Church Policy dictates Certain Medical Procedures - your thoughtsPage 1 of 1

Patients at the $360 Million PUBLIC hospital planned for Midland in Perth’s Eastern Suburbs, will have to go into a DAY surgery clinic located on site – if they want contraception procedures such as vasectomies performed. The hospital will not be providing these types of services.
The WA State Government confirmed the plan after awarding a $5 billion contract over 23 years to a Catholic health service provider St John of God, which refuses to provide sterilisation and contraception procedures on religious grounds at the actual hospital.
St John of God will build and run the 307 bed PUBLIC hospital – which will be funded by both the State/Federal Governments
AMA WA president Richard Choong welcomed the decision but asked “So what happens when a young woman rocks up at 10pm at nite, into the ER of the hospital seeking emergency contraception – to be used strait away - what are her options as the ER will refuse her treatment ?”

Below is a published comment appearing into todays issue of the “Western Australian” newspaper by Medical Editor, Cathy O’Leary.

“The State Government clearly wants to appease critics of its decision to allow the Catholic-run health group St John of God to set rules at its new Midland hospital. But it has not been able to shrug off that awkward question - is it right for religious beliefs to dictate what medical treatments are provided, and how, in a publicly funded hospital? The Government has at least addressed the first part - contraception treatments such as vasectomies will be provided at the hospital, just not by St John of God Health Care. The Government says the treatments will not be provided by the hospital itself.

Already doctors are asking what happens when a woman asks questions about contraception - at what point does she have to be referred to "the other service"?
For a major Government hospital due to open in 2015, it seems remarkable that a vasectomy or hysterectomy for family planning reasons could be viewed as anything other than mainstream health care.
St John of God is one of Australia's most competent and respected health care providers and has the right to set the rules.

But at a public hospital in a secular society, those rules should not apply, no matter how much they are sugar-coated.”

So how do you feel about Church policy dictating, what medical procedure you can or cannot have performed at a PUBLIC and government funded facility…..?

"St John of God is one of Australia's most competent and respected health care providers and has the right to set the rules." No they don't. They have the responsibility to provide a defined standard and range of healthcare services for the fee they're paid by their principal, in this case the WA State Government. The tender document should have stated clearly that the successful contractor be willing to provide all services to all patients at all times.

So a Jewish guy walks into a hospital..........

The Catholics get involved in health care as a. they are the only people with any money and b. its another way they can force their doctrine.

Perhaps it should be billed as a Catholic Hospital so they can all go there and the rest of us can go to the 'heathens health care' down the road.

Im a hard nosed aetheist, religion shouldnt come into any health care. So a woman attends the hospital with a medical requirement that she has a hysterectormy and no other reason. Are they going to do the proceedure?

Religious mine field is all I can see!

I think if the Catholics are providing the service they should get to say what services they provide. Like its legal to have an abortion but not compulsory for all doctors to perform the termination if they feel strongly about it and dont want to, they just refer you on.

With emergency contraception you've got 72 hours, I think, so you're not limited by who you can see at 10pm at night and I would be highly surprised if they didn't have some protocols in place to deal with any and all situations that might arise.

Im seriously over this religion crap in a big way. Last time I looked, religion was an option, not compulsory. So what right does any church have to tell me what I can and can't do...with both my body and my life.

which will be funded by both the State/Federal Governments

You can be sure as shit the catholic church wouldn't even be involved in this project, if they didn't see it as a vast money spinner. In my opinion, unless the church are paying for the project, the running of it and everything else involved in it, then they should not be able to dictate what is and isn't appropriate medical treatment, based on their totally outdated religious ideas.
F*cking hate all religion in a big way......im the type to marry a lesbian just to piss them off....except thats not allowed either because they don't approve.
Stick...bum......seriously this is 2012....time the church grew up.

Hilly I'm not sure, but I think reading between the lines you're not overly enamored of the church. Is that right or am I way off? It's hard to tell.

Which bit of the church don't you like? Is it the regressive brainwashing, the self-serving hypocrisy or the parasitic exploitation of the gullible? I'm just curious is all.

Edit: Oops sorry tinapenny, I forgot. Just pretend we're only talking about the Catholic church, ok?

I cant stand organised religion either, just like Hilly I would also marry a lesbian just to piss them off....

but this is what happens when govt. and the church jump in bed together.
Its not St Johns hospitals fault the WA government tried to be pennywise / pound stupid.

they should keep public services and utility's in public ownership... then we wouldn't have to talk to poeple in New Delhi about our telstra account's
