I personally think that the movies released then, was so MUCH BETTER than the ones that are being released now.

What do you think?

Movies like Tron, ET, Poltergeist, Blade Runner, Officer and a Gentleman, Wraith of Khan and The World According to Garp made it a year of movies to remember.

What do you think? 2012 or 1982?

Hollywood has run out of original ideas. Everything today is a remake of a classic movie. And since most people prefer an original classic, I think they like the old movies more.

Oldies for sure. The past films music literatures etc..though present modern day ones a few are alright just like there are some not so good old ones.I don't quite like how for certain ones there are remakes or'new' prequels/sequels etc..they are not very well. There's plenty of creativity &everyone likes & dislikes &even indifference.
Me..I still remember MyGirl LilRascals Bugsby CrazyMoon CryBaby MilleniumDancer RollerCoaster etc..&some maybe not very old yet have that sense yet. Then theres too making games become movies..it can work.I liked Mario Bros for some things..&I liked Yoshi.Wonder if Kirby will become a movie..& combining a tvshow into a movie. Old tvseries into modern movie.. or whichever. Its really about the work &effort put into it by every one &the matters. Then its Art that maybe has negatives but again thats life. Its history.Which reminds me of BenHur.&the movie where they are underwater &attacked by a giant octopus &then stranded on land &attacked by giant shellfish or is that one another movie.
So..I guess I'm a bit of both old & now.Just like the good old times better.Love Oriental ones.
&Etcs ToBCont
Of course I never like scary sorts however only..there is a rare lil bit like FifthSense to The Others those are pretty good.I also recall Frogs MonkeyShine Cujo..
Also when films are made from books..or whatnot..sometimes even throughout there are parts that are not good, they don't keep to the story &the likes.Take Golden Compass..
Then theres old movies that are not fine but the music is lovely or actors are faulty &this &that..

ET the actual movie where it isn't touched up on etc was good but apparently if you don't have that one..well didn't whomever edit it somewhere near the ending when the children are on their bicycles &policeofficers draw out their guns-that its no longer there..have not viewed that one, but why do ppl do that.Take Annie as well..the'new one'.
Oh Im not sure if these are also from the Year1982but how about the Labyrinthe,Flight of the Navigator,Gremlins,Tremors, RogerRabbit,to name some..& Theres others but cant recall their info i.e names actresses producers etc but one is of BigFoot &a family hits him on their trip &take him in &then save him from a foolish hunter. Another is of a man who dies but becomes a cartoon &goes into paintings..
Its a bit hard to find such classics/originals &whatever..& some are just not made into dvds or no longer distributed.. anywhere.
Its good though that like plays are in movie form now.Its not the same of course.
I still remember as well Beverly Hill Troops,Beverly HillBillies,Brady Bunch(Both Series &Movies)
now they were funny &sweet.
Love too from that period/era genre was more enthralling.
of course then there is Babes In ToyLand that is not exactly a good movie &shouldnt be ever redone unless one can make it totally better.
Love MotherNature ones too. Benji..&to childhood movies too.

I think Society is changing.

Yes, society is changing, but that doesn't take away the fact that movies were better pre-2000s. I'd personally say that the mass majority of movies all around the world crashed in quality in the 1990s. They reached their peak in the '50s and again in the '80s. That isn't to say all other movies are bad.

I, for one, have a specific take on special effects in movies. As a 3D computer animator, specializing in digital art and graphics, I have been concerned (after the 1990s) that the film industries abuse modern technology to pump out (although impressive) 3D effects, such as the alien characters + clones in Star Wars: Clone Wars, the Transformers in the Michael Bay movies, the effects in Tron: Legacy, etc., when they just as well could have produced realistic physical scale models, puppets and robotics (not the cheesy stuff in the 1940s, '50s, but rather the excellently integrated ones as in the '80s-'90s, Alien, Jurassic Park...). What has happened here is production companies sacrifice time and quality for cheap labor (yes, computer animation in India is cheap-o) and money.

This could be said about any other aspect of film; take music. An acquaintance was just telling me and my friend that the music in a certain movie (Tangled) could have been pushed much further to the "classic" quality that old Disney movies used to produce. I haven't seen Tangled myself, so I don't know what she's referring to exactly, but I feel the same goes for many of today's movies; the film scores aren't always tailored to the scenes, or when they are, they tend to lack that certain something (music terms are not my forté). They certainly tend to lack a "timeless" appeal and show a result of our cheap-budget times. (At the same time, I could very well argue for many well-composed modern sound tracks.)

Not to mention that just about any movie nowadays looks to be filmed for an audience with ADHD... Sound effects everywhere... Camera angles, cuts, movements as swift as you can say, "what" ... And of course: storyline repeats, repeats, repeats.

Pink Floyd The Wall
Forbidden Zone
Basket Case
Slumber Party Massacre
Sword And The Sorcerer
Time Masters
Liquid Sky
White Dog
Pieces
New York Ripper
The Plague Dogs
Android
Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains
Turkey Shoot

If I had to pick a decade that I prefer over the 80's....the 70's, it contains some of my favorite films in comedy, action, scifi, and horror. And from the Golden Age, the 1930's is the best.

But there are still excellent films being made today, you just need to look outside of Hollywood mainstream, sure if all you look at is what is getting released in the American franchise cinemas you'll mainly see remakes, reboots, sequels, prequels....though a few excellent films do make it into the mainstream here and there(like Winter's Bone), you have to go to the Indie houses, festivals, and non-American films.

I am a HUGE fan of the Thing. It is, at the same time, one of the most atmospheric, yet bloody disgusting movies of all time.

However, I am a horror fan geek. I was aiming to show a list that was more "mainstream".

Here's one for you The Hand starring Michael Caine.
The first half was brilliant then deteriorated quickly thereafter but was almost worth it.

I know this is a little off topic but, I was listening to the commentary and I found out that the whole "Thing" was an allegory for "AIDS", that made the whole "blood test" in the petri dish seem much cooler. Good stuff.

I used to watch movies all the time back then at the theatre for the simple fact that my cousins ran one and I got to watch from the projection room. I havn't seen many new movies, but they've made crap since the beginning, it's just nowadays they have far more people doing it. As for 82 though, The Thing would have been my favourite. Followed by Firefox, Porkys and of course Pink Floyd: The Wall. I think Tex and Conan too, but maybe not.

Tv was pretty bloody good as well in 82...music was still music...cars were still cars....women had figures, politicians had credibility if they wanted it and newspapers had independance if they wished.
