Just read this on yahoo, (hope this isn't a repost) my opinion is this relates to the majority of men of the previous generations, but today's men seem happily single, are aware of certain risks, and generally take better care of themselves than our predecessors. I strive to be very healthy and take care of myself(although I could cut back on drinking), and I know many that do the same. Do many still believe that women help us take better care of ourselves in general?

| Health risks in men over 40. Posted: 7/3/2012 11:39:04 AM | | Men ARE a lot more conscious with their heath these days. But I still agree with the idea that women are more going to encourage their boyfriends and husbands to get regular check ups and follow-ups. A lot of men still seem to be in the "if there's nothing wrong (that is noticeable) why go to the doctors". | |

Health risks in men over 40 #1 health risk in men, is men worrying about their health.
The business of health is just that, a business.

Men may take more care in their appearance, but I don't necessarily think they take more care about their health. They assume if they 'look' healthy, then they are. I'm one of those people who think that food quality is inherently less than what it used to be, and I don't know a lot of men who cook from scratch. Some do- but most of the guys who I've known who like cooking, still don't cook from scratch.

| Health risks in men over 40. Posted: 7/4/2012 4:54:40 AM | The article says that being in a good marriage that a man has more social connectedness because of marriage and this may lower stress levels and depression, which lead to chronic illness. (Women tend to have more social ties outside of marriage.)
I tend to agree, women have more friends than men, and a good social life reduces stress. Exception: It's better to be single than in a strained relationship.
Many divorced men state on of the pleasures of not being married is now they get to do whatever they want. If that mean drinking more, eating at poor times, eating out more and more junk food, then that is also negative.
The take away for me is having an active social life with many friends, which I have read many different places. Taking care of your health by exercise and eating right is well known to be important.

#1 health risk in men, is men worrying about their health. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Women too it seems.
We are bombarded with whats wrong with us, what pill or pad we need to buy constantly. I had no idea how many people "peed their pants" just sneezing according to commercials.
Eating right and taking care of our bodies is more important to us over 40 than the under 40s in my opinion. We look better/eat better/look younger than our parents did at this age IMO.
I have friends that would never eat a veggie if women didn't cook it for them and the opposite. Women that wouldn't eat well or watch certain things if the men they love didn't get on them from time to time.
Being single is good, finding a partner that can enrich your life in many ways is also good.
Taking care of your health by exercise and eating right is well known to be important. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Regular monogamous sex is VERY good for you physically and mentally..That glow can't be packaged.

| Health risks in men over 40. Posted: 7/4/2012 10:33:33 AM | I suppose it goes both ways; When you have a partner, they tend to keep you in 'check' so to speak, to offer the outside perspective we need...both genders included. However, true friends can offer the same most of the time.
As far as eating healthy and exercise, there are couples that do not cook, nor exercise, and are in very poor health. I believe a persons values, ambition, and self esteem are what fuels the desire to live a healthy lifestyle....single or married. I eat fresh meats, veggies, never fry anything, go to all sorts of doctors for preventive reasons, and no prodding is needed to do so. I have found that being divorced has been quite refreshing in the fact that I was unhappy, and sometimes depressed in my marriage, without realizing it! So the part about being in an unhealthy relationship I can vouch for!
And then there's this;
Regular monogamous sex is VERY good for you physically and mentally..That glow can't be packaged.
very true. | |

Actually, I think most men with an average intelligence know how to stay healthy
Are you seeing evidence of this on average?

Actually, I think most men with an average intelligence know how to stay healthy Well considering that basing a group on its average intelligence say nothing about their intelligence because if most of them have no idea, they would be considered the average.
So based on obesity rates alone it is clear that the US population is either far from informed with regards to healthy lifestyles or that companies have been able to create products that are nothing more than street drugs in a easy to eat package.
The number one killer in the US is a very powerful drug that has been tweak in the labs to produce some premo smack that is some 60X's more powerful (with respect to the high you get from it) than its nature counterpart, and it is all legal.
Synthetic Sugar: HFCS, which combined with flavor agents have turned food into nothing more than a juiced up reasonable facsimile of the real thing, full of flavor and serious lacking in nutrition, ergo All show and no go.

But I still agree with the idea that women are more going to encourage their boyfriends and husbands to get regular check ups and follow-ups
I suspect that this is the reason behind so many single men I and my friends encounter having such neglected teeth.....missing teeth, severely crooked teeth, bad-smelling teeth, horrendous breath that smells from several feet away.
And these aren't poor men either; most of them work and have enough money - and insurance - to at least get the smelly things looked at.
