Daughter not well after 22 hr flight and a month away.Page 1 of 1
My 21 y.o daughter has just returned (4 days ago) from her first overseas trip......her first plane trip too.

We live in Australia and she flew to England for a month. Was a 22 hour flight and 9 hours time difference.

Arriving in England she didnt feel too Jet lagged and was on a high the entire time, seing as much as she could.
Now that she's come home she's really struggling. She can't stop crying, she sleeps long hours and complains of a wierd "floating up and down" sensation in her head fairly regularly.

I've never been overseas and dont know anyone who's been overseas for longer than 2 weeks, so I need some advice please.

Is what she's experiencing relatively normal? How long may she feel like this? Thanks for any input. xx

Ask a doctor.

Seriously, even if you get a dozen replies here telling you it's normal and will last for x weeks, she should still seek medical advice from a qualified practitioner.

Thankyou, gcdeb. I was thinking the same thing.

Its so out of character for her to be so teary and this sensation she keeps feeling worries me. She doesn't live with me and she just told me today.

I'll take her to the doctor tomorrow. Thanks again. xx

Jet lag affects different people, in different ways. But you can't risk dismissing this as jet lag because you aren't qualified to determine that. Get her checked. Perhaps you are about to become a grandparent ! <- You see my point - it might be connected to her trip but equally it may not be. Only one way to be sure and that's by having her checked out by a professional doctor rather then a bunch of us with access to Google and high opinions.

I agree with the other posts, your daughter should see a doctor. This type of travel can mess up her circadian rhythms (bio clock) - this can lead to fatigue and depression. It can some times takes more than 4 days to get over. When I've traveled to Asia for work, I often go a week early...just so I can be physically balanced before I need to work. Ask her doctor about using Melatonin for a week or so.

Thanks, forum friends. I did a thread search by typing "Jet Lag." Its an old thread and a couple of posters also mentioned Melatonin.

Yep! You're right. Never mind google. Similar stories are welcomed by others, of course, for discussion purposes as I've requested and very much appreciate.

However, I now have full intentions of taking my dear daughter to a doctor tomorrow considering her depressive state and chronic fatigue...and yes...also her body clock...:)

Thanks so much again. You've been great. xx

I don't know how long ago she went to London. But she may be dealing with the impact of the jet lag from TWO flights if they are close together. So her responses might be more intense. Good luck.

My daughter came home to Australia 5 days ago. She was in England for a month and during that time travelled to Scotland and Wales aswell. She's never flown before.

All I could think of to advise her was to drink plenty of water and walk around the plane as much as possible. Her flight out was care free and had two stop overs. However, her return flight wasn't so good.

One stop over and hours of turbulance forcing everyone, crew included, confined to their seats. So of course, for quite some time no food or drinks were served and no walking around the plane. Her feet swelled up terribly.

Anyway, thanks again, friends, for your advice and thoughts and I'll be sure to take her to the doctor today and make sure she tells him everything. xx

Did they spray inside the plane before she landed?

Some flights use an insecticide to de-bug the cabin area before landing in AUS and she could be feeling the effects of that.

To be honest, Aristotle, I wasn't aware of such spraying. Thankyou for your concern.

Anyway, good news from her doctor. Blood pressure normal, blood tests normal, a basic Psych analysis showed fatigue and anxiety. Doctor prescribed lots of sleep, TLC, eating well and returning to work promptly to establish "normality" again after her exciting month away. I see her everyday and she's doing well.

That's great news Holly. At least you have peace of mind now that there isn't a medical reason for how she's feeling (apart from the tiredness).

Hey Holly,
I spent a month in Spain and an 18 hour flight from Albuquerque New Mexico to Madrid and back again. I was depressed for a while and had flash backs about the travel time. I didn't have much jet leg in Spain but on the return I was exhausted, and I was sluggish. It lasted from August to end of Sept. before I felt better. Your doctor is right, plenty of sleep, care, and talking about the trip adventures. My cousin felt the same after her return from Aussie land in fact she was deeply depressed but I was around with another cousin whom had been over seas so we were able to share and provided support for her too.

A big thankyou, Miss_ing, for your input.

I've had no experience with overseas travel nor, like I said, do I know anyone who's been overseas for longer than 2 weeks so I had nothing to base any opinions on. Nice to know that what she experienced and is still experiencing, to a degree, is normal. A shame really, isn't it, to feel depressed after an exciting trip away. :(

I'm continuing to stay close to her and see her through this. She's back at work now. She tells me I'm fussing too much, but thats what mothers do, right?

Yes Holly, mothers have the right to fuss. She will find out in a couple of years about the fussing. But be there for her even when she wants to close up and hide. She will be moody because nothing is as good as "over there." Let her talk it out. Support, support and talking a lot of it. It will eventually wind down.

If you exist on adrenaline and an excited "high", when it's over your endorphins drop to really low levels, which makes you moody, sad, sluggish-- like going through withdrawals.
It's only been 4 days since her return. Give it time!
