winner, will be even better next time I make them when I use my dehydrated blueberries. So if your in a hurry to make them it's best to do the boil method first, I chose not too. | |

| What's the best method to dehydrate blueberries Posted: 3/11/2012 6:21:01 PM | It's best to blanch (add to boiled water for 2-3 minutes then add it to ice water) all fruits before dehydrating them, in fact adding a little lemon juice to the boiling water also helps preserve from turning brown during the process. Next time you get out the trays to dehydrate try thick slices of mangoes this way, blanch in a little lemon juice then pat down with a paper towel and add a little sugar then dehydrate for 12-24 hours just under the normal amount so it's still a little tender and moist inside. It really intensifies the flavor and there's no comparing homemade to store bought dry mangoes which many times have a funny taste. | |

| What's the best method to dehydrate blueberries Posted: 3/12/2012 4:12:41 PM | | I disagree I don't think fruit is best to blanch first unless you want it to dry faster than by all means do so, also only fruit with tough skins work with this method I wouldn't dare trying it with any that wasn't, as for adding sugar "really", I don't think I've ever had a mango that wasn't sweet enough on it's own, besides the whole point of myself dehydrating fruit is to avoid that extra sugar and whatever else they might add to it in the stores, but I'm sure to try mango | |

Preferably wild blueberries as they contain less juice. (side note: I picked 24 L of blueberries last fall....eat them every morning!)
