Literacy? Page 1 of 6    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
How much does this matter to you when it comes to replying to a message.....

IE:

'wow i love what i red i would truly love to get to know you you really sound incredable
im new to this sight sorry i dont have a pic yet but its coming soon lol i hope to hear
from you'

A-----The profile matches 90% of what you are seeking

B-----No photos as yet......BUT........see 'A'

C------ Not enough education to make it worth your time.....

Do you pass on this one, or wait it out and see what the pudding has to offer???

I couldn't get past it in terms of developing a LTR, but if she looked like Kate Upton I'd make an exception... and some beautiful babies.

Yeah, that's tough. I'd maybe tell him I didn't understand what he was saying and ask him to clean it up and try again?

I feel people should at least have a reading, writing and speaking level of grade 6 - with all the college degrees I see in profiles, that's being really generous. If they don't even have that I'll probably pass.

I'd give her a chance, I think... some people are reasonably intelligent but just aren't good at grammar.

Related thought... I'm always amazed at the profiles that state the person has a bachelors degree (or higher) and yet they appear to be virtually illiterate. Obviously they didn't major in English!

I would consider to meet as that person could be rushed, bad eyesight, or any number of things...

before meeting I would talk on the phone with them before saying yes or no.. in 20 minutes or less I would know if I wanted to do a meet and greet....

in this 90 percent match for me........on his occupation might be MD, they often are crappy spellers and why they scribble.............
so I would not put too much into some typos.

Excellent spelling, and ability to write, does not make a good person, does not make a person with a good stable job either. (porn writers are good spellers.. lol)

I met someone who wrote a book, some historical issue about someone...
they could not spell either...
so I would consider to meet if it were a 90 percent match, long as his financials were in order as there were no glaring issues after phone call to assess and interview him for a meet and greet.

Where would the 10 percent "not" matched be? too short? too fat? little kids at home? smoker? ...... all bad.
bottom line is a few typos do not matter. Esp when it comes to this site, there is no spell check option.

The LOL alone triggers my gag reflex, yet I know some really smart people who sprinkle it everywhere.
Same with bad spelling.
So I'd reply. Small risk, no commitment.

I'd bet real money that the author of that message doesn't even come close to 90% of what I'm seeking.

No photos? Pass. I don't like surprises.

Not enough education? Maybe. It could also mean she's too lazy to think about spelling, punctuation, and capitalizaion, or that she's glued to her cellphone and texted the message on it. In any of these cases--not interested.

Are there browsers that don't have built in spell check nowadays? Firefox, Chrome, IE, Android, and iOS do... what are they using potatoes hooked up to Zack Morris' cell phone?

Idk, my general reaction is "this person's personal library probably consists of six month old Us Weekly's and the Twilight series".

I'm a proud member of the grammar and literacy nazi group on here. I cannot tolerate butchery of the English language. Unfortunately, I get messages like this from people professing to have a masters degree. In that case, I think they're just lazy. Another thing I can't tolerate. I'd probably have to pass, especially without a picture (because I'm also that shallow).

Ive been in situations like what you've described and Ive had mixed results so to speak, Ive taken the chance and met a few and a few surprised me and a few disappointed me.

I think its up to the individual and if you are willing to take a risk, remember nothing venture nothing game, Calculated risk is one thing stupid risk is another.

Even though the person is lazy or appears lazy in the writing I would wait for other emails and maybe read the profile and if the profile appears well written ( but then again someone could of written it for them, Ive written profiles for a few that requested help) I would wait for the emails and see how they write and if it appears they are fibbing in the profile I will cut them off.

OP it seems to me that you have been recieving messages from those who like to text. There are a couple of threads on texting that you might want to read for insight on this.

Chronic texters seem to feel that spelling and grammar are unimportant and some would argue that this is the new way of communicating "so get with the times"... as Darth said below this could be

" like a tiny social ejaculation"

messing up your inbox.

I rarely reply to those without photo's expecially if the person seems to have difficulty in putting together a coherent message... drunken texting not cute! IMO

Personally I do not filter based on education - just because someone did not attend college or university it does not mean that they are less intelligent than someone who did.

And if you find mistakes in this message - I do not use spell check.

i din't know we were being graded LOL wow! ur really jugemental

Thanks for the wonderful example

Do you pass on this one, or wait it out and see what the pudding has to offer???

IME people are more and more impatient.
If they see a profile or picture they like they have this sense of urgency to respond now now now now now! If they don't then they lose their chance, they lose the potential for immediate gratification.

So they go to the blank email thing, type as fast as they can, and send it off.
Like a tiny social ejaculation.

So personally, I wouldn't pass on it (if their profile is representative of someone I would email), and I wouldn't really see them as pudding.
I might respond and see if they'd calm down with a conversation, or see if they are responding from a phone so their texting/swyping skills suck.
And then reassess from the second email.

Poor spelling is a pet peeve of mine. I cannot communicate with people that write in text-speak. Reeks of junk mail or email blasts to 100 possible matches.

That is truly pathetic. I won't think too much about someone taking a few shortcuts when sending messages if it is obvious they are capable of much better. When someone sends a message like this, it makes me cringe. I would most likely pass.

WIP - tell him I didn't understand what he was saying and ask him to clean it up and try again?

I can just picture WIP with a red (cyber) pencil noting all of the errors, and then sending it back! hehheh

A good speller, and reader is always pleasant. However, I have to have an open mind to those not so literate.

That looks like a Copy/Paste message if I ever saw one. Unlike girls who may have a legit reason for not showing pics, I think it's more sketchy when a guy doesn't.

For me proper english, grammar, spelling = Class. Anything less including text speak makes me question their relative IQ as well. I wish people would stop proving me right about these things.

I agree with seven15.

There may be an even a more important variable. The writer comes across as having poor social judgement. One wants a relationship with an individual who knows 'when' to put a particular image forward. I like to wear jeans, sneakers and a T-shirt at times but this is not the image I would present to a woman on a date or when going for a job interview. Most socially adept individuals know how to put forward an image to maximize their opportunities in life.

The very fact that the OP is asking this question indicates that the writer did not make a positive impression. The issue is that he 'doesn't get it' that he didn't make a positive impression. This indicates lack of basic social skills.

Oh Gawd...if a few spelling errors will cause someone to not reply, then there is no hope for anyone.

Doctors and lawyers make spelling errors too ya know. Cripes, I couldnt read any of my doctors notes if my life depended on it, and they are educated up the ying yang. Me thinks many here are just looking for reasons not to actually leave the house. I know so many people who flub the written word, and speak elequently in person or on the phone. You understood what she was saying just fine and are just being anal retentive in my opinion.

I wholeheartedly agree w/ Sciencetreker.

I have a great love for the English (or really any language that I know anything about), and care about how people use language.

However, more importantly, if I receive a message like the one quoted in the OP I feel that it can basically be interpreted in one of two ways.

1. Here is a person who does not care whether he puts his best foot forward or not, which does not bode well for a future relationship with him, or
2. Here is a person who does not realize that he is not putting his best foot forward, which does not . . . you guessed it, same outcome.

Yep, this is really it for me - the lack of interest in wanting to make a good impression overall. For years there have been people who weren't the best spellers, writers, speakers or readers - but there was a time when those people used to wish they were better at it and if they weren't trying to improve it secretly, they were at least trying to fake it. Those days are gone. Now it's everyone else's problem if they don't overlook it. Pffft.

ooooOOOoooo....Anal retentive.....

We all make spelling and grammatical errors, and that is not the issue with me, but much more so, how consistent one is with those errors as compared to ones education and/or profession.

How one presents themselves in writing, and with speech can and will make a huge difference in understanding and accepting that person in many ways. I expect to be treated the way I treat others, and if I can take the time to try to present myself properly with writing and speaking, I expect the same from those I am interested in, or they me.

How confusing it can be when one claims to have a college education and above, and they can not put a decent sentence or paragraph together when getting to know another. Just as I do when I review Resumes', if not even close to where they should be for the education and job requirement, so is it with those that want to get to know me personally, and if not acceptable, they are eliminated.

cd......

For email or any form of mail response I expect a certain level of grammar. I once was a terrific speller and went through all those fancy advanced english studies but, now, I still need to google how to spell words.

I do understand it is the day of text messages and that, in itself, has it's own unique language and lingo. I believe that such messages should stay within their means (technology).

When you are given space to write I believe we should use it to write correctly, or as best as possible. We don't approach people in public and open conversations with "LOL UR PURDY" so why treat a semi-formal message/email any different?

no question here. you've already judged this person unworthy.

C------ Not enough education to make it worth your time.....

so the point of this thread lies elsewhere. the joy of complaining, my guess.
