I'm an Aussie too ...in Melbourne...and my 21 yo daughter is flying to England on Thursday. (Day after tomorrow.)

She's going with her Aunt. My daughter has never flown before and in fact has never been out of this state!! She's a very quiet type ...as is my sister in law... and they're staying in London for two weeks, then Bath....to see the Roman Baths, Stone Henge, the Harry Potter Exhibition, general sight seeing, then off to Scotland.

She doesn't drink so no pubs for her. However, I reckon if you do go to the pubs, they'll love our aussie accent and you'll soon meet people. Good luck and enjoy!!

You'll have a great time! It's been awhile since I lived in England but let's see what I can remember...

There's so much to see and do, that your best bet would be to grab a Frommer's style travel guide and map out a bunch of places you want visit. Be sure to check Time Out magazine or the website for local entertainment and events.

I'll second (third?) the vote for Cornwall, England. Oxford is also really nice and the Oxford Tube is a comfy express coach bus that will take you straight into London (and back). From Oxford, you can also catch other coach buses which will bring you around to other cities, as well. The buses run all hours of the day and night. Bring a good camera!

In London, there's Camden for great markets (and the hot punks, but that's just me), Oxford Street for the "shop till you drop" effect, Soho has some great nightclubs and pubs, Piccadilly Circus for shopping/entertainment, wander Marylebone High Street, the Royal Parks have some great events and Queen Mary's Gardens in Regent's Park is really nice, and Kings Cross Train Station is a major hub for trains that go all over the country and beyond. Catch one to Edinburgh, Scotland. You won't be disappointed!

Yeah man! Right, up here in Scotland you should hit up all the big cities Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness. If your looking for some beautiful scenery then you'll love the highlands and islands but if your looking for fun and nightlife then Edinburgh and Glasgow are awesome places

If you head in to London defiantly hit up oxford street in the evening. Wax museum is awesome!! Brighton was cool to hang out at. Oxford i went to a house party.. Nottingham was pretty fun to. Once you make friends in england it's a crazy place to party!

If you want to visit London and drive be aware of the congestion charge. Using the underground or buses are ok. You can use an oyster card, that you can put money on and use like a credit card. All underground (Tube) stations use them and buses. For the underground you swipe when you enter a station and when you exit and the exact fare will be deducted. You can set it up to auto top up so you don't run out of credit. But you can also top up at some shops.

If you want to explore more of the country, like a previous post states, don't visit Slough. Absolutely nothing there to visit for fun.

Major cities are good as well as the country, Visit the lake district for sights. You will be surprised by how small the UK is compared to Oz. You can get from London to Southampton in just over an hour on train or from London to Birmingham (England's second city) in an hour and a half to two hours.

I live near London in a town in Basingstoke, there are a few places around here that could be of interest. If you like history there's the Milestones museum. There's two theatres, Festival place is great for shopping. There is also the Oracle in Reading (Pronounced Red-ing instead of reading a book).

If you are looking for festivals, theres: Basingstoke Live on Saturday 14 & Sunday 15 July 2012 and the Reading festival 24 - 26 Augast 2012 (you need to book tickets).

If there is anything specific you want to know just ask. I will help to find out.

just to add travelling outside london best to get ticket online or book flight with flybee it amazing cheap.. and keep in mind first class dont meant first class like what we have in north america.. especially in weekend. but definitely spacious.... find them very cheap and accessible just dont overpack luggage like me..lol

Hopefully the aussie traveller is back home curious to know any suggestion for the next traveller.. in my case i will definitely go back.. to Cornwall or Devon.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Stratford-on -Avon, was there in '92, gorgeous setting, loved Tudor architecture there. Warwickshire area is great, too.. Also liked Cardiff, as well as London. There are so many places to see and things to do in the UK, I hope to get back and see them.
