Coming to AustraliaPage 1 of 1
I'm planning a trip this year to Australia and I'd like to know directly from the people that live there where I might find a great vacation. I want a place where there are lots of people (more women than men would be nice), I don't really want to tour although I might make some short sight-seeing trips. I want to surround myself with the beautiful Australian accent and possibly find my lasting relationship. I'm looking to stay 3 weeks...who knows, maybe I'll try to stay forever. :)

You do know how big Austrlia is, right? It's a large country with diverse regions and climates. Mountains, ski fields, beaches.. what sort of holiday do you want? What season are you planning on visiting in? What types of activities will you be looking for?

I want to escape winter here in Maine, USA. So I'm looking at probably southern Australia in the months of October to February. I may stay as long as 3 months (longest I can stay on a visa) but not shorter than 3 weeks.

Not really looking to fill all of my time running around the countryside, my ideal vacation would be to make a few friends, visit a few pubs, attend a few games, go out to dinner a lot, visit a few more pubs...sit and listen to the Australian womens accents...anything relaxing, anything where the chances of me having to listen to someone with my accent are at zero. I want to be the only American in the area lol. I'd love to live in Australia eventually.

Deb is right.
It's a vast continent but i dont know if you'll meet your perfect match in just 3 short weeks
Everything is far,far away from each other and to see Uluru, the Sydney Opera House, the Great Barrier reef, etc etc involves lots of air travel. You cant do it all in one day!
Our skies are blue as blue with startling sunshine and we're a very easy going lot.
You'll have a blast...........

Hey Armored

Greetings to a fellow American - Im a New Yorker currently residing in Perth along with many others mainly employed by Chevron

Perth is a beautiful city BUT has a few down sides to it...its expensive, its isolated, there are way more blokes than women here thanks to the mining boom..(this not necessarily a good thing) .and not much happens here...its called WA - wait awhile, for a reason.and at the time your looking at coming, its beyond hotter than the sun !!!

But in saying that if you dont swing over then you will miss out on the most beautiful beaches in the world...excellent wineries, awesome scenery up North and some of the best seafood you will ever taste..yep better than Maine....

As for Aussie womens accent....mmmm...the one thing you will notice, Australians speak really fast....and they speak slang ..it will take you a while to work it all out...they say what they dont mean and mean what they dont say (yes you read rite) but all in all they are a good decent honest people... they just eat their coat of arms..go figure..

I agree it depends on what you want to do.

You are coming in Summer and being a Sydneysider you can't beat a Sydney summer.
Sydney is the most beautiful city in the world.
A stunning harbour, fabulous weather, friendly people, short drives or rides to spectacular inland scenery and even more beaches and waterways.

Extra benefits. More women than men.
In summer lots of women on beaches in bikinis, or on some beaches just bottoms and the nude beaches in a birthday suit.

Fabulous bush walking in the Blue Mountains and other areas. There are bush walking clubs. (It is not wise to bush walk alone. Mainly because you can easily get lost and summer is our bush fire season. You don't want to get up close and personal with a bush fire. Believe me)

Great wineries in the Hunter Valley.
Magnificent roads, nice and windy for bike rides.

A single 40 something man will have no difficulty finding single ladies.
We have a shortage of straight, single men.
Especially in the inner city areas. (And out my way as well.)

Welcome. I am certain you will have a fabulous time.

WA - Spacious, slow, hot, slow,

NT - Slower, HOT and rains during summer... can't use the beaches really and did i mention its raining during summer?

SA - Nobody talks about

TAS - Australians only really make fun of

NSW - Vast activities, fast paced, good nightlife < TOURIST STATE

QLD - The sunny state, best beaches, relaxed, much more a beach lifestyle, theme parks < TOURIST STATE

VIC - I find to be more american in culture. More of a state for arts and culture. < TOURIST STATE

^^^^ this summary of WA, NT, TAS, NSW, QLD and VIC ain't half bad.

Take your pick of Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. They're pretty similar and they'll all give you 'Aussie city' which is what it seems you're after. Don't bother going the extra distance to Perth, its another 5 hours flying each way for not much difference. Those four are the only big cities in Aus.

If you don't want to hear American accents, don't go to Darwin - thats where the Marines are. Don't go to Alice Springs, thats where the CIA is. Don't go to Geraldton, thats where the new US military satellite base is. Don't go to the North West cape, thats where the submarine communications station is. Don't go to Canberra, thats where the diplomats are. Don't go to Cairns or the Gold Coast, thats where the tourists are. Don't go to Christmas Island, thats like our Guantanamo Bay...

Well we do have some bits of Antartctica that only has the odd frozen penguin. Not so many yanks there, but not so many pubs with Aussie women in them either!

Are you kidding me...

Shooting guns and blowing sh*t up
-- you are a north Queensland kind of person... the folk up here pride themselves on the latest "kill" -lol

Though, not all of us subscribe to the same view.

Anything north of Mackay should suit you well... the folk in Brisbane are a tad more skittish than that---

I am a Townsville gal -- which is Far North Queensland...

Oh, and you will be bringing your American accent with you?

In 1945 they did...

There is an Aussie base at Shoalwater Bay north of Rocky that that is the main area used in the biennial Exercise Talisman Sabre. It is one of six locations in northern and central Australia, the Coral Sea, and in Honolulu, Denver, and Suffolk, Va., though the bulk of the exercises are concentrated at the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area and other locations in northern and central Australia (eg. the Townsville Field Training Area, and the Bradshaw Field Training Area in central Queensland and in the Northern Territory) and Australia's territorial sea and exclusive economic zone.

If you come to this country expect all the local wildlife and plants to kill you.

Our primary language isn't 'English', its 'screaming'.

Just did 14 weeks with daughter.

The petro is bloody he11, the cigs are flaming outragous, beaches are pure heaven, everyone will treat you like royality outside of act/syd/and brizzy. Most will love your accent. Throw back a few tinnies with a bushpig and you just might want to stay...lol

Did syd, up to mid queensland, down to act, back up to mid nsw all staying within 2 hours of coast racking up 8,000k

I'm assumimg on a 676 tourist visa? yeah? I'm looking into a work visa next time as more liberal with times and what you can bring/ship/send.

Open a westpac a.c.count.. Totally free and it will save tons in the long run. no fees for first 6 months except international transfers

Think about transportation.. I bought a nice 20 yr old hyundia with 6 months regro ...(pink)

Visiting travel is alot more expensive..Cheapest motel is like 100 plus per not..worse on holidays which you will be there. There is a site called wotif(dot)com

The country is heaven if you are doing backpack, camping type travel. Gas grills and showers EVERYWHERE.

They drive very very slow there.

Take as much cigarettes as you can legally take..

I did 14 weeks with car/plane tickets/daughter for a little over $20,ooo, but strictly with the couple dozen friends I had made and stayed with from pof over the years.

Feel free to contact me if you like..

Seems you've had alot of advice so far. How confusing for you!! lol.

I see Maine is bordered at the South East by the Atlantic Ocean. Do you like fishing and beaches and quieter types of pubs or the more rowdy and culturally diverse city life and pubs?

Melbourne (where I live) is the capital of Victoria, at the south east of Australia. As one poster said this state leans more towards arts and gardens, but also sports and fabulous shopping.

Other features:
Football Grand Final which is held here in Melbourne in late Sept / early Oct. ( Huge day!! )
Melbourne Cup Day on 6th November. One of the worlds most famous horse race. Another huge day!!
Crown Casino. Absolutely massive.
Very hot in January and Feb. (up to 43 Celcius)

NSW: (Sydney)
Largest capital city.....and no....it's NOT the Capital of Australia.
Sydney Harbour, beaches, night life.
Average temperature slightly lower than Melbourne.

QLD: (Brisbane).......Gold Coast......
Glorious beaches, very busy in the Summer. You'll love the Meter Maids!!!
Jupiters Casino.
Unfortunately suffered horrendous flooding last summer.
Average temp varies but still gets very hot.

Phew! I think I've said enough for now. :)
