| | Women musicians? Play guitar?Page 1 of 1 | Looking in my area for women who are musically inclined, there don't seem to be a whole lot. Especially those who play guitar. Sure, there are a few, but most of them quite young.
What's with the lack of musicians of the feminine kind?

The younger generation gals don't have weird shit like this to deal with, they got treated equal! Cool for them (and us cool parents).
I play now and my fellow is learning.
Oh, and we got our bedrooms to play in, you guys got the garage. I'm still choked. lol.

| Women musicians? Play guitar? Posted: 6/29/2012 4:48:00 PM | | I don't know why there aren't more female musicians near you. I know a few but then I move in musical circles where I live. Women of my generation were not encouraged to be on stage playing anything other than a classical instrument in an orchestra. Playing in a rock band or similar was unusual and it was pretty obviously a male environment. Women like Suzy Quattro and Chrissie Hynde were symbols of a change. Guys do seem to be more able to push themselves to the forefront in music and can tend to dominate music sessions. I'm glad that women musicians have more opportunities now and are accepted on stage with the guys. There are probably women musicians near you that simply don't feel encouraged or welcomed and so spend their time in the audience. Perhaps you should talk to women at music events and find out whether they play. | |

| Women musicians? Play guitar? Posted: 6/29/2012 5:01:55 PM | My SO wonders the same and was thrilled to meet a fellow musician when we first began dating.
I'm not sure this offers any legitimate insight, but as a piano teacher, I do notice that the boys I teach have a little more gung-ho attitude. They seem to naturally think and explore outside of the box more often and want to play "cool" songs. They generally seem to make connections among songs that the girls don't, e.g. "Hey, this is the same chord we played in the other song." The girls tend to be less aggressive in asking for what they want, and follow the lesson books more happily. Of course there are always exceptions--I've had several girls who've broken the quiet stereotype. I've had both venture into the composition realm a little.
I wonder if it's a function of how the genders are socialized. Performing is taking a risk of public humiliation and rejection. In fact, very similar to being the first to make the first approach in dating. I wonder if the girls are conditioned to be more risk averse.

While I was thinking "I want that red guitar!"
The weird part is, some men are quite threatened when you get up and rock out. I heard one guy say that rock and roll was the last sanctuary of male dominance on the planet.

Iconoclast, I'm not sure why that'd be the case. I belong to several guitar forums and members have discussed it at length. Most of us seem to agree that we'd like mates who played, or at the very least had a passing/supportive interests. There are very few women on those forums.. unfortunately, they've been taken. I've found it somewhat hard to locate a woman with any amount of creativity or true passion for something, really. My ex wife was, about her FJ Cruiser (Mine is/was Porsches) but unfortunately the FJ led to meeting another man... which ended badly. D'oh.
I'd be thrilled to death to find someone who did more than "take piano lessons when she was a kid" or "has an X but can't play." My last GF had pics of her with guitars here. Come to find out...there was less than zero interest in them. Not sure how we went almost three years on that one.

| Women musicians? Play guitar? Posted: 6/29/2012 10:09:52 PM | Im actually past my guitar phase. I'm gettin old. I switched from black eyeliner to brown. (lol)
Since, I am one of the few brass players in my local scene, I do more recording than live performance these days. Plenty of guitarist to go around but there's far fewer brass players. Went thru a cello phase and now have come back full circle to my trumpet.
The deeper you go, you have to make a choice. I feel like I can't improve much if I scatter my interest. There are only so many hours in the day and my heart belongs to Bach.

| Women musicians? Play guitar? Posted: 6/30/2012 1:20:11 PM | | I learnt to compose and play electric bass, in my youth. Since taking on work in a specialized field and starting a family, I put my love for the arts on hold, until I became 30 and could not avoid writing creatively, amd finishing a first round of university study in writing. I hope to pick up where I left, again, since my son became recognizably talented in composing and playing several instruments. There are many talented women musicians, hopefully in your area - best wishes! | |

| Women musicians? Play guitar? Posted: 6/30/2012 2:20:03 PM | my experience is women have less inclination toward hobbies/activities in general, especially ones that involves lots of solitary time, like practicing an instrument. their focus is more on relationships. that means many girls will start deprioritizing their hobbies when they discover boys, and shove them further into the background when mates and kids arrive on the scene.
the hobbies/activities that have a better chance of hanging on are those are extensions of relationships, such as with mates/kids. or the ones that offer lots of group socializing - again, a relationship function.
in a way, that makes it puzzling that so few women are inclined toward the band model of creating music. there's such a powerful level of relating there, and so reinforcing because it's relating at the place of personal passion and joy.

Yes, it would be. Only 11 responses. Guess there aren't that many, after all.

| Women musicians? Play guitar? Posted: 7/4/2012 3:51:53 PM | Ya know, my Dad plays guitar. Actually alot of instruments but I could never really do it.
Then, last week I was looking up stuff online and up popped an ad for left handed guitars. I know, Im silly..but Im right handed so I never thought much about it til I did some research. Turns out I couldnt seem to get the jest of it from wanting to play left. See, when I was in grade school my first grade teacher hit me with a ruler until I learned to write right handed. For everything else *now that I consciously think about it) do everything else left handed. Thinking back at holding my Dad's guitar when he wasnt looking I held it backwards which for me seemed right. The only things I do right handed is language skills dealing with letters etc..like writing..typing etc.. but I even put my left shoe on first. I throw ball left I swing bat left..
I had an awful time with the piano until the teacher yelled me at me one day when my mom walked in. I didnt have to go back anymore. I never finished learning. Now years later this week I have been looking up left handed guitars for myself. Thought Id get a kinda cheaper one and see how it goes.
Wa thinking of this one to learn with. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Daisy-Rock-Wildwood-Short-Scale-36-Left-Handed-Acoustic-Guitar-Pink-Burst/15862638 I know its meant for younger girls.. but I thought its smaller and I wear a small glove for work and so I thought it might work????? Could ya help me out here..lol.. Id love advice.
Ive been looking up stuff on youtube. I didnt even realize that Hendrix was was a leftie. I mean I never really paid attention to how someone holds an instrument and then I thought well... pictures are sometime backwards so maybe for me the way they hold it looks right to me because its backwards in the picture?? Im hoping this info helps my inabilities because I just love music. Cant get enough of it.
Maybe that's why some chicks dont do music?? or maybe I can see the universe for what it really is???

For $189, you could get something quite a bit better. You might have a Guitar Center nearby? Fender is making some pretty good inexpensive Squier Strat and Telecasters these days, and they do carry the Daisy Rock stuff as well. And being electric, they're easier to play than acoustic...and louder! =) It looks to me like GC carries the same guitar, but $10 more. However, CG will price-match, and you're likely to get a better guitar from GC than Wal Mart. GC also usually has a pretty good selection of used instruments.
Here's a lefty http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-Stratocaster-Left-Handed-Electric-Guitar-104825443-i1393083.gc
Just need an amp, and you're ready to rock =)
Also, if you're really interested in starting up playing,. check out guitar forums as well. Tons of good info. "The Gear Page" is probably the largest.

| Women musicians? Play guitar? Posted: 7/5/2012 1:55:27 AM | Since you're short on responses and my wife is a pianist of the Classical variety, I'll toss my $.02 into the hat.
I have no doubt that there's more femme guitarists in your area than you know. Quite possibly, they have better things to do than do the "forum" thing. The young female guitarists may still be pursuing their passion/dream, while the more mature ones may be pursuing other avenues......possibly even raising a family.
And if they're real serious guitarists? Maybe they've just moved to one of the three major entertainment markets to improve their odds of success and stardom?

| Women musicians? Play guitar? Posted: 7/5/2012 7:06:29 AM | I've always been *very* interested in music; was never more than a dabbler as a musician though. I've played violin and piano at various points, but never took it very seriously. I took up guitar lessons in high school but quickly got distracted by horses and musicians. Practice sorta went into the toilet. Musicians tend to start young, be a whole lot more disciplined about it than I was, and then you have the whole "money for nothing/chicks for free" thing, so sure why wouldn't there be a lot more men guitar players?
I understand it's nice to be dating someone who shares your passion for whatever. Not sure why a woman being a guitarist would be so pivotal for you. If she has to be a guitarist, what's the next qualification... she has to play professionally? If she plays one lick of Fernando Sor she's out??

| Women musicians? Play guitar? Posted: 7/5/2012 7:16:17 AM | I've tried some guitar and piano and found that I lack any kind of musical talent :p Maybe when I'm done with the hell on Earth that is grad school, I'll give it a more honest shot.
As far as searching by interest, I've found that it's usually sort of a bust. I'm always looking for gamers and Redditors, and though few people mention these things on their profiles or among their list of interests, I've gotten quite a variety of messages from folks belonging to both camps. I know they're out there, but they're not disclosing openly. :p Mind you, there isn't the same sort of stigma attached to being a female musician as there is to being a male gamer.
All I can suggest is maybe amending your profile to say that you're looking for musical types (much as I kinda like the binary-- I managed to find a decoder, btw. :p) or meet women through music-focused groups that you belong to. You make a good point, though. Looking back on groups of musically-inclined folks that I've been privileged to call friends, an overwhelming majority of them have been male. Not sure why that might be, except that sometimes breaking into groups which are male-dominated can be intimidating for women, so they keep to themselves in those interests. Just a guess!

And I wouldn't discount the youngsters. I have a couple of Musician's Institute friends, one in her early 20's and one who just turned 30. I tweak their guitars for them. Both are excellent musicians. Not just technically but emotionally.

It's not pivotal at all, but any sort of musical "bent" would be nice so there is a commonality there, whether it be violin, guitar, bass, piano, flugelhorn, or even a hurdy gurdy. I really don't care, but from my experiences, the non-musical type either don't understand the love for it, or are completely apathetic to it. I don't play professionally at all, but I do earn my living by helping "real" musicians find their voice. And I love it.
Maybe u shld change your profile from binary code....
The Binary is there for a reason. People who don't want to put forth an effort, won't. It weeds out the lazy.
Surprisingly, I've gotten more messages with a Binary profile that with regular test. I would have written more, but I ran out of room.

| Women musicians? Play guitar? Posted: 7/7/2012 3:41:49 AM | I can understand, music speaks great volumes to those who are touched by it, and it only makes sense that you would want to share that with your partner. She doesn't have to be a professional, but I'm sure she also needs to be past the age of 12 :P You're looking for a girl who is dedicated to the instrument the way you are to yours. You want someone who has the passion for it, no just the interest. There's nothing wrong with seeking out what you want.
I actually just wrote a huge email to someone on here that I fancy very much so about how I feel when it comes to the music I play. Here's a quote:
"Now a days, it's amazing to jam with random people. Feeding off of someone else and making that connection, that primal touch that can't be expressed in words or actions; that real and total colaboration through sound... Music is the universal language that any form of life can understand. From plants to trees to insects to cats, dogs, mice, men... We all react and respond to it. It moves us all in directions we'd only find through it. It's the best possible drug in the world! It's free, anyone can do it, and you're amazing at it whenever you try. " "Music = freedom; and freedom is the key to a life worth living. "
I Play piano, guitar and cello. My guitar is a 2001 American Fender Telecaster. My prize cello is a 2004 natural finish Primavera, and I also have a beater Cecilio. The piano is more of a keyboard... (If my apartment would allow it, I would switch to an actual piano rather than the digital one I have now. Alas, I lack the room.)
