any drawbacks to exercising hard everyday?Page 1 of 2    (1, 2)
I would like to hear other peoples experience with working there body hard everyday for prolonged periods of time. Is it possible to keep it going for years?

Ive been riding BMX for quite a few years now and always rode pretty hard even in the beginning but usually would do 2-5 sessions a week till exhaustion. I noticed that I would always pull a back muscle regularly which sometimes put me out of action for a few days or made it really difficult to ride.

But when I started doing it every day like clockwork I quit pulling back muscles. I did notice that my skin doesnt heal as quick. My shins stay in a constant state of cuts and bruises like something out of a horror flick but dont heal as fast. I also have to back off certain tricks for a while that really stress my wrist or I would have a sharp pain when I pick something up the wrong way.

Are there any long distance marathon runners here that train for long periods of time? Do you just have some desk job during the day? I couldnt imagine someone working some manual labor job and training all the time.

Over Training - Been There Done That.

Your body needs a chance to heal. Exercising intensely or doing a physically demanding job will require you to get some rest. Everyone is going to be different in how fast they recover. When we are younger and/or healthier we typically require less time to recover. If you do some searching on recommended training routines you will always find that there are easy days and rest days built into the schedule whether that is for guys competing at a world class level in marathon, ironman triathalon, multistage bicycle racing etc. or just for the average Joe or Jane trying to get or stay fit.

The bottom line is you have to listen to your body. If you find that you are going backwards in your fitness goals or not making any gains there is a strong possibility that you are over training.

It is true the older we get the slower our bodies heal. I have noticed that when I get a cut it takes forever for the marks to disappear and I bruise much more easily.
I do believe that over training can cause depression in some people. I am not sure how professional sports people go about avoiding that and all the injuries.

I would think that if you are riding BMX then you would be constantly jarring your wrists as you land.

Hard? Yes. In my opinion.

I take 3 days off HARD work outs and use low weights one day for 15 minutes and just stretch and walk so I can heal.
Have a lay on my beehind day also.

You can do core everyday if you dont over do it.
Run? I wouldn't
Heavy weights I wouldn't.

Yoga yes I would, but I take a break from that also.

I have had to many injuries then couldn't do anything for a while ( months) so I stick to a regimen of varying hard, moderate and light exercise.
Stop if I feel something is not right.

I watch my back, knees and elbows carefully.

The bottom line is you have to listen to your body. If you find that you are going backwards in your fitness goals or not making any gains there is a strong possibility that you are over training.

hi.. like this. great question and opportunity to hear from all the experts.. no sarcasm at all here. there are so many good things said, just have to maybe ummm filter it all a bit.
so i work a manual labor job...
operating manually actuated impact devices all day, or climbing scaffolding with 75 lbs., or carrying 2x10x 16 foot planks through the mud, or 300 lbs of mortar at a time... all pretty normal in the course of a day at the office. some will say B.S. but have never struck a chisel with a 15 lb hammer either. lol.
i do all this because i enjoy the way it makes me feel and the product of my labor is very permanant. i have had to remove it on occation.... no fun.
as far as training after work.... yep- love it. i do heavy weights 3 or 4 times a week, and cardio 3 or 4 times a week. i can run for hours and recover quickly. i can pick up heavy things over and over.... which is good, because i'm am not the brightest bulb at times. i don't like some lifts... and try not to judge myself and others by what they bench, or squat or whatever. personally i like the practical fitness. pullups and dips are great. toss a plate on a chain around your waist... all the better.
drop sets are great. pull with the weights until failure. then drop the weight and fail again. i do these on a regular basis. always fail and always push till you puke.
many will argue with my methodology. science even proves it "unhealthy". it works for me. i'm in good shape and feel good. 35 y.o. and can smoke the 20 yearolds.....
i change my routine every few months. bike/run/pt... weight/bodyweight..... high reps/ light weight.... low rep/heavyweight.... fast explosive movements/ slow torture... lol all very fun.
i recommend charting yourself for 100 days. posterboard on the fridge: sleep, cal intake, money spent, suppliments, everything.... bootcamp is 13 weeks. 100 days will give you a good idea of your actual habits and routines. it makes it easier to change the things if you actually know what they are. i find that i "think" and i "do" are often a lil different.

word of caution: over training can cause ailments like tendonitis, and other slow healing pains. especially in the wrists and elbows, knees... but so can sitting behind a desk banging away at these machines all day.
i say.... test to failure

Pretty impressive that you can do some hard work like that and still put in a lot of extra training after work.
Ive noticed one thing is I have to ride in the morning , otherwise if I do it within 4 hours or so of bed ill never get to sleep well. My body tends to be stay revved up for a long while.

But I have noticed I tend to suffer injury less if I plug away at it every day but not quite as hard instead of "till ya drop" every other day or so.

I probably need to do a search or create another thread.

Has anyone benefited from seeing a nutritionist? I heard they can do blood work and tell exactly, if anything, as to what your body is missing as far as nutrients. I dont take any sort of supplements but figured its worth finding out.

There may be a sensible reason for the 7 day week with one
day of rest prescribed by the ancients.

Personally my experience is that driving hard every day leads
to exhaustion and a hot-wired nervous system. I read
that Russian trainers, concerned with early mortality in
world class Russian athletes, have introduced de-conditioning
protocols to take former athletes into lives of health and
productivity in middle age and beyond. Too many world
class athletes die young. We don't always get the full story
about drug use but look at Florence Griffith Joyner and
maybe have a think about whether it is worth it.

Check out what a sports doctor like Dr.Mauro DiPasquale has to say about vitamins for an athlete.Your run of the mill vitamins are not considered adequate.Food grown with artificial fertilizers do not have the full spectrum of nutrients. The old Europeans were right about our crappy food here.

My only routine is advanced yoga 3X a week. The rest is up to how I feel and needs to be a fun activity like bike riding in a scenic area, ocean swimming, remodeling project etc... If I feel like staying in bed all day reading or playing on the forums I will do it. Usually my energy levels are very high a a result of the rest I allow myself IMO.

Best discovery of the year for me is therapeutic enzymes. According to my naturopathic physician this is where most reseach in her field is now. I found Wobenzyme from Germany on sale, normally around $70 here, after years of them being recommended to me by many people and I am absolutely blown away. They are little inflammation eaters. My aches and pains of a lifetime of athletics are mostly history.

Tried hard exercising for about 3 months just to see how far I go. Nope, got tired and I feel that with each passing day, I exert more effort just to get results I got the day before.

So no go. I go moderate though, personally. All with weights myself and I don't run.

I worked out constantly every day for years back in my early 20s.
On top of Weights and Circuit training combined with roadwork every day and including sparring sessions
at the local boxing gym. I'm 38 now and still put in good training sessions. I couldn't and certainly wouldn't consider training like that these days, certainly not for long periods anyway.

Though back then I was super fit, my resting heart was somewhere in the early 30s.
At the best of times my muscles felt raw but my recovery was incredible.

There's an old saying about the Candle! Like anything else you can overdo it and wind up paying for it.

I've found the best method is to combine both resistance and cardio and aerobic training on separate sessions. At least it then allows your body to fully recover.

So from my experience it can benefit you training intensely everyday but only in short bursts.

You need time to recover, even recovery drinks high in glutamine doesn't mean you should go out overloading the next day.

I'm a student competing in boxing having 4 timetables (Boxing, strength & conditioning, sparring and education) to juggle around. Thank god i'm spoilt and don't have to work. I have 2 off days in training wednesday and saturday, i'm suppose to do cardio on one of the days but i'm bad at seizing opportunitys and liketo be lazy.

Getting back to the point being 20 years old, still considered young. I struggle to keep my eyes open or back straight when i have to attend lectures or labs. My colleagues usually end up scanning me their work or doing my labwork for me! So yes you really do need rest between workouts. there are drawbacks. Personally if i'm on campus and not living out after a training session i go to the library and sleep for 2-3 hours! WIN (Y).

Being at the end of both spectrum's when I had hard labor jobs and I added hard weight lifting sessions, I was physically at my peak, I looked my best and I was strong. But i always felt weak.

Now that I have been working in offices I'm about 10 lbs heavier I work out 2 maybe 3 times a week, mainly martial arts classes, I lift a lot like normally, I have more energy though.

I think in the end you have to find a medium in between the two, work hard but give your body time to heal.

My fitness suffers dramatically when I don't give it time to recover properly. I notice a steep drop off in power only half way through my workout. I was biking between 14-26 miles 5 days a week, and my body let me know it wasn't cool with not getting any rest periods. Work your way up to training 5 days a week if that really is your desire, it will take time.

Have you noticed how much smaller the quads on these tour factory riders are these days?

I have been watching the Tour de France since I was a kid and I used to think they had bigger quads back then. I recently realized it was because I was such a skinny kid that I had that viewpoint. Take a look at some of the old footage ( 60's 70's 80's ) they were little guys back then too.

Another drawback to pushing too hard and not letting your body rest and recover is worn out joints, loose connective tissue and chronic tendonitis and a reduction in your fitness level if you let things get out of hand.

Like Warren Millar used to say in his movies... you only have so many bumps in your knees and when you run out of bumps you don't do bumps any more.

Which ones?

Teams in the race have guys that fill positions and those positions are favored by types of riders, climbers, sprinters and domestiques.

If you want the tour enough you will see riders change from year to year depending on what discipline they are focused more on.

Those big legs of the sprinters are a ability when you get to the hills, so they shed muscle and thus look smaller.

You could be noticing smaller legs due to less drug use and a more refined mindset as to what works the best, so you see less sprinters and more climbers.

Which is why the guy with the biggest legs never wins yellow, he gets green.

Side note: Ryder Hesjedal 2012 Giro d'Italia, first Canadian to win a Tour.

yes, excessive cortisol and stress hormones (and that means lower testosterone and growth hormone levels)

If you're going to train hard everyday, do one body-part per day.

Your muscles need a few days to recover and rebuild.

Also, in my experience, short intense training sessions are better for you then long ones
(ex: long distance running vs. sprinting)

Short intense training boost testosterone and growth hormone levels.

You hear a lot about the dangers of overtraining. No chance of me overtraining BTW; I'm lazy as a cat.

But men used to do demanding physical work - farming, fishing, logging, mining - day in and day out. I'm old enough to remember how strong some farmhands got, heavy lifting from dawn till dusk.

We probably have more capacity to train hard every day than we think.

I'm fairly certain the quads are somewhat smaller than in Lemond's day.I read an expose in Cycling mag I think it was....daily adjustments from the team doc....

I've run 90% of the days for the last 40 years. Also pushups and chinups most days. The gym a couple times a week for decades.

Zero issues. No muscle or joint pain.

However, I can't say I train 'hard'.

All my cardio vascular health tests are excellent for my age. This is probably from running and a vegetarian diet. I've always assumed that good circulation keeps our muscle, tendon, etc. tissue healthy. Little tears and pulls heal themselves before we even notice.

I used to do construction work. Building homes, concrete, roofing, etc. Power-lifting actually helped me do that stuff. The stronger I was, the less effort it took to lift stuff and the more endurance I had, because it took less effort. I don't do construction anymore. However I still train and do weight-lifting. I do weight training until failure, so I can not work the same muscles each day. When I do cardio, I do high intensity interval training, so I can't do that everyday either.
Doing physical work is not the same thing as weight lifting (although similar). Some people can work hard all day long but can't lift a lot of weights in the gym, and some bodybuilders or weight-lifters can't use their muscles all day like the people who do physical work can.
