I'm a 35yrs old man and I've always whated to go to disneyland as a child. I am taking my 2 boys 14 and 17 to southern california in late july early august. I think about disneyland and knottsberry farm plus a trip to Univisal studios. And I think about taking HWY 101 back( I from Washington). I was going to take I5 down and go to the House of Mystery and hit the Shasta Cave on the way down. Any thing I should not miss on the way there or back?

Aah, the redwoods are great! I lived there for a few years and it just makes you feel sooo small.

My boys are the same ages as your boys. Your boys will love this trip. I live in SoCal and have spent a lot of time in the Cental Coast and Humboldt areas as well because my daughter attended HSU. Disneyland- DON'T GO on a Saturday or Sunday, just don't. It's all good there, but don't miss Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, Star Tours, The Matterhorn, Thunder Mountain, and The Hollywood Tower of Terror (California Adventure). Universal- Mummy, Backlot Tour, Transformers.

On your way back, many options: Leo Carillo beach & ask around till you find the sea cave. Ventura, Santa Barbara, Solvang, Morro Bay, Hearst Castle, Big Sur, Santa Cruz, Alcatraz, a lighthouse or two. You would run out of time with my full list.

As Scifichichichy said, Redwoods. Forget "Mystery Spots" and other touristy schlock, go for Avenue of the Giants, Prairie Creek Redwoods SP, explore Fern Canyon, Jedediah Smith SP, see the seastacks at Trinidad cove, the little hippie town of Arcata, grab a microbrew and amazing onion rings at the Six Rivers Brewery/restaurant in McKinleyville, CA.

Have a great trip!

Did you mean the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose?? It's a bit eclectic and interesting for grown-ups, but I'm not sure teenage boys would be into it. Mine would hate me forever if I took them there.

I just thought of something really cool inside Mt. Lassen National Park on your way down. "Bumpass Hell", it's a short hike off the main park road. Amazing!

This thread might get more ideas/responses if you transfer it over to the California forum, or post over there as well. :)
