| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 3/25/2012 7:41:23 AM | read the directions how to cook it.... add it to things you would normally add rice to... or eat it alone with butter or whatever seasonsings you like. Start with making some plain...........
make enough to last a few days... eat with beans, or meat... make rice pudding with it or anything you like based on what your tatses are. Its just basically rice. That is how you use it.

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 3/25/2012 8:37:07 AM | You can make a really nice creamy soup with it.
I boil some rice, celery, onion and chicken together until the rice starts to break down. Add some chopped carrots, lots and lots of sage, some coriander, thyme, salt, pepper boil longer. When the mixture looks porridgeish, add lots of broccoli. cook for 3 minutes. pour in blender and add some milk. the mixture will turn a lovely shade of green . A lot of people cook the brocolli for longer but I love the fresh taste that the undercooked broccoli gives the soup. The soup is so hearty I eat it as a stand alone meal.
I make this soup for my four year old nephew all the time and he loves it with some of those cheesy goldfish crackers in it.
Another nice thing to make with basmati rice is the afghan style rice. I think it's call qabali? but it's a sweet rice dish and it's flavored with spices that taste like maybe cinnamon, clove, pepper, cardamom, cumin and saffron and it's cooked with yellow raisins and carrots. (I don't know the spices for sure, that's just what it tastes like maybe it has, you'd have to look up the recipe to know for sure) It's an AMAZING dish and I'm pretty sure it uses basmati rice. I don't know the recipe, but if I had 25pounds of free basmati rice, I'd be googling "Afghan rice recipe" Also, if you're on a budget, I'm sure you can leave out the saffron.. You could probably leave out the cardamom too if you can't find a cheap source.

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 3/25/2012 8:49:08 AM | | I buy a couple of bags that size a year. My family loves rice. We eat it as a side dish to a lot of meals, and I always make extra so I can have fried rice the next day. It can be used to stretch out soups and stews as well. | |

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 3/25/2012 9:30:51 AM | it has a kind of floral smell and taste to it so be sure that whatever you use it in will go well with it...it is NOT a substitute for plain white rice... google is your friend | |

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 3/25/2012 4:44:30 PM | I absolutely adore basamati rice and only ever buy the short grain when I'm making dolmeh - Mediterranean stuffed grape leaves. One of my favourite dishes is basamati rice, prepared and then fried with butter, peas, worchestershire sauce and fresh ground pepper. My brother on the other hand fries it with butter, creamed corn and ground pepper. Both very cheap and easy meals.
I normally make the rice to go with wot (Ethiopian stew) or with Indian dishes such as buttered chicken or korma. I find the fragrant with the savoury or spicy is a very nice blend.

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 3/25/2012 8:57:34 PM | | I usually buy rice in #25 bags, I like rice, plain, mixed with red, black, or brown rice, couscous, or quinoa, spanish rice, fried rice, any number of spices to add flavor. Even with butter, milk and a little brown sugar....It keeps easily a year or more | |

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 3/27/2012 2:46:33 PM | If you can't find a use for all that basmati, send it my way, OP! I can't find a larger bag than 2lbs to save my life here, not even at our Asian specialty store up the street...and I use basmati a LOT.
Like Lint Spotter, I make basmati to accompany a lot of East Indian dishes as well; the butter chicken she mentioned, chicken biryani, tikka masala and last night I made beef vindaloo accompanied with basmati and naan bread. You're going to have to like both curry and spice for those dishes, though, although you can tone them down or heat them up to suit your personal taste.
Another dish I do with basmati is Egyptian Kusheri...there are plenty of recipes online. It's a rice, lentil and noodle dish, and you'll find many of the recipes online call for macaroni noodles. I didn't want that much noodle in the dish so I've always used fine egg noodles instead. Very tasty.

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 3/27/2012 6:33:14 PM | | thanks for all the great ideas and recipes for the rice. ive been busy googling recipes whenever i can. i was thinking we should have a basmati rice party here in my building and everyone bring their favorite recipes. what a blast that would be to meet each other and share a meal. one more stupid question. can i make the rice in my krups rice cooker. there was not any mention of it in their instruction book. i guess i could try and see if they have a web site to ask. anyone have one that they use for this rice. judi | |

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 3/28/2012 1:33:25 AM | MsMicki beat me to the rice pudding; mine has a slight variation in some measurements though... 1 1/2 cups cooked rice, 2 cups milk, 2 eggs, 2/3 c sugar.
Stuffed peppers, cabbage, or else prickly meatballs are other options that could use cooked rice. I would use it just about anywhere I used white rice really.
I often put some boullion powder in with the water when cooking rice; for a different taste. Sometimes sauteed onions, garlic, mushrooms, or whatever; mixed in right at the end of cooking.

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 4/4/2012 12:29:59 PM | | I think you should make stir fried rice. Boil off 2 cupfuls, when cooked drain thoroughly and fridge, preferably do this the night before and its quicker and better to use when its been chilled. Fry off 2 small onions finely diced and a diced red pepper, grate in a clove of garlic and 1/2 inch ginger, throw in a tablespoon of sweet soya sauce and 2 tablespoons of sweet chilli sauce if you like it spicy you could add 1/4 very finely chopped bonnet pepper (no pips they are lethal), frozen peas (cupful), 1/2 tin of drained sweetcorn and your cold rise mix around until heated and serve its fab with cooked seasoned chicken pieces too - one pot cooking cant beat it lol - enjoy. | |

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 4/9/2012 11:13:38 AM | Here are some fast, economical and tasty receipes using rice.
CABBAGE AND RICE 1 cup cabbage chopped in bite size pieces, 1 carrot sliced 1/4 cup rice 2-3 chopped tomatoes, or 1/2 can diced, or 1/4 can crushed tomatoes 1 large onion diced 2-3 cloves garlic diced 1 tsp sugar 2-3 tablespoons olive oil 1 cups water Salt, Pepper and Oregano to taste
Combined and saute the onions and garlic in the olive oil until translucent, and add the tomatoes and cabbage, Saute for 5 min more. Add a cup of water, the rice and season to taste. Bring to a boil and then turn down to low and cover until rice is cooked. It shouldn't be a dry dish, it should be on the saucey side.
You can also substitute SPINACH instead of the Cabbage and leave out the carrot for SPINACH AND RICE.
STIR FRIES using left over meats and any vegetables in the fridge,(onions carrots zucchini, celery, peppers, etc.) chopped and sauted to heat, add a dash of soya sauce, over rice are delicious.
SOUPS... Chop vegetables, add any left over meats, chop a tomato or use canned tomatoes, add water, and a hand full or two of rice, season to taste.

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 4/10/2012 12:45:06 PM | I kind of doubt the OP is still around since her last post was in March.......but a rice cooker is my MOST favorite kitchen item! And yes, OP!! Your rice cooker can cook the rice you've just received!
Why wouldn't it? It's a fricking RICE cooker!! It might be confusing if the instruction booklet doesn't SPECIFICALLY name the type of rice you're talking about............the best rule of thumb I've learned is two cups of water (or broth) to one cup of rice.....I've used this method for many types of rice....basmatti, white, brown, wild, jasmine..............it works every time!!
Good luck!! | |

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 4/10/2012 1:21:47 PM | | thank you for the advice. i had googled basamati rice and rice cookers and put together that it was ok to use this rice cooker. it has the ability to do soups, stews, beans, steam veg over the rice and oatmeal so it is becoming my favorite piece of kitchen equipment too. now i have to decide on which kitchen aid mixer i want cause i keep seeing these horror reports on plastic housing instead of metal gears. | |

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 4/22/2012 3:06:29 PM | I really like this Indian style rice pudding with saffron and cardamon.
2 qt. whole milk 3/4 cup jasmine or basmati rice 1 cup sugar 6 green cardamon pods, slightly crushed 1/4 tsp. crumbled saffron threads 1/2 cup golden raisins
Put milk, rice, sugar, cardamon, and saffron in a pot. Bring to simmer and simmer without the lid on until rice is fully cooked, at least an hour. Might want to cook longer. You want it to lose some volume. It will be soupy but thicken a little as it cools. Stir frequently. Add raisins. Chill.
This is a soupy, Indian style rice pudding. It's easy and delicious.

| help i just was gifted with 25lb of basamati rice Posted: 4/24/2012 3:27:13 AM | A really good idea is to cook lots of rice and freeze it.
Cook, let it cool, and portion in to whatever size containers you think you'll use, freeze! When you want to whip up a quick dinner.........your rice just has to be heated!
