| | Favorite manufacturer of electric guitars?Page 1 of 3 (1, 2, 3) | | I was wondering what brand of electric guitar you prefer. My dad was a manager at Fender while I was growing up and I still have some Strats and Teles around, including a custom 7 string of each, but I am currently partial to Ibanez because I love the necks and the stability of their trems. What is your favorite and why? | |

I've got an Ibanez RG7321, cuz I always wanted a 7, but...I just find that it sounds unbelievably cheap compared to the stock EMGs that are in my LTD F-401FM. I mean, if I could play Dream Theater, or anything else to actually make use of the 7, I'd probably find a way to love it more (although, putting heavier strings, and tuning down half a step seemed to ruin the tone on the low B. It makes a weird sound on open notes, now). Ultimately, the look, and sound of ESPs grabs me. The F series is just...ridiculous looking. SCREAMS of metal. In fact, I love the design so much, my next instrument will be an F series bass.

The RI's (MIM, MIJ, and MIA) are all exceptional creatures. They have a certain timeless style too. As a bassist, I love my Rickenbacker 4003...also wanna get a Ric guitar. I like the Epi. Wildkat as well and Italia makes cool guitars. Also an old Vox bass would be nice.

It's got the Les Paul singlecut body and sunburst finish, but it was 1/4th of the price, and it's WAY lighter. It doesn't have that full tone that a Gibson does, but it definitely gets the job done with my boss effects pedal. Great guitar, especially for a Studio Edition model.

| Favorite manufacturer of electric guitars? Posted: 5/7/2012 7:53:54 AM | I have 3 dozen electric guitars...kid you not. Played for decades.
Favorite guitars...Fender Aerodyne and Ibanez 720SZ (have 2)....also have a dozen Fender Stratocasters and a Telecaster. For metal my preference is a Jackson Kelly. I have a Gibson Les Paul but it's not really my sound...otherwise a great guitar. I also a have a few BC Rich's I like for visuals (especially a BC Rich Bich metalweb..EMGs). I have a Dean and a Schechter...rarely touch them. For 'Hollow body' sound I pefer my Ibanez Artcore but don't really know Gretsch (never playerd one except at the store). I also have an Ibanez accoustic/electric for plugged in accoustic music.
If i had to pick 'the guitar' if i could only have one, it'd be a Fender Strat. If I was recommending an inexpensive guitar to a newbie...Fender Squire Strat. Strats are versatile but as important, easy to modify and repair....no brainer taking them apart and lots of parts available.
My Fender Strats are 'American' only because I've had them for years. Today I'd recommend a Mexican one for less half the price...also BUY USED...newbies buy new guitars and old guys like me buy them off them 'cheap'. Buy a used guitar and you can use it, flip it, and not be out of pocket.

| Favorite manufacturer of electric guitars? Posted: 5/7/2012 10:57:57 PM | Guitars have been my bread and butter since I was 17 years old. I have owned around a thousand professional grade guitars in my life. From vintage classics like 50's Strats and Tele, to modern stuff like PRS and Suhr.
I love guitars, period. Over the past 10 years I have really been into old Charvel's made between 1978-1985. Each was made to order (before Custom Shop became a sales pitch phrase). Rarely are 2 the same. I love that variety as well as the perfect blend of Gibson and Fender (the original SuperStrat). I like some older ESP's and Ibanez guitars, and they are affordable. I don't tend to hang on to them though. Gibson, I hated the 70's product, 80's was okay, 90's getting better, but lately they are really overrated for the quality. I have played a few out of the box that were shipped green (wood wasn't allowed to fully season, so it warps). You have to pay a lot to get a decent fret dress factory out of that place as well. I can do my own fretjobs, but isn't that what they are supposed to do?
Anyway, figure out what you think you may like and go try them. If they don't click, don't force it. Try everything and don't let the brand name or price influence your decision.

I've personally had a devil of a time with the Les Paul, which is a bummer considering Les was a big influence. Out of the over 100 I've owned there have been exactly two that suffered from the dreaded headstock breakage and both were Les Pauls. None of my friends has had this problem. The only Gibson I currently own is a Les Paul Jr. Special with P90s.

| Favorite manufacturer of electric guitars? Posted: 5/9/2012 6:57:03 PM | Ibanez has always did me good. Not always the best fit and finish, but the top end stuff kills it and has the options so far as ERG goes. I'm pining for a M8M model at the moment.
Gibsons feel like toy guitars to me these days... with only six strings and dinky-ass 24 3/4" scales. I played a guy's LP a ways back and it felt like a f**kin' uke... LOL!
Money no object though, I'd get something REALLY modern and unique. A Spalt Instruments Apex, Toone Orchid, Tueffel Birdfish, or something from .strandbergGuitarworks*.

| Favorite manufacturer of electric guitars? Posted: 5/11/2012 8:38:38 PM | I try not to be a fanboy when it comes to guitars. They all have their winners and losers.
I've owned an Ibanez RG1550 (which is essentially a stripped down Jem), a first edition Peavey Vandenberg Signature, and a Dean Vendetta Resurrection.
Many of the Parker guitars I've played are a joy to play, but boy, do they look goofy.

| Favorite manufacturer of electric guitars? Posted: 5/12/2012 12:18:13 PM | I just... I find single-coil pickups to be tinny. I like the beef of a humbucker, or the utter, destructive crunch of actives. Thusly, I'm less likely to pick up a Fender. I haven't touched one in a while, though. I'm simply going off what I played a long time ago.
I do like bass, though. So, maybe I'll still be of the same mind.

I've always been a fan of Fender, Except for when they ****ed up my Tele on a simple repair :( Lazy **stards!
Find another guitar tech.
That's like messing up Kraft dinner. Teles are so darn simple to maintain. Indestructable beasts. I have a 78 Tele and a Fender t-90 (like a thinline Tele) . I'd use them to bang in fence posts or jack up a car to change a tire.

I just... I find single-coil pickups to be tinny. I like the beef of a humbucker, or the utter, destructive crunch of actives. Personally, I find that single-coil pickups have a great deal more character than most humbuckers. That being said, I have replaced the single-coil higain pickups on my Rickenbacker 330 with Ric Humbuckers so I would have that available in my sonic pallet. I replaced the single-coil higains on one of my Ric 12 strings with single coil toaster top pickups which are just amazing sounding. I still have other guitars with more conventional single coil pickups, so I have a choice.

| Favorite manufacturer of electric guitars? Posted: 5/12/2012 4:24:19 PM | Ya, I have Strats with the three single pickups...but also a couple of 'fat strats' with a humbucker. I aso have a couple of Superstrats with Seymour Duncan pickups.
However, if I had to choose one guitar nothing plays like a Standard Strat. Humbuckers sing whereas single coils scream like a woman coming.

| Favorite manufacturer of electric guitars? Posted: 5/22/2012 6:54:28 AM | | O suppose it depends on what I am playing. Mostly strats and telees. But I love the sound of my g&l rampage. For clea to slight distortion I prefer the fenders but for a heavy sound I lile the SG aint shabby either. | |

| Favorite manufacturer of electric guitars? Posted: 5/22/2012 7:59:45 AM | I use a BC Rich NT Warlock with Duncans for metal. I'm not partial to BC Rich, but it was one of the only metal guitars I was able to find with an Ebony fretboard - and Ebony fretboards play better than any other kind IMO. I also really dig Schecter Hellraisers.
For all other kind of music, I use a Strat. It just can't be beat for versatility.
*Edit* Yes I realize I'm playing an Ibanez in my photo.

d Ebony fretboards play better than any other kind IMO
I have a BC Rich Bich metalweb neck-through with an ebony fretboard. Can't say i find any difference in fretboard material on electrics. I have almost identical Strats with maple and rosewood...again no difference.
But...what matters is what feels best to us when we play. We guitar players are a quirky bunch. I've sworn by all types of stuff that makes no scientific sense. We're basically insane.
Sometimes turning a knob a tenth on the equalizer or changing a pick can make as much difference in sound as a , brand of strings, pickup, etc. Some of the newer Roland special effects pedals are downright spooky...I can play my Jackson Kelly through it and make it sould like a classical nylon-stringed guitar in a concert hall. It almost takes away all the practice of over 40 years of playing.

| Favorite manufacturer of electric guitars? Posted: 5/22/2012 7:42:58 PM | You won't be seeing much ebony on new instruments these days. Not are there trade restrictions on ebony, but I thing most of the items permitted for export are carvings made by local artists where the trees grow. It doesn't make any ecological sense to use it anymore either. The trees have been over harvested. The company whose guitars I have a predilection for, Rickenbacker, has gone from using Bubinga (African Rosewood) to West Indian Rosewood and I, for one, think the new fretboards look amazing. My opinion is that rosewood fingerboards are very close to ebony feel-wise. My Rics all have varnished fretboards so it doesn't really make much difference in the feel. | |

| Favorite manufacturer of electric guitars? Posted: 5/23/2012 11:23:08 AM | Interesting points by both, and I agree.
For example, I also have a Schecter Hellraiser V-1, which is a considerably higher end guitar. And also a Dean EVO, for pretty much just beating up.. it's like a $150 guitar. Both have Rosewood fretboards - but I could swear the Hellraiser's fretboard feels infinitely more smooth than the Dean. And the Hellraiser's fretboard does feel very similar to my BC Rich Ebony. For some reason the Ebony just feels smoother to me.
I'm also a sucker for lacquer/gloss maple fretboards, particularly the ones found on Fender Strats and Teles. Something about the feel of those really brings out my creativity. But I've had other guitarists tell me they can't stand that style.
The most important rule for guitar is certainly - play what you want!
