| Good spots to go? Posted: 8/16/2005 8:45:05 PM | Hey... Not sure when you will be here... or if you are going to be in Honolulu... but on Friday and Saturday night there is a nightclub called "Rumours" It's in the Ala Moana hotel, across from the Ala Moana mall (in Honolulu/Waikiki). They open the doors at 5pm on Fridays... it's free to get in until about 9, and they play "Oldies" music (the earlier, the older the music is)... they even have swing dancing (if you know how to do that). They *do* have a dress code, long pants and shoes (for men). By the way... the baby birthday thing is called a Baby Luau. They have a BIG celebration for 1st year birthdays (cultural... I think back in the olden days, when a baby lived to be a year old, it was cause for celebration).
If I can be of any other help, let me know... I don't go "out on the town" much... but may be able to offer some other suggestions. - Kris

| Vacationing there Posted: 11/25/2005 10:56:30 PM | Hi from Canada,
I've been contemplating a vacation to Hawaii, friends have told me it can be very, very expensive as far as meals, entertainment goes, etc. They know that I would be bringing my son, ( he's 22) and eats tons of food..

| OOPS! Posted: 11/27/2005 7:59:56 PM | | Depends on what you want to do. If you want to see natural beauty, try one of the other islands other than Oahu. The Big Island is great, you can surf and ski in the same day, see an active volcano, lots of hot springs, waterfalls, that type of stuff. All the islands are beautiful, but Oahu is more commercialized, has more nightlife, the Polynesian Cultural Center, tourist type things to do. | |

| Vacationing there Posted: 12/9/2005 12:28:17 PM | Hi there sky781....couple of tips...1) try a privately owned condo near the beach (Honolulu, Waikiki), they have kitchens so saves on restaurant costs 2) buy souvenirs etc near the end of the trip, there is SOOO much to see and the prices vary drastically, and 3) before buying Hawaiian clothes, consider whether you'll get to wear them at home, otherwise, shorts, tees, and bathing suits are pretty much what you'll live in! I am already planning my next trip there in a year and a half, and can tell you, it's an ADDICTIVE place!! You'll love it! | |

| Vacationing there Posted: 12/9/2005 4:53:06 PM | Aloha! I have to laugh at the responses from people that don't even live on any of the Islands! Although there is one repsonse from an Islander.
It depends on what you want to do and what type of attractions that are wanted. I live on the Big Island of Hawaii and there are 101 things to do here. On the Hilo side it is the family side and not much nightlife here, on the other side there is Kona and alot to do. We do have an active Volcano that is spewing into the Ocean making the Island bigger as I type. There is several things to see and do.
Big Ilsand: Hilo has the active Volcano on this side, there is the Tsunami Museum that is great to visit, Laymans Museum- Granfathers House. Great Bed and Breakfast's to stay at- Stem Vent is my favorite. Down the Hwy is Hapuna Beach- the only real beach on this side of Island. There are a coupel of good Surf spots here as well, along with2 good Botanical Gardens that offer tours. I personally go over to Kona every other weekend and go snorkeling and enjoy the sunsets. My two kids love it over there. Royal Kona has a really great Luau and not far from walking to the pier. There is a outdoor market that has alot to offer with several Island made goods. Kona is where the Iron Man Triathalon is each year in November.
Kauai: Has alot of Beaches and good Golf Courses. I go over there evey 3 months as we have a Branch over there and I visit with Loan Officers and hang out on there miles and miles of beaches.
Oahu: Defianately alot to do here. They have good Surf spots, 2 Decommisioned Ships thatare a great place to tour and learn, water park, Sea Life Park(waimanalo). Lots of great Restaurants.
I don't know about other Islands as these are the ones I have been to and have work on.
So, here are a couple things to do. You can also visit a site called: bigisland.101thingstodo.com/guide

| Vacationing there Posted: 12/11/2005 7:12:32 PM | Hazeleyes, laugh if you must, but just because I don't live there now doesn't mean I never did. I'm a local girl, born and raised on Oahu, so yes, I am an islander. It's all good though! Hope to be moving home soon.
For those visiting, please remember that big wave season is during the winter months, and be careful! I have seen plenty of people get hurt!
Have fun, be safe, and enjoy.

| OOPS! Posted: 4/8/2006 5:48:52 PM | well there is always camping if you like camping bring a tent and camp at numerous places around the island... might want to try going in on a rental house a few blocks from the beach that is cheaper way to go and then you can buy your own food at local grocery stores and cut down on meal costs at local resturants. You can always find vacation rental places on various sites on the internet. try this site might be of some help.... Good luck

| OOPS! Posted: 4/8/2006 5:55:15 PM | | Just another note. The island of Oahu you can stay almost anywhere on the island..Staying in Waikiki or Honolulu will be more expensive then say staying on the Windward side inner island a few blocks from the beach. Lanikai is one of the most beautiful beaches Hawaii has to offer and if you want to shop for souveniers or clothes my suggestion is go to the swap meet at the Aloha Stadium, better deals and better bargains. A must see though is the Polynesian Cultural center you won't regret it..... Aloha | |

| Good spots to go? Posted: 9/2/2007 9:39:32 PM | | You can go to front street if your on Maui I see alot of visiting couples there, or you can just go to the any Beach I suppose. | |

| Vacationing there Posted: 12/22/2008 5:28:21 PM | It is expensive alright here in hawaii especially around waikiki area.they seemed to jack up prices on everything there i would recommend five to ten minutes drive away from waikiki you should be able to eat pretty much anything a decent bargain the alamoana food court would be a good choice i think..i guess what iam suggesting here is dont buy too much around the waikiki area i noticed everything seemed to be much more pricey there..well aloha and wishing you a safe and fun holiday.. | |

| Vacationing there Posted: 12/22/2008 11:32:47 PM | I stayed on the Big Island a few months ago and while it is really expensive to eat out all the time there, there are ways to save a bit of $$$.
We had 2 empty mini fridges in our hotel room and we went into Kona and stocked up at the grocery store.... We ate breakfast and lunch (usually cereal for breakfast and a sandwich with chips for lunch) in our room for the most part... Then went out for dinner. Or we'd grab some fruit while we were out to munch on... We also hit up the Hilo Farmers Market one day to replenish our supplies... So we got not only a taste of local life but also saved a bit of our food budget.
We also discovered fun little places to eat... We all loved Lava Java in Kona and we went there every time we were in town (we stayed right outside Kona and drove around the island alot). We never found anything we didn't like there....
Man, I miss Hawaii now....

| Vacationing there Posted: 12/30/2008 10:05:02 AM | Well considering the snow that Vancouver, BC received over Christmas, I too am glad that I am here on the Big Island for a few weeks..
Was checking out the Hawaii "Events" forums... too bad there is nothing happening while I'm here.. it would have been kind of cool to go to one. I guess PoF is not as busy here as at home... but it was worth a try.
Aloha.

| Vacationing there Posted: 12/30/2008 1:05:28 PM | | Shouldn't be hard to tell but Lulu's is the hot late night spot in Kona and right across the street a restaurant/bar called " 'something' on the Rocks" where the lobsters crawl right up the rocks to your table. Not actually to your table but kinda freaky. | |
|
| Vacationing there Posted: 1/1/2009 1:23:52 PM | | Its either Hugo's or Huggo's on the Rocks... Its awesome at sunset and the drinks will rock your socks off.... | |
|
| Vacationing there Posted: 1/2/2009 2:58:59 AM | That's it Huggo's !! Real aloha there and real hula dancers and hawaiian music. | |
|
| Vacationing there Posted: 1/2/2009 10:01:36 AM | | Yeah we spent most of the evening before our flight out of Kona there... There was a guy playing a ukelele and a sign that said surfer crossing I had to take a pic of for my best friend.... There was also a green flash that night too! It was incredible.... | |

| Vacationing there Posted: 9/27/2009 12:12:05 PM | Sooo looking forward to returning to Honolulu (Waikiki) in a couple of months! Have gone each year, for the past 4 years, and just can't get enough of the sun, sand, and just plain feel of being lost in time, while there. I am travelling solo this time, and looking forward to seeing how it is to travel alone. Lucky for me though, it's condo living, just off the beach, which means no expensive restaurant meals! Who knows, might even meet the man of my dreams there this time! | |
