Asthma- Can it develope at any age?Page 1 of 1
I have a son, just turned 18 last month. He's been running track, playing football very active throughout his school life. This is Track season, so they are preety much far into the meets.
Earlier this week my son ran two races, High hurdels, relay hurdles, nothing long distance. His last race, he had a hard time catching his breath, and his girlfriend came over to give him her inhaler...he said it helped.

He has a doctor appointment next Tuesday, but I was wondering if anyone can develope asthma at any age of life? Of course I've known for kids to develope at a younger age, but does it happen later in life?

He also had a meet today, said that he was fine and not as bad. Also, when he came home the other night, I could tell that his voice sounded different.
Anyone know about this?

I see new patients come into the Pharmacy at all ages, with this being * new *. It also may be something else, so I am glad he is seeing a Doctor. It might be more common in younger people, but these days anyone can get anything it seems. Hope he is okay and I would suggest keeping him from any major physical stuff until he is properly diagnosed. Good luck. :)

He can have exercised induced asthma. Most likely it was always there but the kinds of activities he now does shows it more. The fact that an inhaler makes him feel better is also a flag that he has it. Family members have this. Luckily it seems he only has a mild case of asthma which is good.

Yes
What could have happened though op (and that depends on your area), is we had a strange/early spring and he could have had very slight allergies to things that usually bloom at different times. But they went BAM and everything bloomed at once.

It was a snOtty/wheezy 2 weeks around here..

The athletics outside and him breathing through his mouth would also be a factor.
PLEASE>>>>>>>>>Don't use others peoples inhalers EVER!!!

I had a friend at cheer leading camp drop dead from that many years ago.
Heart attack.

Give him coffee and some quercetin and bromelain capsules on an empty stomach.
He needs to slow down outdoors until the doctor sees him..

Sub-lingual DMG is also a natural safe alternative for getting oxygen to the lungs.

Careful
No sugar or sodas.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I will say, he does have allergies not bad though.
And yes, I was very upset when I found out his girlfriend gave him his inhaler, didn't know the affects it could cause, but I was upset. I had just left the track meet, so it would not have happend had I been there.

I will use these suggestions, thank you so much.

Strange thing is...he and his brother was just at the doctor a week prior to this....I told him, wish something would had happend before the appointment last week, we could have addressed it then. But it is what it is....lol.

It can definitely develop at any age. I had an asthma attack when I was a teenager and my elderly mom also has it.
Asthma can be triggered anytime.

Thanks everyone, my son did see the Doctor today, and yes he has some form of asthma. I did not go with him since he's 18 so I didn't no get all the particulars, but his doctor persrcribed him a inhaler.

I'll have to call him later tonight to see what's going on....he's with his dad right now.

Thanks again everyone.

I tell you it's very easy to over use/mis use the inhaler and it can be dangerous.

At 18 he does not have the brain capacity or attention span to pay attention to a doctor on the correct way to use an inhaler unless he is extremely exceptional.

YOU or his dad make sure you know how it is to be used and how often is safe and make him show you he can use it properly.. Please.

I didn't develop asthma until I was in my 40s. The doctor said that hormones play a part in a lot of the changes that take place in the body as we age, including diseases and their manifestation.

My friend is 32 and developed asthma 2 years ago. I believe it can do at any age. I read a book 'Conscious Medicine' by Gill Edwards who believes that any dis-ease (in this case asthma) can have psychological reasons. Gill Edwards was a clinical psychologist and spiritual author and reading from her book: 'Asthma can have underlying meaning of suppressed grief and sorrow. Feeling suffocated (by a relationshipor situation). Feeling unworthy to live- 'not even allowed to breath''.
My friend developed asthma when she was in a relationship with the guy who abused her. So perhaps emotions really play big role in our well-being?
I hope your son will get better soon x

At age 40 I was diagnosed with asthma. "Excuse me, but I didn't order this," I told my doctor. We laughed. But asthma is no laughing matter.

I learned that wildfire smoke triggers my asthma, along with heavy pollen bloom in the Spring.

I didn't develop asthma until I was almost 40. No history of respiratory allergies but I spent 13 years working in construction, breathing a lot of particulate matter, and then got a pneumonia infection from dust on the job. My respiratory system got pretty beat up and I've had asthma ever since.

I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 46. My allergist also mentioned that women are prone to develop allergic diseases (such as asthma) at times of great hormonal shifts --puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. I was not menopausal at the time but it was sneaking up on me. (Still sneaking!). :-)

I want to speak to the theory that asthma can be psychological. That is an old and disproven theory, but stress has been shown to make asthma far worse. When I developed asthma it was during the waning last years of my marriage, when my stress level was very high. The next two years -- separation year and divorce year -- my asthma was very bad and I had bronchitis and respiratory viruses constantly. But the next year I was healthy, started my biking again, and it's been uphill ever since. So, watch out for excess stress.

I had it as a child (severely) and fortunately grew out of it. Certain things were triggers, like fresh cut grass or other outdoor allergens (and lots of running, of course.) Dad's continual second hand smoke didn't help either.

I will implore you to consider non-outdoor "pollutants" as well. NUMERO UNO on such a list should be all these highly scented chemical products people are continually subjecting themselves to like all the fabric softener dryer sheets, laundry "boosters", Febreeze, scented candles, etc. Who knows what the long term effects of all this crud is from our friends at DOW chemical really are? For me, I don't use these products, and like if I'm out golfing with someone who has used these laundry products for instance, just being NEAR them almost gives me the feeling of an asthma attack, and I have not had an attack in probably 15 years. It burns my throat and lungs. I can smell it from upwards of 25 yards away. That cannot be good for you. In the winter, when taking walks in our neighborhood, the smell of these laundry products wafting out of peoples' dryer vents even hundreds of yards away still affects me. They should be illegal in my estimation for infringing on my right to clean air!

Wall Street is killing people off with their chemical scourge. Avoid this junk if you are not already. Seriously.

Asthma- Can it develope at any age?

For the three falls previous to this last one I had a consistent dry barking cough of 12, 14, & 16 weeks respectively. I went to the docs a total of 4 times the first two years, spend lots of money for dr visit, blood work and x-rays to be told it’s a virus, (translation, they did not know what it was so blame it on a virus), and I had to let it run its course.

Now my regular doctor is very popular and hard to get in to see off the cuff. He sort of reminds me of Duggie housier, (however that is spelled). I happen to be in a period of coughing when I came in for my 6th month physical. His diagnose was allergy induced asthmas and he put me on singular. He told me for some people this worked great and others this was ineffective, I was in the others group.

The medicine did not make the coughing stop and it made me feel worse so I barley took two weeks of a months worth of medicine before I stop taking them.

My next 6th month visit with the doc I had informed him of this. He then prescribed two inhalers, one was to take periodically during the day, and the other was like a quick response. He said that after three days to a week the cough would likely go away and not return for some time. And that has been the case. When the cough comes on I use the inhalers for a few days, the cough goes away and I am cough free for many months.

I was like 45 the first year these coughing fits came on me.

It's funny I devloped asthama when I started taking allergy shots. Anyways he defintely neeeds to avoid dairy products.
I only had the mild asthma. Eventually I stopped taking the inhaler. Changing your diet is the key with plenty of good water.
Mother was right eat your fruits and vegetables. Food allergies can play a role.

Wow...I never would have thought Dairy products could play a role in Asthama, he does like to eat a lot of cereal which requires lots of milk.
Never known for him to have issues with milk when he was younger, breast fed him a few months. But he did have eczema when he was younger, out grew it though.
Thanks for the input R00ft
