| | Health effects of coffeePage 1 of 2 (1, 2) | I seem to can't live without coffee. I tried to once...it didn't work out well for anyone involved. Yes I am trying to cut back to two cups in the morning but it has been hard.
This is a question for both men and women: What are your feelings of the health effects of coffee? In moderation it’s fine in my view.
Many studies have examined the health effects of coffee, and whether the overall effects of coffee consumption are positive or negative has been widely disputed. The method of brewing coffee has been found to be important to its health effects. For instance, preparing coffee in a French press leaves more oils in the drink compared with coffee prepared with paper coffee filter. This might raise the drinker's level of "bad cholesterol." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee
The health effects of coffee have been studied to determine how coffee drinking affects humans. Coffee contains several compounds which are known to affect human body chemistry. The coffee bean itself contains chemicals which are mild psychotropics for humans as a defense mechanism of the Coffea plant. These chemicals are toxic in large doses, or even in their normal amount when consumed by many creatures which may otherwise have threatened the beans in the wild. Coffee contains caffeine, which acts as a stimulant. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_effects_of_coffee

I seem to can't live without coffee. I tried to once...it didn't work out well for anyone involved. Yes I am trying to cut back to two cups in the morning but it has been hard. That is because you are addicted to one of the most powerful drugs know to man.

| Health effects of coffee Posted: 6/27/2012 5:04:07 PM | when I realize I've become addicted to coffee and my normal 1-cup-a-morning limit has been stretched out to sipping the stuff all day long ... I just stop cold turkey ... I suffer thru the HORRIBLE headaches for about a week ...
then, like any good addict, I SLOWLY slip back into 1/2 a cup in the morning ... then a full cup ...
currently, I stop after my 1st or sometimes a 2nd cup ... I know caffeine is a powerful chemical ... but coffee just tastes so GOOD!
so ...
should those of us who drink coffee check "yes" ... on the box "do you take drugs?" ...

| Health effects of coffee Posted: 6/27/2012 5:37:11 PM | | Green cofee bean extract has attracted some interest lately.Drinking coffee will also give you some effect, but the extract is more potent minus all the caffeine.Yes I like caffeine too.Chlorogenic acid is what they believe blunts blood sugar levels after eating....a good thing. | |

| Health effects of coffee Posted: 6/27/2012 5:47:58 PM | | Yep, I just have one cup in the morning, but if I don't, I will get a splitting headache at about 4 p.m. If that happens, I just pop a couple Excedrin. Knocks it right out, lol. | |

| Health effects of coffee Posted: 6/30/2012 1:33:34 PM | | No one can convince me of the "health benefits" of coffee until a way is found to effectively remove 100% of the caffeine. I'm not being a health nazi- you can all enjoy coffee if you want- so don't everybody jump on me at once, but caffeine is a physical addiction for countless coffee drinkers everywhere. Some are probably more sensitive to caffeine than others. I had to face this several years ago: I was working night shift, drinking coffee and having continuous headaches and bouts of overwhelming fatigue. I finally quit caffeine in all forms (including chocolate, sodas, teas) and the headaches eventually went away. And I had five months of caffeine withdrawal symptoms. My ex-husband recently told me he has been having severe headaches every weekend and every time he goes on vacation. The doctor could not find anything wrong with him. I suggested my ex either quit drinking coffee or match his average weekday consumption of a pot a day. He chose the latter and his headaches stopped. Wherever he goes he knows he must find coffee or face an excruciating headache. | |

| Health effects of coffee Posted: 6/30/2012 2:36:32 PM | | So we're addicted. Why fight it when it tastes so good in the morning? You need to have some vices. | |
|
| Health effects of coffee Posted: 7/2/2012 5:24:41 PM | I JUST ... as in within the last 2 minutes ... heard one of those blurbs on the news about how the caffeine in coffee has been found to be instrumental in preventing the deadly versions of skin cancer ... wow. never would have projected THAT one.
I agree that everyone is more sensitive to caffeine than others ...
but I also believe different people are more compatible with becoming addicted ... one of my doctors laughed at me at one point because I was fearful of taking a particular medication ... we've known each other in both a work-related way and also socially since about 1982 so we are aware of each other's limitations ... he said for me not to worry as I am simply NOT an addictive personality ... ok. good to know.

| Health effects of coffee Posted: 7/3/2012 11:43:02 AM | | I'm still not going to drink coffee. I still get some caffeine in my tea. | |
|
| Health effects of coffee Posted: 7/3/2012 3:12:32 PM | | I love coffee & drink it daily. If this is the worst thing I do, so be it. We all need something we enjoy...right? Add a little heavy cream, Stevia & good to go. Healthy? I am sure 10 studies will come up with 10 different opinions. | |
|
| Health effects of coffee Posted: 7/6/2012 9:45:25 AM | | I probably haven't been drinking coffee as long as some of you others, but sometimes I went in heavy. I drink it black too (with sugar). Only affects other than looking like I was on some other sort of drugs was probably crashing hard. Only time will tell what the long term drawbacks are, because though Ive cut back, I dont plan on stopping. | |

With a bit of honey...

| Health effects of coffee Posted: 7/9/2012 11:36:03 AM | Once my kids put two and two together, they figured out I was addicted to coffee. Then with puppy dog eyes, they asked I quit it. So, I did. This week will be a month that I've quit all forms of caffeine. EVERYTHING! Couldn't even have my yogurt because it was mocha flavored. Slept three days straight in the beginning and I still get headaches others spoke about. A friend who is an emergency doctor warns me it takes 2-6 months to detox the liver from a substance like caffeine. Well, dagnab it. If I've gone this far eliminating so much from my life, I'll make it! As time goes by, it gets easier and easier. When I've passed the six months mark, then I will decided if it was worth it all. If it's not, I'm running back to coffee with open arms! | |

| Health effects of coffee Posted: 7/9/2012 3:52:54 PM | Compared to the poor health habits many, many people live with and justify, the drinking of black coffee is relatively benign in my opinion.
Try this: give up sugar, meat, dairy, smoking, stress, refined foods, fast food, and drinking alcohol. Exercise on a daily basis and get fit... but keep drinking that coffee. Then you can quit the coffee after several months and you'll either feel a difference or you won't.
I've known a lot of people got real proud of themselves for giving up coffee but still indulge plenty of other dubious habits.
That said, coffee is pretty easy to kick, but to some of us so tasty it's hard to kick for good. ;)

| Health effects of coffee Posted: 7/9/2012 4:42:21 PM | Try this: give up sugar - there isn't even any in the house meat, - I'm carnivore... back off dairy, - keeping my greek yogurt, again... back off smoking, - both parents died from complications of smoking ... need I say more? stress, - I have kids.... once again, need I say more? refined foods, - I guess I shouldn't have had those nachos..opps fast food, - You'll catch me in a fast food place about once a....... year drinking alcohol. - accomplished wine drinker... touch it.. you die Exercise on a daily basis and get fit - exer.. what??? does chasing cubbies count? | |

| Health effects of coffee Posted: 7/9/2012 7:54:44 PM | Charminc, perhaps see a doc to make sure the headaches you're experiencing aren't migraines. Migraines can be treated pretty well these days without resorting to analgesics that cause rebound vascular headache.
It took me about five months to shake off all the caffeine effects. I still get an occasional migraine because I am prone to them, but far fewer than when I was drinking coffee and caffeinated beverages.
|
| Health effects of coffee Posted: 7/17/2012 11:14:55 PM | wow.. there is a lot of misinformed people in this thread.
do you like coffee? does it make you feel good while still allowing you to adequately rest and sleep at night?
-drink it in moderation, preferably from a certified organic bean since the coffee bean is one of the most heavily pesticides/ herbicided crops in the world. coffee has tons of antioxidants and has plenty of well-documented health benefits.
do you hate coffee? does it make you feel cracked out? do you hate the taste or hate the fact that you get coffee breath?
-don't drink it!
and yes, if you drink coffee everyday and one day just stop, of course you will have withdrawal symptoms just like with almost everything else you habitualize including timing of meals, TV, internet, cigs, etc.

| Health effects of coffee Posted: 7/21/2012 8:35:18 AM | Giving up stress? I wish. I am good at getting RID of stress, but my career (which I enjoy immensely) has some amount of stress with it.
Like the above poster says, I have NO trouble sleeping and I drink a little coffee almost every day. When I don't drink it, I don't get caffeine withdrawal symptoms... at least not yet.
