I the best thing I ever BBQ back when beef was a bit cheaper. I took a prime rib and marinated it in a 1/5 of Jack Danial's Whiskey and a bootle of merlot wine with losts of garlic and peppercorns. Let that work it magic for 24hrs. then I smoked it for 9hrs with hickory. Happy BBQ season.

believe it or not............i think it was a couple of rabbits cooked over an open fire.....[mostly oak and beech].......not really much in the way of seasoning...just some salt, pepper and wild mint

course..the fact that i was 2 days hungry proubly helped the most...........but to my memory....thats one of the best meals over an open fire that i can recall

Easy.................

Bluefin bellies.......... I let them soak in teriyaki, brown sugar, garlic, Tony's, black pepper........

then smoked at about 225 for about 1-1/2 hour.

Food for the gods.

sockeye salmon fillet covered with lemon slices, garlic slices, onion, red bell pepper and dill cooked over indirect heat on a cedar plank.

pork ribs marinated in apple cider, garlic n stuff and then served with an apple compote. amazing.

turkey breast brined and smoked while on a fishing trip. it was thanksgiving and i wanted a meal. that was the first thing i really ever smoked. it was unbeatable. i got lucky.

bbq'd a whole duck before...gave it a simple overnight brine...patted it dry next day...made the diamond shaped cuts on the skin and gave it a massage with some kinda rub my brother sent me from holt-renfrew...pre-heated the barbie then i shut off the gas to one side...placed a pan on the bbq bricks but under the grill...(did that b4 pre-heating) and i roasted the duck over indirect heat...also added soaked hickory chips for a smoky flavor..
the meat was moist and the skin crisped up perfectly...
i dont normally like duck but this one tasted mighty fine

I made some BBQ pears. basted with grand marnier and served with vannila ice cream. Cut the pears in half and grill until soft.

Back in 2004 I was able to purchase an entire bison for the meat. Some of the steaks were absolutely incredible on the barbecue. You have to keep bison rare,which is no stretch for my family. I've never had even the best cut of beef compare to the worst cut of bison.

Caddy that sounds yummy but you can make a homemade pound cake and slice it and put the slice cake on the grill and add your pears and ice cream on top of the grilled pound cake slices and add a dollop of homemade whip cream yummy.

The BEST thing I ever BBQ'd?
That is going to be hard, I am sure I could say 100 things.

I LOVE ANY MEAT best on the grill or smoked, hands down, the best over any other method of cooking.

However, because it is less usual (more modern) I guess the most memorable are the things like veggies and fruits.

Grilled pineapple, peaches, nectarines, plums, banana are outstanding. I also love grilled any vegetable that will stand up to the grilling and whole heads of escarole with a balsamic vinaigrette and chunks of bleu cheese or Romano cheese shavings over it, right off the grill, is definitely memorable.

Though, every summer I think a lot about grilled hot chili's, peppers of all kinds, and crustaceans, most of all.

Grilling whole HOT chili's then drizzling with a high quality extra virgin olive oil or grapeseed oil with a good finishing salt and a squeeze of citrus, and maybe cotijo cheese or a shot of mescal, is AMAZING. Grilled Shrimp, King Crab Legs, or Lobster with lots of spice is also mind blowing. Those are the most memorable for me, I guess.

it's amazing how so many people don't know the difference between bbq and grilling yet they can figure out that frying and boiling are different. lol.

might be because home depot sells grills and call them bbqs.

i might grill a steak tonight and bbq some ribs tomorrow.

my barbecue has a grill over top of the coals...so i am like totally confuzzled here...f*ck it...i'm buyin a hibatchi...
i will go wayyyy out on a limb here and dare to suggest that the OP meant what is the best thing you ever cooked on that device found in most back yards or patios ...
so...having said that...the duck i cooked was fairly awesome...i also recall doing a baron of beef in my bbq/grill once...i kinda butterflied the baron...slathered the innards with dijon mustard and stuffed it with onions and thick cut bacon...tied it shut with butchers twine and did that using indirect heat with a packet of wood chips for smoke

First time I heard someone say they BBQ'ed a ribeye......I asked them why the hell they went and ruined a good ribeye with BBQ sauce!!

I think it depends on where you live on what you call it......
but I'm not so dense I didn't understand what Caddy was talking about in his opening post!!

just like some people call it soda, some call it pop and some call it Coke.......it doesn't make any of them wrong!!
(other than those that call it a Coke and have a Sprite, that one will forever confuse me!!)

anyhoo......
I grilled a basket of yellow squash, zuchinni, egg plant, garlic, onions and peppers last night........
tossed them in with some cooked pasta and a can of stewed tomatoes ....mmm mmmmm!
(I used canned tomatos because so far I haven't seen any good ones in the stores here yet......but mine are growing nicely in the garden......so soon I'll have good fresh ones)

It is easy to see why everyone has their own definition and use their own verbiage.
Personally, I tend to think of smoking as BBQ (indirect fire, low temp, lots of smoke) and then the other method is Grilling (hot flame or coals with meat on a grate), but officially, that is incorrect. So I just try to go with what I think the conversation is going. Why start an argument and get people all riled up...seems childish especially when it is not officially supported.

I have seen this argument MANY times and one of the first things I learned is that BBQ SAUCE has no impact whatsoever on either way of thinking. Master Meat Smokers never slather, baste, or brush their meat with sauce or even serve sauce unless asked.

Caddyman started a nice thread, let us all just go with it.

Same goes for "having a BBQ" or "having a cookout". Either way, people are going to gather to cook food outdoors on a grill and/or a fire.

actually it does. a pop and a soda are the same thing. bbq and grilling while similar, are not the same.

bbq is done with low indirect heat. grilling is with high direct heat. you don't grill a whole pig and you don't bbq a 12 oz tbone.

I'm so confused :( Hopefully I can still post without getting bashed.

I made a pizza on my grill, crust was from scratch. It was divine, a little tricky to get the temp right though.
The temp was too high once and the crust burned but the rest of it wasn't done.
Grilled pineapple slices are so easy and so yummy...the natural juices in the fruit are amazing once cooked.

my pineapple BBQ sauce is varies depending on what I have in the kitchen. But, I start with a large can of pineapple juice. Reduce the juice to a syrup. Then I add a large can of tomato juice with some ketcup and brown sugar. then I add some worcestershire,chili powder,cumin,thyme,paprika,mollassas,salt,pepper,dry mustard. simmer for 20 min. But, you can twist the recipe to your liking. sometimes I will add some red curry paste and some sesame oil to give it an asian flavor.

do you have a pizza stone? try that if you haven't already. pizza can take a high heat. traditional wood burning pizza ovens reach 750 degrees and higher.

i do pizza on my propane grill with the stone in the summertime. put the stone on the grate right after you light the grill so it heats up. get your temp up to around 400-425 and put the pizza straight onto the stone. check in ten mins. might be done by then.

i didn't think i'd like pizza done on the grill for some reason. no idea why. i wish i would have tried it sooner. it's just as good as oven baked.
