| | Checking out the competitionPage 1 of 4 (1, 2, 3, 4) | I'm quite new to POF and very new to forums. Be gentle with me.
Hello. :)
Do you look at profiles of other women (if you're a straight woman) or other men (if you're a straight man)? (Follow this logic to its obvious conclusion if you're gay, and apply it to your own circumstances.)
Is this kind of behaviour frowned upon in the dating site world?
I just wondered because I do, and assumed everyone else would. (I mean, surely everyone is as nosy as I am, right?)
And quite often I think"wow, you sound great. I'd love to be friends with you", and wish I dared message them with that sentiment. I don't, obviously, because I expect people would think I was Single White Female woman or just plain weird.
Happily, I don't need to message anyone now for them to come to that conclusion as I've just revealed it here instead.

| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 7:17:52 AM | I have made great friends with other women online, by just thinking the same thing ("I would be friends with you, if I lived nearer", that sort of thing) although thats been through forum postings (not this forum as I am relatively new). I do have the odd sneaky look at female profiles when I want to see who is in my locale.. some of them I know, or went to school with. I don't really care if its frowned on though. Afterall, this is a public site, so any Tom, Harry or Mary can have a look.
Edit: Not sure how your second paragraph is on topic LordS.

| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 7:40:01 AM | I think looking at other girls photos is the problem for me. My first lot of photos were from work and a couple of quiet and social occasions and my profile was passed on by, I am really a bit of a plain jane. Put on a couple from a dancing/modeling gig and slightly suggestive, mail in overdrive but the wrong sort. Mixture of both it is still the smut and innuendo that comes through. I am not brave enough to mail men so I will be leaving the site as I either don't stand out or I attract the wrong attention. | |
|
| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 7:53:18 AM | Oh dear oh dear LordS.. you do rattle on so. Where did my post say I had made "many" friends? I have made good friends with a few women who I talk to online as they live a long way away. They in no way replace my real friends who I've known since Middle School or earlier. There are people I would not have met otherwise (and yes, I have met some in real life). I only have 56 people on facebook who are real friends and family, so I can rest in my bed tonight knowing I'm not a galoot. I also know you don't care :)
Yawn.. predictable response from LordS again..

| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 7:59:53 AM | I think you absolutely should be checking out the competition so that you (in a general sense, not you particularly LSV) can differentiate yourself from the shoals of other fish with bubbly personalities who are just as comfortable curling up on the sofa with a DVD and a glass of wine as they are sky-diving. Oh and, for some reason, there's lot who love motorcycling and/or live on a houseboat - seriously - you need somewhere more eccentric to live if you want to stand out :O)
So, yes - make sure your USP is a USP and not the same as everyone elses (else's?).

| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 8:05:43 AM | Lord S, I fear that if I mailed people with "Hello. I'd really like to be your cyber acquaintance", I would sound too much like Ford Prefect for most people, despite gaining the satisfaction of possibly being more lexically accurate, and then be branded both a stalker AND a geek.
GBS never considered that, did he? Hm?
|
| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 8:13:51 AM | I wouldn't, because it's of no interest to me what other blokes have on their profiles.
I've set mine out, the way I want it to.
I'd feel like a bit of a d1ckhead if I got ideas of what I should/shouldn't say, based on the profiles of other chaps.

| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 8:15:38 AM | well DONNASOSEXY i have just check your profile , your pic,s are quiet nice ! | Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 8:19:19 AM | Yeah, OP., being new to all this myself, I too, looked to see "how it was being done" by my contemporaries. This led me to believe that a shirtless picture was mandatory.

Msg 4, please don't delete your profile, until I have printed and laminated it.
I hid my own profile, and hid my pictures, when it was brought to my attention, that a number of ladies were using it to release those post-coital endorphins which aid sleep. I felt so soiled.

| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 8:43:38 AM | | Like she was ever going to be anything other than a fake anyway....This place is full of em. I pity all the poor saps on here who have wasted time messaging that profile. | |
|
| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 8:44:15 AM | Lord Snipe you who damns people who use Facebook sit here "talking" to fake profiles........oh wait maybe you are one yourself, I don't recall seeing you around Surbiton with that fuzzy photo of yours.
At least on Facebook if you are selective in how you use it and who you add, you know the people are real............

| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 8:48:02 AM | I have looked at some poster's from the forums, including women's, profiles, out of interest/nosiness nosyness noseyness.. How the heck do you spell that??
No-one has ever commented on it before so either they don't care or haven't noticed
If I look at the who viewed me feature I have never noticed another woman, but it wouldn't bother me if I did.
As for making female friends, sometimes I don't have enough time or make enough time for the RL female friends I have so don't think it's likely, but never say never!

Try checking around Limerick in Ireland. But you may not recognize him because apparently he is one year younger over there. http://dating.irishtimes.com/profile.cfm?member=Dopple

| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 9:06:08 AM | That's interesting, best-foot-foward. I wonder if they don't show up?
Let's do an experiment: I've just looked at your profile. Does it show in your 'who viewed me' whatsit?
(Not that it actually matters. I'm just curious.)
|
| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 9:09:14 AM | | I check out other women on here but only if they have posted something interesting or completely absurd, I just like to have a nosey at the person behind the post. | |
|
| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 9:11:11 AM | Lady Sybil - no I can't see that you viewed me! Interesting....
I will have a look at your profile, tell me if you can see that I viewed you
edit - UB40?? They're great
Rat in mi kitchen wat I'm a gonna do
C'mon...
Cinderfreakinella - I just looked at your profile, not anonymously though - I think POF have set it so you can't see?? Why would they do that?
Lady Sybil, you mean we are not best friends forever now? Aww, you could've let me down a bit more gently than that

|
| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 9:12:12 AM | | Best foot forward...well I know women look at me because they message me, but they never appear in my viewed me section, they must look anonymously...like a lot of men do | |
|
| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 9:15:46 AM | Best Foot Forward - nope!
Well this is good news. We can be as nosy as we like and NO-ONE WILL EVER KNOW.
At least they wouldn't have known had I not started this thread. Damn.
Also, Best Foot Forward, I'm going to call you by your initials now because you're BFF then. Not that I'm desperate for friends or anything. Honest.
Cinderfreakinella - ooh, do they? Just for a chat, like?
|
| Checking out the competition Posted: 6/1/2012 9:15:53 AM | | I did look over my brother's shoulder a couple of times when he was browsing...so I have seen some of the "comopetition" | |
