ok, it is not a requirement to go to exceptional effort for a first date. suppose, however, that the person arrives with EXCEPTIONALLY DIRTY FINGERNAILS. would you take this to be an indication of disrespect that they hadnt even washed their hands?

It depends on what their profession is, if the guy's a mechanic it's hard to get their hands completely clean looking. If the guy has a desk job......YUK!

^^^^l Love the screeen name.. OMG too funny. anyway yeah dirty fingernails on a first date are really very distracting. I only had one guy do this and I did overlook it because he worked with oil. But it was very distracting.

That screen name got my attention too, hysterical - LOL.

I'll have to go with what he does for a living. My guy works with cars all week long, dealing with mechanic work, collision, custom paint etc - I know he's clean, I've watched him scrub his hands many times - but that type of work (or similar) makes it tough to stay spotless for those women who have an issue with it.

I'd rather have that than white collar with a manicure - but I like that trade thing. So for me (within reason) it comes with the territory. Maybe she should find out the story first?

I gather you are asking because you are in construction?

If that is the case, then the woman should understand.

Just wash up the best you can, and make sure your nails are short.

I work on cars for a living. So getting the fingernails clean is an extreme chore. They do get stained and makes it hard to keep clean. My last date got a little upset about how dirty they were. She kept telling me to get those dirty fingers out of my nose. I had no idea that my fingernails were such a turn off.

OP, are you asking because your nails were dirty or because your date's nails were dirty?

There are substances that stain skin and fingernails because they're porous. There's only so much you can remove with washing, scrubbing....if you've ever stained furniture...ugh. There are some things that don't lend themselves well to using gloves.

Yes, if the guy's nails are filthy it would be a turn off. I wouldn't assume that they were intending to disrespect. I think it would indicate that they were use to it and were oblivious.

Great profile by the way.

Yep...depends on his profession. Usually mechanics, factory workers, coal miners, etc can get away with it in my book. Manly man hands...and men who work are a plus!!

Seems to me that dirty fingernails are not permanent. Sometimes, a guy has to do some honest work and the fingernails show it. That doesn't mean they are that way all the time.

would you take this to be an indication of disrespect that they hadnt even washed their hands?

This was actually something my grandmother used to talk about when dating.
She always told my mother, aunts, uncles, when they were kids, (and ultimately my sister and I) to never date someone with dirty fingernails.
It showed a lack of hygiene, and respect. Not to mention indicative of a lower "class" than she wanted hanging around her children.

But "dates" back then were usually set up a long time in advance with suitable families so someone could show up having made exceptional effort to make sure their appearance and hygiene were in no way odious or disrespectful to their date or host. There was greater emphasis on social rule conformity conveyed by image then.

IMO, or what I want to do is, utilize whatever resource at your disposal to make yourself as seemingly "sterile" as possible in order that they pay attention to your face and general gestures more than any specific part of you.
IMO the majority of what you do to present yourself should ultimately be background noise they notice but to which they pay no real attention.

Because today, it doesn't really matter. No matter what you do you have a 50/50 chance they will take something and turn it negative if they want to.
Dirty fingernails? "Eww gross" or "I like a man that works with his hands, it's honest."
Clean fingernails? "He's a pretty sissy metrosexual boy, he has nicer fingernails than I do," or, "he's clean."
But more than likely clean fingernails = not noticed, it's just assumed (Unless of course they always have dirty fingernails too), because dirt or discoloration will draw the eye since it's abnormal.
Which do you notice more? Short french manicured nails? Clear with white tips? Or when they are black or maroon 4 inch nails with a high gloss, with parrots and rainbows painted on them, and a ring through the end of their pinkie fingernail?

As someone who owned an auto shop. I found that if I put hand cream before a dirty job it would be easier to wash my hands clean. I also got all my guys to wear gloves use a dish washing spong to scrab my hands and they came out mostly very clean.. one of the guys said his wife realy liked it that his hands were smooth now.

With all of the GOOD HAND CLEANING soaps (like Fast Orange) .. there is NO excuse for that. ESPECIALLY on a first date. Now if this date was at his shop ...... and you brought over a couple of pizzas .. OK then.
