Coast to Coast Walk - EnglandPage 1 of 1
Wondering if anybody has done this. My boyfriend and I are going in August, and I have a few questions.

I'd like to know what kind of weather to expect, both in terms of rain and temperatures, how often we can expect laundry facilities, how hard it is to navigate, whether maps or GPS is better, and if maps, which.

Thanks everybody!

I would say expect a lot of rain. Seriously, the only reason I am posting is to remind you to walk ahead of your boyfriend (You know why).

I've done this walk a couple of times East to West. I used Ordnance Survey strip maps http://www.walkingplaces.co.uk/c2c/osmaps.htm
It's well signposted and a well trodden route so you'll meet plenty of people along the way. I'm not sure about laundry facilities. It depends on what you're doing for accommodation. B&B or camping? You could always Google 'Laundrettes' for the towns along the route.
Feel free to ask for more information.

While I haven't done that walk trip.(I'll take the train or the tube). Laundry isn't a problem as there are washiterias everywhere. They are usely on the back streets near "Ladbrokes" or some other bet shop.

Expect a lot of traffic, August is when most of the UK is on holiday.
Stay off the Main roads, some of them don't allow foot traffic.
The smaller towns are the best ones to rest overnight in.
Do sample the local food, ask the locals where they go to eat.

Finally, an umbrella is a good idea, so is rain gear.

Fortunately, the C2C Walk doesn't involve following any main roads.

There are no large towns along this route.

Wainwright did this West to East when he devised it. You don't say whether you are intending to use a tent or a variety of lodgings? The best way is a combination of both and join the YHA. There is a very helpful website dedicated to the walk at www.coast2coast.co.uk which gives lots of information. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for responding.

We're going West to East and staying at hotels and B&Bs. We have OS maps now and the Henry Stedman book, and I also downloaded the OS maps in a GPS device and will be putting in waypoints. I'm just nervous about the navigation because I've never done this long a hike before and am used to hiking in the US where everything is usually well blazed.

Hopefully, we won't get lost too permanently.

Getting really excited. Only two weeks now.

you will definitely enjoy it.. the true beauty is outside the big cities and away from rat race.. people are so lax.. i had hiked u.s as well but nothing like UK.. dont forget to try the locals food and bring face cloth!! for some reason b&b dont supply them.. one suggestion so that u can catch up all the beautiful things u see. dont spend so much time taking pics.. otherwise u wont never make it the other end..memories to remember are the best.. altho bring atleast 2 cameras.. Have fun and enjoy!!!

That sounds so fun! I would agree spend the extra money and buy the best and most comfortable rain gear that you can afford. You will have it on a lot.

Watch the movie American Werewolf in London, so you know to stay on the road at night!! 1981....

You will love it, navigation is by waysigns and strip maps and looking for the sun, faceing you in the morning, to your right at midday and going behind you in the late afternoon. You will meet plenty of lovely people and taste the delights of good old English beer in the lovely pubs at night, stay on there to eat as well.
If you see a hill infront of you, you'll be going up it, no doubt about that and most B&B's will do a wash for you for a couple of quid.

Hey, everybody, and thanks for all the helpful suggestions.

WE DID IT!

Finished on Friday in 13 days.

It was a great experience, and I'm only beginning to digest it all.

The weather was fantastic for the most part, and we have amazing pictures. To give us the real experience, we did have spectacular head winds and horizontal rain those long 3.5 hours trudging up the railroad track to The Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge, and we did arrive there exactly as Henry Stedman suggests in his excellent book like a bunch of extras from a George Romero Zombie movie.

While my aerobic fitness and muscle strength improved after the first few days, my feet and ankles let me down, unfortunately, and I learned what it is like to walk 46 miles in two days with Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.

Still, I'm so glad I didn't give up. After a few days of icing, the pain is almost forgotten now, our names are in the book at the Bay Hotel, and I will never forget this amazing experience.

That's a great accomplishment, LilliMarleen! It says a lot when two people are able to accomplish what you and your man did, and do so without being at each other's throats.
