Opening messages either revolve around commenting on their likes or are a variation of this (if there is nothing for inspiration on their profile):-
"Howdy,
Um, I'm very new on these things and never sure what to write in opening message so here goes.
Firstly sorry for the taking the inexcusable liberty of contacting you in the first place. I'm very sure you've better things to do than talk to a complete stranger, like.... insert relevant excuse}. Don't worry I have a thick skin :)
And secondly..... Ok there isn't really a secondly but it makes me sound more authoritative (try saying that with a mouthful of biscuits), don't you think :)
Anyway feel free to peruse my humble profile and I guess i might here from you. I know very little about opera so I would very much be up for a tutorial (not singing it, I wouldn't wish that torture on anyone, not even Jeremy Kyle).

Fair comment on the photo. I'll get rid of that.
I quite like the opening line, I think if a girl finds that offensive she isn't going to get on with me. Sort of a filter kind of thing.
No reason for the quote marks around culture and sophisticated, guess I was trying to make it seem less formal.
